Detour is a 1945 film noir that stars Tom Neal and Ann Savage.
The film was adapted by Martin Goldsmith and Martin Mooney (uncredited) from Goldsmith's novel of the same name and was directed by Edgar G. Ulmer. The film was released by the Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC), one of the so-called "poverty row" film studios in mid-twentieth century Hollywood.
Although made on a small budget with bare sets and straightforward camera work, Detour has gathered much praise through the years and is held in high regard. In 1992, Detour was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
The film has fallen into the public domain and is freely available from online sources. There are many DVD editions.

"Detour" has been recorded by countless stars, from Pop (Patti Page, Duane Eddy, etc.), Country (Hank Thompson, Elton Britt, etc.), and Western (Spade Cooley, Devon Dawson, etc.) ... but until now it's doubtful you've ever heard the original release. JImmy Walker is even accompanied by the man who wrote the song, "Okie" Paul Westmoreland (and His Pecos River Boys). Coincidentally, the film of the same title (see image) also came out in 1945. Is there a connection there that we don't yet know about? Coast 2016 came out in Dec. 1945.

From imbd.com Detour was the first "B" movie chosen by the Library of Congress for its National Film Registry, in 1992. Also the first Hollywood "Noir" honored. According to Ann Savage, she and Tom Neal did not get along during filming. Savage stated that Neal embarrassed her on the set by putting his tongue in her ear. She retaliated by slapping his face as hard as she could. After that incident, they did not speak to each other except when filming scenes. While setting up to film a hitchhiking scene, a passing car tried to pick up Ann Savage(made up to look dirty and disheveled), causing laughter in the rest of the crew. The budget PRC gave director Edgar G. Ulmer for this film was so small that the 1941 Lincoln Continental V-12 convertible driven by Charles Haskell was actually Ulme...
'Detour, there's a muddy road ahead', detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find
Should have read that detour sign
Headed down life's crooked road, lots of things I never knowed
Because of me not knowin', I now pine
Trouble got in the trail, spent the next five years in jail
Should have read that detour sign
'Detour, there's a muddy road ahead', detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find
Should have read that detour sign
When I got right to the place where it said 'About face'
I thought that all my worries were behind
But the farther I go, more sorrow I know
Should have read that detour sign
'Detour, there's a muddy road ahead', detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find
Should have read that detour sign
When I got stuck in the mud all my hopes dropped with a thud
I guess that my heart strings are made of twine
Had no willpower to get from the hole that I'm in yet
Should have read that detour sign
'Detour, there's a muddy road ahead', detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find
Should have read that detour sign
Should have read that detour sign
