North American Free Trade Agreement
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA; Spanish: Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte, TLCAN; French: Accord de libre-échange nord-américain, ALÉNA) is an agreement signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral rules-based trade bloc in North America. The agreement came into force on January 1, 1994. It superseded the Canada–United States Free Trade Agreement between the U.S. and Canada.
NAFTA has two supplements: the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC) and the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC).
Negotiation and U.S. ratification
Following diplomatic negotiations dating back to 1990 among the three nations, U.S. President George H. W. Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Mexican President Carlos Salinas, each responsible for spearheading and promoting the agreement, ceremonially signed the agreement in their respective capitals on December 17, 1992. The signed agreement then needed to be ratified by each nation's legislative or parliamentary branch.

Nafta (oil company)
Nafta was an oil distribution chain owned by the Soviet Union but operated abroad.
In the 1920s, a Nafta chain operated in Sweden, before being sold to Gulf Oil in 1937. In the UK and Belgium a petrol chain was built up in the 1960s, with the British service stations being sold to Q8 in 1987.
It is rumoured that these were used as spy bases during the Cold War.

(18 May 2017) Donald Trump called NAFTA the "worst trade deal maybe ever signed anywhere.'' So he wants to renegotiate it -- or kill it altogether.
So just what is NAFTA?
The letters stand for North American Free Trade Agreement -- N-A-F-T-A. Starting in 1994, it bound the United States, Canada and Mexico into a single free-trade zone. That means avocados from Mexico, auto parts from the United States, oil from Canada and thousands of other products can cross borders tax free within the NAFTA zone.
NAFTA, which was signed by President Bill Clinton, was intended to encourage trade between the three countries.
Canada was already America's top trading partner. So the agreement's big goal was to link Mexico to its northern neighbors and modernize its economy. By creating good jobs in Mexico, the agreement was expected to reduce the number of Mexicans crossing illegally into the United States to find work.

When the North American Free Trade Agreement began in 1994, auto companies in the US, Canada and Mexico could trade parts and cars without paying tariffs. And they could source parts and labor from the cheapest places. That is a big reason why US car prices have only risen seven percent in 25 years.
But the US Mexico Canada Agreement -- or USMCA for short -- could change that; the new law would increase the regulations that car manufacturers need to meet in order to sell tariff-free cars.

North American Free Trade Agreement
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA; Spanish: Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte, TLCAN; French: Accord de libre-échange nord-américain, ALÉNA) is an agreement signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral rules-based trade bloc in North America. The agreement came into force on January 1, 1994. It superseded the Canada–United States Free Trade Agreement between the U.S. and Canada.
NAFTA has two supplements: the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC) and the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC).
Negotiation and U.S. ratification
Following diplomatic negotiations dating back to 1990 among the three nations, U.S. President George H. W. Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Mexican President Carlos Salinas, each responsible for spearheading and promoting the agreement, ceremonially signed the agreement in their respective capitals on December 17, 1992. The signed agreement then needed to be ratified by each nation's legislative or parliamentary branch.
