Ever wanted to know how to extract a moving element from your footage to create some amazing VFX?
In this tutorial I will show you how to use Mocha AE in Adobe After Effects to perform some basic rotoscoping and make a bowl of carrots fly through the air!

Mocha AE comes included in Adobe After Effects and is a great tool to make your rotoscoping work easier and quicker.
By tracking your shape to the movement of the object you eliminate the need for additional keyframes.
This way, Mocha is essentially your 'rotoscoping assistant' and you only need to create keyframes to keep the tracked shape square over the object you want to rotoscope out.
If you don't have the 'Paste mocha mask' option available, check out the Imagineer Systems download page to see if you require any additional plugins:

In this quick video I want to talk about Rotoscoping - what it is, why it is so important and why you want to do everything you can to avoid ever having to do it.
If you have After Effects CS5, I recommend using the Roto Brush tool for your rotoscoping work.

Adobe After Effects
Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application developed by Adobe Systems and used in the post-production process of filmmaking and television production. Among other things, After Effects can be used for keying, tracking, rotoscoping, compositing and animation. It also functions as a very basic non-linear editor, audio editor and media transcoder.
Description
Adobe After Effects is software primarily used for creating motion graphics and visual effects. It allows users to animate, edit, and compose media in 2D or 3D space with many different built-in tools and third party plug-ins which can be downloaded from the Internet depending on what type of plug in the user is looking for. It also provides individual attention to variables like parallax and also user adjustable angles of observation.
Adobe After Effects is a layer-oriented program. Each individual media object like video clips, still images, audio clips, etc. runs on its own. In contrast, other Non-Linear Editing Systems use a system where individual media objects can occupy the same track as long as they do not overlap at the same time. This track-oriented system is more suitable for editing and can keep project files more simple. The layer oriented system that Adobe After Effects has is suitable for extensive video effects work and also key framing. Other compositing packages, especially the ones that employ tree or node workflows, such as Nuke and Fusion, are better suited to managing complex interconnected data flow within a composite. Adobe After Effects is capable of countering the problem somewhat by selectively hiding layers or by grouping them into pre-compositions.

Rotoscoping
Rotoscoping is an animation technique in which animators trace over footage, frame by frame, for use in live-action and animated films. Originally, recorded live-action film images were projected onto a frosted glass panel and re-drawn by an animator. This projection equipment is called a rotoscope. Although this device was eventually replaced by computers, the process is still referred to as rotoscoping.
In the visual effects industry, the term rotoscoping refers to the technique of manually creating a matte for an element on a live-action plate so it may be composited over another background.
History
The technique was invented by Max Fleischer, who used it in his technologically groundbreaking Out of the Inkwell animated series, which debuted in 1918. The live-film reference for the series' main animated character, Koko the Clown, was provided by his brother (Dave Fleischer), who performed choreographed movements while dressed in a clown costume. Max Fleischer patented the rotoscope method in 1917.

After Effects Basic Rotoscoping Tutorial with Mocha AE
Ever wanted to know how to extract a moving element from your footage to create some amazing VFX? In this tutorial I will show you how to use Mocha AE in Adobe After Effects to perform some basic rotoscoping and make a bowl of carrots fly through the air! If you want to follow along with this tutorial, get the footage here: http://bit.ly/2e1lr0t Mocha AE comes included in Adobe After Effects and is a great tool to make your rotoscoping work easier and quicker. By tracking your shape to the movement of the object you eliminate the need for additional keyframes. This way, Mocha is essentially your 'rotoscoping assistant' and you only need to create keyframes to keep the tracked shape square over the object you want to rotoscope out. If you have After Effects CS5, I recommend using the Roto Brush tool for your rotoscoping work. In this tutorial I will show you how to use Mocha AE in Adobe After Effects to perform some basic rotoscoping and make a bowl of carrots fly through the air!
