Laos ((i/ˈlaʊs/, /ˈlɑː.ɒs/, /ˈlɑː.oʊs/, or /ˈleɪ.ɒs/)Lao: ສາທາລະນະລັດ ປະຊາທິປະໄຕ ປະຊາຊົນລາວ, pronounced [sǎːtʰáːlanalat pásáːtʰipátàj pásáːsón láːw] Sathalanalat Paxathipatai Paxaxon Lao), officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR) (French: République démocratique populaire lao), is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar (Burma) and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. Since 1975, it has been ruled by a Marxist and communist government. Its population was estimated to be around 6.8 million in July 2014.
Laos traces its history to the kingdom of Lan Xang, which existed from the 14th to the 18th century when it split into three kingdoms. In 1893, it became a French protectorate, with the three kingdoms—Luang Phrabang, Vientiane and Champasak — uniting to form what is now known as Laos. It briefly gained independence in 1945 after Japanese occupation, but returned to French rule until it was granted autonomy in 1949. Laos became independent in 1953, with a constitutional monarchy under Sisavang Vong. Shortly after independence, a long civil war ended the monarchy, when the Communist Pathet Lao movement came to power in 1975.

Quality of Investment in Loas PDR Economic performance Growth was maintained above 7% for a ninth consecutive year in 2014, though fiscal tightening and weaker global demand for minerals moderated the pace by 0.5 percentage points to 7.4%. Two decades of significant economic growth helped to halve the national poverty rate from 46% in 1992 to 23% in 2013. Economic prospects Growth is expected to moderate further in 2015 as lackluster demand for minerals weighs on mining and as fiscal constraints curb public investment. Nevertheless, growth in the gross domestic product is forecast at 7.0% in 2015, picking up to 7.2% in 2016. Investment in power projects will generate much of the growth over the forecast period. More than 20 power projects are under construction, including the $3.5 billio...

In this video, a salesman with a stall in the Vientiane Morning Market and the head of the Lao Coffee Association talk about more transparent trade practices and how these benefit their businesses. The World Bank is supporting the development of good trade practices in Laos through the Trade Development Facility project. Laos recently hosted the Southeast Asian Games for the first time ever, a move that gained it prestige and perhaps just as importantly an economic boost. As VOA's Daniel Schearf reports from the capital Vientiane, the landlocked farming nation depends on exporting natural resources but it increasingly expects tourism to play a larger economic role.
To satisfy our craving for Lao food we headed over to the ever popular Tamarind restaurant for lunch where we sampled traditional Lao cuisine in a relaxed setting nearby the Nam Khan river in Luang Prabang, Laos. Having made Thailand our base for several months, we were curious to see how Lao cuisine would compare with its 'spicy' and 'sweet' Thai counterpart. After sampling Lao food at several different restaurants we realized a few key differences: GEAR WE USE Olympus OM-D E-M5 II: http://amzn.to/1OchS7t Canon G7X: http://amzn.to/1YdjsYX Olympus 14-150mm II Lens: http://amzn.to/1Y79zeM Rode Video Mic GO: http://amzn.to/1WDKtVM Joby Gorilla Pod: http://amzn.to/1PgoY5F SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro: http://amzn.to/25KEErs SOCIAL MEDIA & TRAVEL BLOGS AUDREY: blog: http://thatbackpacker.c...

http://bit.ly/ZO1pvQ - Education and health for women and girls in Laos, in recent decades, are improving. However, women are still dying of childbirth and girls continue to drop out of school at alarming rates, especially in rural areas. Women don't hold decision-making power in their households. Economic opportunities for women, although improving, remain constrained. It's clear that gender inequality hinders development. Watch this video clip to see how Laos is trying to overcome these challenges, by implementing gender policies and investing more in the well-being of Lao women and girls. Most of the households in Laos rely on firewood and charcoal as their main cooking fuel. This places a heavy burden on the country's natural resources. Moreover, cooking with solid fuels on traditional stoves has an adverse effect on the health of its users. Particularly women and children are most vulnerable to harmful household air pollution. SNV is exploring high-quality cooking solutions, ranging from traditional to advanced technologies. One of the cookstoves we are testing is The Biolite stove. It has been designed by a social enterprise from New York and has been tested in Laos for the first time. We promote cookstoves that meet quality standards for fuel efficiency, safety, reduced emissions, affordability, durability, and convenience for household cooking needs. Working directl...

