A human skull has been found buried in the cellar of a home that once belonged to a woman who went missing nearly 30 years ago. The current tenant found the skull in the Spanish Fork, Utah cellar on Monday, in the former home of Peggy Sue Case, who was 27 when she last seen in 1988 with her live-in boyfriend Michael I. Kurfin. The current tenant and a friend he was with immediately called police after finding the skull, which was buried about 18 inches under the dirt floor and wrapped in a blanket and plastic mesh, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. Forensic teams are now excavating the rest of the cellar, and police say an identification of the skull could take some time. Scroll down for video  The resident who found the skull was said to be moving out of the home at the time of the discovery, and dug in the cellar's dirt floor after noticing an area that was subsiding, and recalling rumors of a disappearance.  The mystery of Peggy Sue's disappearance has baffled police in the town roughly 50 miles south of Salt Lake City ever since the young woman's colleagues reported her missing on July 15, 1988. Peggy Sue worked at the Ensign-Bickford explosives plant in nearby Mapleton, and lived with her boyfriend Kurfin, according to contemporary news reports. The woman was last seen leaving a hot tub party with Kurfin on July 9, 1988, and the two were arguing at the time, according to police. Kurfin contacted Peggy Sue's employer to say she was ill, and then told her coworkers that she'd gone out of town to buy a car, police said. Cops found Kurfin's story increasingly suspicious, and searched the home, including the cellar, but found nothing. 'The detective at that time spent may many hours searching the residence, as well as the space beneath the residence and checked the cellar and removed some dirt from the cellar,' Spanish Fork Police Lt. Matt Johnson told Fox 13.  Police say it's possible the remains were buried in the cellar after the 1988 search. Without a body, Kurfin was never charged in Peggy Sue's disappearance, but he was convicted or an unrelated theft charge and served five years in prison. Former Spanish Fork police Detective Carl Johnston told the Tribune that he used to call Kurfin every year about the case, but that Kurfin would just hang up on him every time.
