Mark William Lanegan (born November 25, 1964) is an American alternative rock musician and singer-songwriter. Born and raised in Ellensburg, Washington, Lanegan began his musical career in 1984, forming the grunge band Screaming Trees with Gary Lee Conner, Van Conner and Mark Pickerel. During his time in the band, Lanegan also started a low-key solo career and released his first solo studio album, The Winding Sheet, in 1990. Since 1990, he has released a further six studio albums and has received critical recognition and moderate commercial success.
Lanegan has also collaborated with various artists and bands throughout his career, including with Kurt Cobain of Nirvana prior to the group's breakout success with their album, Nevermind, recording an unreleased album of songs by the blues singer, Lead Belly. Lanegan also performed with Layne Staley in the side band, Mad Season. It was intended that Lanegan was to take over vocals in Mad Season full-time after Staley declined to make a second album. Following the dissolution of The Screaming Trees in 2000, he became a member of Queens of the Stone Age and is featured on five of the band's albums—Rated R (2000), Songs for the Deaf (2002), Lullabies to Paralyze (2005), Era Vulgaris (2007) and ...Like Clockwork (2013). Lanegan also formed The Gutter Twins with Greg Dulli in 2003, released three collaboration albums with former Belle and Sebastian singer Isobel Campbell, and contributed to releases by Melissa Auf der Maur, Martina Topley-Bird, Creature with the Atom Brain, Moby, Bomb the Bass, Soulsavers and Mad Season.

Sixth track from their 2017 LP "Gargoyle" on Heavenly Recordings (release date April 28, 2017) Lyrics (credits to Fernando Halal - in comments) I awoke in fright No love, no one to save me Night after night So lonely, lonely baby Why can't I get right? All these demons to enslave me Who is left to fight? Just the emperor Just the emperor Just the emperor On the water still My boat violently shaking I need another pill Another bitter pill to wake me Upon the window sill The cat silently quaking Who is left to kill? Just the emperor Just the emperor Just the emperor The battlefield is crossed The flag and castle falling Is the army lost? Command no longer calling Into an early frost A few survivors crawling Who could know the cost? Just the emperor Just the emperor Just the emperor

I am the wolf Without a pack Banished so long ago I've survived On another’s kill And on my shadow home All I've learned is that poison will sting No one remembers the names of martyrs or kings No one remembers much of anything That came this way before I am the wolf Combing the beach Too hungry to shy away The carcass of a leviathan Sways gently on the waves I hope this shelter is enough to keep me warm Upstairs the heaven's giving birth to winter's storm But I've been dying since the day I was born That much I know is true I am the wolf High, wild and free A picture on a shelf I burn this house Down to the ashes A law unto myself All I've learned is that poison will sting No one remembers the names of martyrs or kings No one remembers much of anything That came this way before That ...

Interview with Mark Lanegan, Mike Johnson and J Mascis House A Home (acoustic)
Mark Lanegan is the soft-spoken elder statesman of the '90s Seattle grunge scene. Marc Maron talks with the former frontman of Screaming Trees and finds out how Mark went on to collaborate with a wide variety of artists, from Guns N' Roses to Belle and Sebastian. But first, singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco brings his laid-back Canadian rock vibe to the garage as he releases his third studio album and helps answer a puzzling question: Why does Marc like his music so much? One of rock’s true pioneers, Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age) joined us for a masterclass at BIMM Manchester. Mark helped to invent, popularise and evolve the Grunge sound of the early 90’s and was massively influential. We were lucky to have the chance to talk to him about his hugely successful career and his love for music. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan interview
The guys with whom Mark Lanegan founded rock band Screaming Trees in 1985, were the only ones in the town of Ellensburg, Washington - near 'the home of grunge' Seattle - that listened to the same music as he did. Although the singer admits that his work with Screaming Trees made him the person he is now, Lanegan has mixed feelings about the music. "We made a lot of records that I would never listen to today." Subscribe to 4AD here: http://bit.ly/4ADYouTube Following the release of Blues Funeral back in February, Mark Lanegan Band have recorded four songs for the thirteenth installment in the 4AD Sessions series. Pull Studios in Manhattan's Hudson Square played understated host to a session that leans heavily on Mark's indelible voice and undeniable presence, as well as the intensity and precision of his band. Filmed during a break in rehearsals for a New York City show that was to herald the release of the album, the session captures a band fully sharpened and itching to hit the road (US dates begin May 10 and are listed below). Tearing through four stand-out tracks from Blues Funeral, the performance ripples with a quiet fury that will be familiar to all those who've followed Mark over a c...

Of this song done by dave van ronk is the one
That inspired lanegan to record it.
A shanty man's life
Is a wearisome one
Though some say it's free from care
It's the swinging of an axe
From morning 'till night
In the forest wild and drear
Transported as we are
From a lady so fair
To the banks of some lonely stream
Where the wolf, bear, and owl
Give a terrifying howl
And disturb our nightly dreams
Oh sleeping at night
In our bunks without cheer
While the cold winter winds do blow
But as soon as the morning
Star does appear
To the wild woods we must go
Had we ale, wine, or beer
Our spirits far to cheer
When we're in those woods so wild
Where a glass of whiskey shone
When we're in the woods alone
For to pass away our long exile
A shanty man's life
Is a wearisome one
Tho some say it's free from care
It's the swinging of an axe
From morning 'till night