Travel video about destination Laos. Laos is a tropical country in the heart of Indochina and was once known as ‘The realm of a million elephants’. Set amid mountains and surrounded by China, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar, Laos lay undiscovered for many years but today it is gradually opening its doors and its dreamlike royal cities, contemplative temple complexes, mysterious plains and ethnic mountain villages are now accessible to all. The capital, Vientiane, originated at the point at which the first navigable section of the Mekong River joins with the Gulf Of Thailand, once an important trading route to South China. We travel north into the pure Asia of bygone times, a land full of adventure where there is little tourism, past many villages with small markets at the roadside and vario...

These are my best tips for backpacking in Laos. You might be staying in a Laos hostel on a budget, or just wondering what to do in Laos after going tubing, either way, this advice should help you prepare your backpacking itinerary and travelling adventure! I cover local popular Laos attractions and destinations like Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, and the capital Vientiane, as well as getting around by slow boat, sleeper bus, what visas you’ll need and general Laos backpacking etiquette. My Laos hostel recommendation is Easy Go Hostel in Vang Vieng http://www.easygohostel.com, not exactly the most luxurious place but the friendliest atmosphere! Travel video about destination Vientiane in Laos. Since the 16th century, Vientiane has been the capital of Laos and is situated in the heart of Indochina. The city originated at the point at which the first navigable section of the Mekong River joins with the Gulf of Thailand.Vientiane was once a group of rural settlements and even today contains several village-like districts, each with its own temple and traditional marketplace. At the end of the 19th century, the French began to renovate the city’s most important buildings and made Vientiane the administrative capital of their new colony and gave it a French look. There are some fascinating places to visit outside the city, such as the Cultural Park of the Laotian People, a large area on the banks of the Mekong River. Historic Vientian...

License Video: http://dissolve.com/products?media_type=video&producer;=Pete+R&sort;_by_date=true Updated: Made the video a little more concise and the music a little bit more interesting and not repetitive. Take a deep breath and go on a journey around South East Asia through leech-infested jungles, abandoned temples, and colorful coral reefs. It was a 2 months trip that gone by so fast, like taking one deep breath. This is no ordinary "inspiring" travel video. For this, I decided to go with a much more fun and action-packed style instead of the usual go-to "inspirational" travel style that I like to do.. and a delicious "disco" music. Everything is better with disco music. :) I also experimented on many ways of shooting and framing and I think most of the footages came out really well. ...

WHY A TOUR IN ASIA? Attracted both by the beauty of Asia, we left our jobs to realise our dream: launch an online travel guide, while traveling six months through Asia. We already much traveled the world but we chose finally this continent because we always have lived strong and memorable experiences there. We defined our route following the dry seasons of each country. Eh yes! We studied tourism management and we are therefore very rigorous in the organization of a trip. This project gave a real goal to this trip: to discover even more, even further, limitless. After a few months, we found ourselves completely free of any prior, completely off the beaten tracks and we become true adventurers. And it is there, you really feel the joy, the pride of all the emotions experienced. It's crazy,...
First attempt at a trailer for the video of "the long way to Bangkok." I decided to make a few trailers just to give me a chance to practice before I go ahead and make the real thing - and to check all my software and hardware can cope with the HD video content. I'm off to the countryside tomorrow to do some Muay Thai for a couple of weeks so won't have another chance to practice for a little while - but will get to work on some more light hearted trailers! I hope this trailer conveys some of the epic scenes we encountered on our journey to Bangkok. The map is a bit blurred I know...need to find a higher res map so If anyone has one... All video content straight from the camera - always learning new things about video...I already wish I had taken more footage and used a higher contrast ...

Exploring the Golden Triangle near Laos & Myanmar. Language barrier, embrace it. Travel guide book, dump it. Fear of street food, chuck it. Liberate yourself from all that. Wake up expecting anything. Mai pen rai (no worries). Because "hey, you're in Thailand." Bike an uncharted oxcart path among lush rice paddies and garlic fields. Be startled by an ornate Buddhist temple quietly sitting in the middle of a jungle-filled valley. Relish a truly homemade curry and stare at the jagged limestone hills that have not changed for thousands of years. Say to yourself, "Is it Tuesday?" Even that doesn't matter because you're in Thailand. So mai pen rai.

Since 1975, it has been ruled by a Marxist and communist government. In 1893, it became a French protectorate, with the three kingdoms—Luang Phrabang, Vientiane and Ch...

Never has the choice been so drastic for the Akha People of northern Laos. For centuries they preserved their culture in remote mountain villages. Now the pressures of modern civilization are closing in. More and more abandon their traditional way of life and settle in the lowlands. Through glimpses into Akha life this film explores their struggle - between the hope of a better future and a fading cultural identity. A film by Martin Gronemeyer Narration: Rachel Clarke produced for GTZ/ GIZ 2004
