Elmer Bernstein (April 4, 1922 – August 18, 2004) was an American composer and conductor best known for his many film scores. In a career which spanned fifty years, he composed music for hundreds of film and television productions. His most popular works include the scores to The Magnificent Seven, The Ten Commandments, The Great Escape, To Kill a Mockingbird, Ghostbusters, The Black Cauldron, Airplane!, The Rookies, and Cape Fear.
Bernstein won an Oscar for his score to Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) and was nominated for fourteen Oscars in total. He also won two Golden Globes and was nominated for two Grammy Awards.
Bernstein was born in New York City, the son of Selma (née Feinstein, 1901-1991), from Ukraine, and Edward Bernstein (1896-1968), from Austria-Hungary. He was not related to the celebrated composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein; but the two men were friends, and even shared a certain physical similarity. Within the world of professional music, they were distinguished from each other by the use of the nicknames Bernstein West (Elmer) and Bernstein East (Leonard). They pronounced their last names differently; Elmer pronounced his (BERN-steen), and Leonard's was (BERN-stine).

Elmer Bernstein's well known and highly popular theme music was conducted and adapted by Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Barnwell (Senior Director of Music Household Division and Director of Music Band of the Welsh Guards). It is interesting to note how far the so called modern "High Pitched" Flutes have to pull out in order to be able to be accompanied by the bands. These are 3-piece flutes. The very late...
In the history of film music, Elmer Bernstein is among the iconic and the legendary. To mark what would have been his 95th birthday, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra present the European premiere of a very special concert celebrating Elmer's life through stories and music, narrated and conducted by his son, Peter Bernstein. Elmer Bernstein's career spanned an unparalleled five decades, during which he composed more than 150 original movie scores, nearly 80 for television, and numerous other side-projects and diversions. He created some of the most recognisable and memorable themes in Hollywood history, including The Man With the Golden Arm, The Magnificent Seven, and The Great Escape, and picked up numerous awards including an Academy Award for Thoroughly Modern Millie in 1968)....

You've heard of The Seven Samurai. You've heard of The Magnificent Seven. But have you heard of Three Amigos? No? The last of the string of raucous comedies directed by John Landis, the man who gave the world Animal House and The Blues Brothers, Three Amigos takes the plot of The Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven and turns it into a vehicle for Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short. To provide the music, Landis chose two Hollywood legends: Elmer Bernstein -- who, among other things, had scored The Magnificent Seven and thereby gave the world a western theme it'll never forget -- and Randy Newman -- who, although he was only the nephew of film score giants Alfred, Thomas, and David Newman, had already had a string of superb pop albums to his credit and thereby gave the world suc...

The Oscar-nominated score to the 2002 movie 'Far from Heaven' was the last soundtrack completed by the American composer Elmer Bernstein (1922-2004), and ended a distinguished 50 year career as a movie composer - he is perhaps best known for his score for 'The Magnificent Seven'. Elmer was not, incidentally, related to his near-contemporary Leonard. On the soundtrack the piece (which is the first track on the recording) begins with a piano solo. I have used the published arrangement - and one or two harmonies differ from the recording. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear http://www.psear.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------------...
