Anarchism, Marxism, and Economics Submitted by Guest contributor on Fri, 11/12/2015 - 4:49pm
Anarchism, Marxism, and Economics Although not a Marxist, I consider Marx’s writings as classics of revolutionary thought. Hence, coming to terms with Marx’s ideas – whether one agrees with them or not -- is important for anarchists, and left libertarians generally. Familiarising ourselves with Marx’s ideas through on-going study of the primary sources is, or should be, an essential part of our continuing self-education. In my view, this is just as important as studying, e.g., Bakunin, Kropotkin, Malatesta, Bookchin, etc.

Red and Black Forum: Anarchism, Marxism and economics
Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Red and Black Forum: Anarchism, Marxism and economics – a discussion of Ronald Tabor's "The Tyranny of Theory: a Contribution to the Anarchist Critique of Marxism." Presented by Paul Rubner and Sid Parissi. Anarchists have sometimes accepted Marx's economic analysis, though not Marxist politics. In recent years, especially since the GFC, there has been renewed interest in economic matters, and by some anarchists, in 'Marxist economics'. This has polarised opinion among anarchists as to the validity of Marx's critique of political economy, and its relevance to anarchism. This Forum will be a discussion between Paul Rubner and Sid Parissi of these matters, with reference to Tabor's book. Reading Tabor’s book is recommended, however not absolutely necessary. You’ll still get a lot out of the discussion if you haven’t read the book. It is available at Jura for $45.
Provisional Anarchist Federation Australia formed Submitted by Jura Books on Wed, 01/07/2015 - 12:00am
At a meeting on 14th June 2015 at Jura Books, delegates from four anarchist groups agreed to form a provisional Anarchist Federation Australia. The four founding groups were Jura Books, the Melbourne Anarchist Club, the Melbourne Anarchist Communist Group and Perth Libertarians. At the meeting a number of individual observers were also present as well as an observer from Black Rose and Black Flag. The provisional Federation is based on this constitution. However the constitution is still being discussed, and changes may be made at the first Congress of the Federation - tentatively scheduled for December 2015 in Melbourne. As well as being geographically diverse, the groups making up the federation have a range of political differences, but we hope to work together cooperatively to spread anarchist ideas in Australia. Other anarchist groups are welcome to join us.

Occupy Sydney 3 year anniversary; all charges dropped Submitted by Rhubarb on Thu, 23/10/2014 - 5:24pm
Today marks the 3 year anniversary of the initial massive, violent dawn police eviction of Occupy Sydney on 23 October 2011. Up to Monday, 11 people still faced criminal charges ranging from ‘camping’ to assault police primarily from this eviction. The hearing of these matters was continuously adjourned due to an Occupy Sydney constitutional challenge to the ‘camping’ charges i.e. that the implied right to the freedom of political communication in the Australian Constitution should have protected the political occupation that occurred at Martin Place as part of the global Occupy movement. Sadly this case reached the end of its road last Friday when it was considered by the High Court of Australia in regards to whether special leave should be granted for the case to be heard in the High Court. Leave was refused.
F*CK MAY 68. FIGHT NOW! Red and Black Forum on Contemporary Athenian Anarchists
Sunday, August 24, 2014 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
This talk will look at the contemporary Athenian anarchist and anti-authoritarian milieu and their on-the-ground struggles against capitalism, the state and the rise of fascism. Presented by Nick – a Jura Collective member who recently completed a phd at Macquarie University, based on his research in Athens. Nick will consider how militant protest actions act as expressions of collective grievance, desire for retaliation against police injustices and as manifestations of anarchist and anti-authoritarian praxis. He will also explore how varying shades of anarchic tendencies and ensuing ideological and practical disagreements are, for the most part, overcome in these often violent Athenian street-protests. The talk will be followed by discussion. 2pm, Sunday 24 August at Jura.

Saturday, March 22, 2014 - 10:30am to 5:00pm
In association with Jura Books, Black Rose, and other anarchists, the Sydney Anarchist Bookfair collective is organising Sydney's first ever Anarchist Bookfair. We aim to have over 50 stalls on the day including publishers, zine producers, radical t shirt designers, anarchist groups, and various campaign groups distributing free information on everything from community gardens to indigenous rights. Several keynote speakers will discuss various topics of interest in our speaker’s corner, held in the garden outside the main hall, and several workshops will be held throughout the day on anarchist politics. There will also be food stalls cook up some tasty treats and a childcare corner to help make it possible for families to come along. Anarchist Bookfairs began in London over 30 years ago and have since spread across the globe, including Australia’s shores with our comrades in Melbourne now planning their fourth annual event. Anarchist Bookfairs are a chance to find out about and discuss libertarian ideas, attend workshops and hear speeches on anarchist history and politics, discover new, local campaigns on wide range of issues, and of course, buy books. The Sydney Anarchist Bookfair will take place on Saturday 22nd March, between 10.30am and 5pm, at the main hall of Addison Road Community Centre. We hope you can come along!
