They thought it was driftwood / Diorama / Creepy beetle
This is a real story that happened to two guys. They went on vacation to a lake and wanted a good rest from the bustle of the city.
There were snags sticking out of the lake, but they had no idea what they were pouring into the lake for many years. Various chemical waste has turned a small beetle into a huge monster that feeds on flesh.

Atomic Chrysalis by Maysam Al-Ani
This project by digital media artist Maysam Al-Ani, specially commissioned for Start a Reaction, utilized an interactive Instagram AR filter to explore topics of metamorphosis and emergence, inspired by the symbols surrounding the narrative of nonproliferation. By marshaling the ubiquitous and often superficial medium of the “selfie” to the nuclear cause, Al-Ani presented a facetious and knowing commentary on the current state of nuclear discourse in popular culture. The filter placed its user into an animation depicting a cycle of nuclear death and florid rebirth, presenting a nuclear crisis that is at once poignant and accessible, individualized and — in the end — inescapably social.

Lecture | War, Peace, and Moore’s “Atom Piece”
Seventy-five years ago, the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction took place on the campus of the University of Chicago. Fifty years ago, a bronze by Henry Moore was erected to mark the site, a work known by its owners as "Nuclear Energy." The artist himself called it "Atom Piece," suggesting an alternative reading of the atom’s unleashed force. Both interpretations are still visible today, present in the sculpture, the process by which it was made, and the explosive tensions it seems to keep in balance.
Anne Wagner (Class of 1936 Professor Emerita, University of California, Berkeley) delivers this lecture, which is supported by the Rhoda Pritzker Fund for Lectures on Modern British Art.

FAQ:
What does the title of the piece mean?
Radium Zoo is inspired by the story of Radium Girls, I highly recommend looking the story up! In the early 1900's women were using Radium paint to make the hands on watches glow and the workers became so radioactive that their skin had a permanent glow, even today in their coffins. Radium Zoo is my imagination of a world where every creature was contaminated with radium.
Why is the video distorted at the end?

video clip - plaque and sculpture - first nuclear chain reaction - sidneysealine
Chicago Pile-1 (CP-1) was the world's first artificial nuclear reactor.[4][5] The construction of CP-1 was part of the Manhattan Project, and was carried out by the Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago. It was built under the west viewing stands of the original Stagg Field. The first man-made self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction was initiated in CP-1 on 2 December 1942, under the supervision of Enrico Fermi. Fermi described the apparatus as "a crude pile of black bricks and wooden timbers." Made of a large amount of graphite and uranium, with "control rods" of cadmium, indium, and silver, unlike most subsequent reactors, it had no radiation shield and no cooling system.
The site is now a National Historic Landmark and a Chicago Landmark.

Atomic Chrysalis debuted August 2 and ran for the duration of the Start a Reaction event at Henry Moore Nuclear Energy Sculpture Plaza.

This is a a pop surrealism acrylic painting on polymer clay sculpture inspired by the series Chernobyl and the movie Annihilation and I've included some fun facts! I hope you enjoy! Below are the answers to some frequently asked questions:
Radioactive contamination! LOL, just joking... For some reason when I insert a full size image in my video editor it tends to mess it up after it's uploaded. I decided to keep the video up as it's a minor part of the video but in the future I will only use footage of the final piece instead of an image. If you'd like to see it in full size it is on my website shumakerart.com or on my social media accounts (links below)
What paints do you use?
SoHo Acrylic paints from Jerry's Artarama Acrylic Set of 24. My favorite for getting pops of vibrant color. I also used Golden shift paint green/orange on the highlights for that iridescent pop of color.
What brand of clay?
Super Sculpey Living Doll
What did you use to fix the sculpture to the wood?
2 part epoxy glue
Is this piece available?
It will be! In the 3rd Thursday of August. Stay tuned to my social media for the drop! :-)
