Headlining the grand final's pre-game entertainment is a clever PR move for the Las Vegas rockers, given they're dropping their fifth studio album - Wonderful Wonderful - on September 22. The Killers last performed in Australia at the 2013 Big Day Out festival.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said in a statement The Killers would appeal to footy fans "of all ages".

"I'm so pleased that The Killers have agreed to play on that one day in September," he said.

The band has also issued a statement, telling fans they're looking forward to injecting their "American rock and roll tunes" into Australia's national game.

Former Eurovision finalist Dami Im will sing the Australian anthem. Mike Brady will also perform Up There Cazaly as part of the pre-game entertainment.

The AFL grand final has a rocky history when it comes to big-name acts. In 2011, music legend Meat Loaf apologised to Australian fans for his disastrous grand final performance.

The NRL, meanwhile, has locked in US rapper rapper Macklemore for its grand final entertainment.
