The Format were an American indie rock band formed by Nate Ruess and Sam Means. The band announced a hiatus on February 4, 2008. Their style can be considered a mixture of indie, alternative, punk and folk music, with elements of 1960s and 1970s pop music. Though Means and Ruess are the foremost members of the band, they have played, toured, and recorded with Mike Schey, Mark Buzard, Don Raymond, and—for the DVD recording and summer 2007 tour—The Honorary Title's current drummer and The Format alumnus Adam Boyd. The Format chose their name to make fun of the music industry's inclination towards a cookie-cutter "format" for a hit.

History

Before forming The Format in February 2002, Means and Ruess, who had been friends since grade school, had been part of the band Nevergonnascore and released the EP "The Byron Sessions" as well as the band This Past Year, which had generated some record label interest but not a deal.

The duo's first single, aptly titled "The First Single" from their five song demo, EP, became locally popular on Phoenix radio station KEDJ and led to the duo signing with Elektra Records in 2002. Their first studio album, Interventions + Lullabies, recorded and produced by R. Walt Vincent and released in October 2003, was very successful around the Phoenix area. The band's fan base grew due to word of mouth, the Internet, and extensive touring. The album sold over 100,000 copies in the US.

Dog Problems

Dog Problems is the second and final album by American rock band The Format. It was released on July 11, 2006, on The Vanity Label, The Format's own record label, through their management company, Nettwerk. An MP3 version of Dog Problems leaked to the internet almost two months before its official release date. In response, the entire album was immediately made available digitally for only $7.99, through the band's online music store. By July 2006, the album had sold over 17,000 copies. The album was released in Japan on October 26, 2006, via Imperial Records. To celebrate the year anniversary of the release, the entire album was made available free from June 25 to July 15, 2007.

The Vanity Label

The Vanity Label is an imprint of Nettwerk, The Format's management company, which is owned and operated by Sam Means and Nate Ruess. Releasing Dog Problems through their own label allowed the band complete creative control, while still offering them national distribution through Sony BMG. The Format has also released a 7" single for the song "Time Bomb" and an iTunes exclusive And Now I Hope You're All Right – Live in California – EP on The Vanity Label. The album is yet to be released in the UK.

Music video

A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. There are also cases where songs are used in tie in marketing campaigns that allow them to become more than just a song. Tie ins and merchandising could be used in toys are marketing campaigns for food and other products. Although the origins of music videos date back to musical short films that first appeared in the 1920s, they came into prominence in the 1980s when MTV based their format around the medium. Prior to the 1980s, these works were described by various terms including "illustrated song", "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional clip", "promotional video", "song video", "song clip" or "film clip". Since the creation and increased popularity of YouTube, mainstream artists now promote new music videos by releasing trailers of short promos on the site for their upcoming song and music video. Consequentially, YouTube has been converted into a social media platform for celebrities and artists to market themselves to their fans and audiences.

Big Bang (2006 album)

"Bigbang" or "We Belong Together", also referred to as "First Single" is the first single by the South Korean hip-hop boy band Big Bang. It comes as a CD-and-DVD combo including extra documentary material. It was released by the YG Entertainment label and remained in the charts for eight months. The band's members – G-Dragon, Taeyang, Seungri, Daesung, and T.O.P – composed it. Band leader G-Dragon composed the principal track "We Belong Together"; he and T.O.P. wrote the lyrics. It presents a rhythmic up-tempo tune with rap passages. The song This Love is a remake of the song of the same name by Maroon 5.
