President Donald Trump has decided to scrap a program shielding from deportation immigrants who came to the United States illegally as children but will give Congress six months to craft legislation to replace it, sources familiar with the situation said.

President Donald Trump deciding to scrap a program protecting from deportation immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally as children. Sources telling Reuters on Sunday that Trump will give Congress six months to replace the program, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. The Obama-era program protects nearly 800,000 young men and women from deportation and allows them to work legally. Those individuals are often called "DREAMers." In Chicago on Sunday, dozens of activists rallied in favor of DACA. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CESAR VARGAS, DACA RECIPIENT, SAYING: "It's a little unsettling to know that you're my whole future can be changed in a press conference." Thirty-three-year-old Cesar Vargas came to the U.S. when he was five. He enrolled in DACA as soon as he could. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CESAR VARGAS, DACA RECIPIENT, SAYING: "Because of that I was able to graduate and graduate law school to be the first undocumented licensed attorney in the great state of New York." Trump's decision already facing backlash on Capitol Hill, including from his own party. Cuban-American Republican Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen tweeting her dismay, writing, quote, "After teasing #Dreamers for months with talk of his 'great heart,' @POTUS slams door on them. Some 'heart.'" Immigration hawk and Iowa Republican Representative Steve King meanwhile said Trump's six-month window for Congress to act will allow Republican leadership to push for amnesty for those immigrants. The decision is expected to be announced on Tuesday.
