State parks or provincial parks are parks or other protected areas managed at the sub-national level within those nations which use "state" or "province" as a political subdivision. State parks are typically established by a state to preserve a location on account of its natural beauty, historic interest, or recreational potential. There are state parks under the administration of the government of each U.S. state, and of some states of Mexico. The term is also used in Australia, though the distinction between state and national parks there is different. The Canadian equivalent term is provincial park. Similar systems of local government maintained parks exist in other countries, but the terminology varies.
State parks are thus similar to national parks, but under state rather than federal administration. Similarly, local government entities below state level may maintain parks, e.g., regional parks or county parks. In general, state parks are smaller than national parks, with a few exceptions such as the Adirondack Park in New York and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California.
Topanga State Park is a California state park located in the Santa Monica Mountains, within Los Angeles County, California. It is part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
The park is located adjacent to the community of Topanga, within the City of Los Angeles. Covering 11,000 acres (45 km²), with thirty-six miles of trails and unimproved roads, the park’s boundaries stretch from Topanga Canyon to Pacific Palisades and Mullholland Drive. There are more than 60 trail entrances. Topanga State Park is not only the largest park in the Santa Monica Mountains, but it's also considered to be the largest park located in the limits of a city.
The word Topanga is an old Shoshonean language word meaning 'above' and referring to the canyon settlement being above the flood waters of Topanga Creek. The Tongva and Chumash peoples inhabited the area for thousands of years. The land of Topanga Canyon was originally inhabited by Native American groups collectively referred to as the Topanga Culture, including the Chumash and Tongva.
William Penn Adair "Will" Rogers (November 4, 1879 – August 15, 1935) was an American cowboy, vaudeville performer, humorist, newspaper columnist, social commentator, and stage and motion picture actor.
Known as "Oklahoma's Favorite Son", Rogers was born to a prominent Cherokee Nation family in Indian Territory (now part of Oklahoma). He traveled around the world three times, made 71 movies (50 silent films and 21 "talkies"), and wrote more than 4,000 nationally syndicated newspaper columns. By the mid-1930s, the American people adored Rogers. He was the leading political wit of his time, and was the highest paid Hollywood movie star. Rogers died in 1935 with aviator Wiley Post, when their small airplane crashed in northern Alaska.
Rogers's vaudeville rope act led to success in the Ziegfeld Follies, which in turn led to the first of his many movie contracts. His 1920s syndicated newspaper column and his radio appearances increased his visibility and popularity. Rogers crusaded for aviation expansion, and provided Americans with first-hand accounts of his world travels. His earthy anecdotes and folksy style allowed him to poke fun at gangsters, prohibition, politicians, government programs, and a host of other controversial topics in a way that was appreciated by a national audience, with no one offended. His aphorisms, couched in humorous terms, were widely quoted: "I am not a member of an organized political party. I am a Democrat." Another widely quoted Will Rogers comment was "I don't make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts."

It has an array of landscapes varying from chaparral to broad leaf and grasslands. One of its most striking features is Eagle Rock, located on the northern side of the park, near Trippet Ranch. I highly recommend doing this hike in the spring when the wildflowers are out; they can illuminate your experience. Our gear! Topanga State Park is a beautiful park located within Los Angeles near Malibu. It's loaded with hiking trails and scenic vistas of the Santa Monica mountains, the L.A. area, and the Pacific. I had the opportunity to spend a few hours here while in the area and decided to do the hike up the Musch Trail to Eagle Rock. This hike is one in a million, and I'd recommend it for anyone who's in the L.A. area. It's not terribly difficult, but not extremely short, either. You can make it a short hike or make an entire day out of it. I ended up hiking about 9 miles for the loop, but I also did a lot of exploring and a small bit of backtracking. The area has so many places to explore, I was like a kid in a candy shop. The Musch Trail is an actual trail that is single track and steep in areas. Though...

This is a video of a mountain lion in Topanga State Park in the Santa Monica Mountains. Although biologists with the National Park Service have been capturing and radiocollaring mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains since 2002, this mountain lion has not been captured (since he isn't wearing a radiocollar). This video shows that there's more mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains than captured by the National Park Service.
We encountered this gentleman at the end of our hike in Topanga State Park today. Don't sit on the fences! This is a Pacific Coast Rattlesnake with very toxic venom. We learned quite a bit of up-to-date info on poisonous snakes from this man today. It was a lucky encounter.
Viewer beware: may cause dizziness Hiked the Temescal Canyon trail in Topanga State Park in 53 minutes, car to car. This is one of the best vantage points I've been to in the Pacific Palisades overlooking the west coast, beach cities, a silhouette of Catalina Island, Santa Monica, and Los Angeles. It was a short and sweet hike and definitely worth the views. The video does not do the actual view justice! Video was shot with a GoPro Hero and condensed down to less than 7 minutes. 0:16 - trail starts 1:30 - beginning of incline 1:54 - small bridge 2:50 - random piping structure you could do some workouts on 2:57 - fork in the road 3:03 - first major vantage point (video slows) 3:45 - major vantage point (videos slows) 4:18 - shameless selfies 4:22 - beginning of descent 4:56 - fork in the...

One of six short documentaries on the history, sub-communities, and characters of Topanga Canyon by Anastasia Fite. The Topanga Rodeo grounds, The Snakepit, and Topanga Beach, were alternative communities at the mouth of Topanga Canyon that provided an alternative lifestyle for surfers, artists, and bohemians of all kinds until 2007, due to an archaic rental agreement with LAAC. When State Parks bought the land in the 2000's they evicted all the tenants and tore down their homes, many of whom had been there for 40+ years and raised several generations of families there. This film profiles some of those residents and their time at The Rodeo Grounds as they wander through their abandoned and derelict houses nostalgically telling stories.
