Cooperation is the process of groups of organisms working or acting together for common or mutual benefit, as opposed to working in competition for selfish benefit. Many animal and plant species cooperate both with other members of their own species and with members of other species (symbiosis or mutualism).
Language allows humans to cooperate on a very large scale. Certain studies have suggested that fairness affects human cooperation; individuals are willing to punish at their own cost (altruistic punishment) if they believe that they are being treated unfairly. Sanfey, et al. conducted an experiment where 19 individuals were scanned using MRI while playing an Ultimatum Game in the role of the responder. They received offers from other human partners and from a computer partner. Responders refused unfair offers from human partners at a significantly higher rate than those from a computer partner. The experiment also suggested that altruistic punishment is associated with negative emotions that are generated in unfair situations by the anterior insula of the brain.
Sesame Street is a long-running American children's television series created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett. The program is known for its educational content, and images communicated through the use of Jim Henson's Muppets, animation, short films, humor, and cultural references. The series premiered on November 10, 1969, to positive reviews, some controversy, and high viewership; it has aired on the U.S.'s national public television provider (PBS) since its debut, with its first run moving to premium channel HBO on January 16, 2016.
The show has undergone significant changes throughout its history. The format of Sesame Street consists of a combination of commercial television production elements and techniques which have evolved to reflect the changes in American culture and the audience's viewing habits. With the creation of Sesame Street, producers and writers of a children's television show used, for the first time, educational goals and a curriculum to shape its content. It was also the first time a show's educational effects were studied.

Is kayaking simply an individual sport? What role do other people play in progression of an individual paddler? This film focuses on an important aspect of whitewater kayaking: cooperation. Experienced paddlers know that cooperation is a crucial part of the sport, but often an emphasis on individual progression seems to hide that fact. Moreover, films on whitewater don't usually focus on the importance of group dynamics. This film is an author’s attempt to offer a more realistic representation of what kayaking means to him. INTERVIEW @THE SCHOOL OF LIFE: Richard Sennett wonders how we can repair the social divides that separates us. Goodwill, Sennett says, isn't enough: we need special skills to get on and cooperate, and we're losing them. Dr. Michael Tomasello, of the Department of Developmental and Comparative Psychology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, discusses his article for the 2013 Annual Review of Psychology, titled "Origins of Human Cooperation and Morality." In this video, he shares footage of chimpanzees and of toddlers collaborating, showing that while cooperation exists among other primates, it is much more developed in our societies, even among very young humans. Children have a stronger sense of egalitarianism, and do a better job of suppressing their self-interest when they cooperate on a task. Not only that, they are capable of demonstrating norm-based group-mindedness, another form of collaboration. Read the review article online: http://www.annualreviews.org/doi/abs/10.1146/annu...

Altruism, the selfless concern for the well-being of others, is a core virtue in many societies and religions. But ever since Darwin wrote about cooperation and altruism, scientists have had a love/hate relationship with these behaviors. Warren Holmes, University of Oregon psychology professor, explores the paradox of cooperative behavior in "The Evolution of Cooperation and the Paradox of Altruism." It was the second talk in a UO lecture series celebrating the life and work of Charles Darwin given on Tuesday, Feb. 10 2009.

New York University sociologist and historian Richard Sennett addresses the phenomenon of why people tend to avoid engaging with others who are different, leading to a modern politics of the tribe rather than the city. In this thought-provoking talk, Sennett offers ideas on what might be done to encourage people to live with others who are racially, ethnically, religiously or economically unlike themselves. The Curious Kids discover different ways people volunteer their time in Southwest Florida and share some of the ways they give back to the community. From lending a hand on International Beach Cleanup Day to bringing an hour of music and song to patients at Lee Memorial Children's Hospital, to encountering some Special Equestrians and learning how to safely wrangle a pelican, the Curious Kids meet some veteran volunteers helping people and animals in the community. Setting the tone about the value of working together, the kids dance to the upbeat song Cooperation, written and performed by Producer/Entertainer Rosie Emery. Produced by Rosie Emery
This is a momentous time for multinational acquisition projects. Populist backlash in multiple countries demonstrate increasing skepticism towards expanding alliance cooperation as an end in itself. At the same time, one of history’s largest international joint development efforts, the F-35, is ramping up production. CSIS plans for a discussion that brings a range of perspectives to the questions of what could, and should, come next. CSIS' Defense-Industrial Initiatives Group will also be releasing a report that focuses on several case studies of international joint development projects and the best practices gleaned from these cases.
An introduction to a broadly interdisciplinary study of cooperation and collective action.
