More coprophage than carnivore, the extraordinary form of Nepenthes lowii has evolved as a result of its close relationship with the mountain treeshrew (Tupaia montana), which defecates in the pitchers as it eats from the pitcher lids, truly a match made in Borneo!

A bird-pollinated carnivorous plant? Absolutely! Utricularia menziesii is Australia's own bird-pollinated carnivore, with large, pinkish-red flowers attractive to the Western Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus superciliosus)

It is spring in Victoria, and the orchids of the seasonally arid regions of western Victoria are going off now—this is the bloom of the bow-lipped spider orchid, Caladenia toxochila, mainly known from the Little Desert region near Nhill

A labelled pen & ink technical illustration of Drosera indica—a carnivorous sundew—prepared for a botanical publication. Inset is a vascularised glandular hair (adapted from Mauseth, 1988) and a unicellular eglandular hair from a scanning electron micrograph (Wise, 2014)

Fabaceae runs riot in Western Australia, with hundreds of species in many genera. A favourite is Isotropis cuneifolia—Granny bonnets or Lamb poison—the latter name being apt as they contain a potent nephrotoxin, iforrestine; few people have grannies this funky

Corybas incurvus is a relatively small, winter (June to September)-flowering helmet orchid native to VIC, TAS, SA and NSW, Australia. This terrestrial species is widespread and can be locally abundant, but habitat loss has erased numerous former populations

Ophrys corsica (1), O. sicula (2) & O. lutea (3), all snapped in Puglia, Italy, are bee orchids separated by differences that some observers would consider inconsequential (labellar flexion, aperture size &c). The real Q is whether these account for different pollinators

The cryptic leaves of the Malesian orchid Nephelaphyllum pulchrum can make it a challenge to spot when not in flower, but the blooms of this form are a shock of pink amongst the deep leaf litter of Mount Kinabalu, in Sabah, north Borneo

Drosera schizandra may not look like a carnivorous plant as its adult leaves often lack dew. It is believed that this Queensland rainforest-endemic sundew is evolving away from carnivory owing to the inefficacy of flypaper traps in habitats with high atmospheric humidity

The open pitchers of Nepenthes inermis produce a mucopolysaccharide that pours to the ground like diluted honey when they're upended. This substance allows the pitchers to both function as pseudo-flypaper traps & to retain prey during heavy rains. Barisan range, S Sumatra
