Dance
Dance is a performance art form consisting of purposefully selected sequences of human movement. This movement has aesthetic and symbolic value, and is acknowledged as dance by performers and observers within a particular culture. Dance can be categorized and described by its choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its historical period or place of origin.
An important distinction is to be drawn between the contexts of theatrical and participatory dance, although these two categories are not always completely separate; both may have special functions, whether social, ceremonial, competitive, erotic, martial, or sacred/liturgical. Others disciplines of human movement are sometimes said to have a dance-like quality, including martial arts, gymnastics, figure skating, synchronized swimming and many other forms of athletics.
Performance and participation
Theatrical dance, also called performance or concert dance, is intended primarily as a spectacle, usually a performance upon a stage by virtuoso dancers. It often tells a story, perhaps using mime, costume and scenery, or else it may simply interpret the musical accompaniment, which is often specially composed. Examples are western ballet and modern dance, Classical Indian dance and Chinese and Japanese song and dance dramas. Most classical forms are centred upon dance alone, but performance dance may also appear in opera and other forms of musical theatre.

Girl
A girl is a female human from birth through childhood and adolescence to attainment of adulthood when she becomes a woman. The term girl may also be used to mean a young woman, and is often used as a synonym for daughter.
Etymology
The English word girl first appeared during the Middle Ages between 1250 and 1300 CE and came from the Anglo-Saxon words gerle (also spelled girle or gurle). The Anglo-Saxon word gerela meaning dress or clothing item also seems to have been used as a metonym in some sense.
Girl has meant any young unmarried woman since about 1530. Its first noted meaning for sweetheart is 1648. The earliest known appearance of girl-friend is in 1892 and girl next door, meant as a teenaged female or young woman with a kind of wholesome appeal, dates only to 1961.
Usage for adults
The word girl is sometimes used to refer to an adult female, usually a younger one. This usage may be considered derogatory or disrespectful in professional or other formal contexts, just as the term boy can be considered disparaging when applied to an adult man. Hence, this usage is often deprecative. It can also be used deprecatively when used to discriminate against children ("you're just a girl").

Doris Duke
Doris Duke (November 22, 1912 – October 28, 1993) was an American heiress, socialite, horticulturalist, art collector, and philanthropist.
The daughter of a wealthy tobacco tycoon, Duke was able to fund a life of global travel and wide-ranging interests. These extended across journalism, competition surfing, jazz piano, wildlife conservation, Oriental art and Hare Krishna.
Much of her work centered on her father's estate at Hillsborough Township, New Jersey, where she created many elaborately-themed gardens, furnished with artifacts acquired on her world travels, including one of America's largest indoor botanical displays. She was also active in preserving more than 80 historic buildings in Newport, Rhode Island.
Twice married and divorced, Duke enjoyed a colorful private life that was seldom out of the gossip columns.
Her philanthropic work continued into her old age, some of it unknown to the public during her lifetime, and her estimated $1.3 billion fortune was largely left to charity. After much legal challenging of the executors and trustees, Duke's legacy is now administered by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, dedicated to medical research, prevention of cruelty to children and animals, the performing arts, wildlife and ecology.

Roger Ballen
Roger Ballen (born in New York City, New York, USA, 1950) is an American photographer living in Johannesburg, South Africa, and working in its surrounds since the 1970s. His body of work, developed over a period of four decades, began in the documentary field but his approach has widened to allow for a fictionalised visual dialogue between individuals, their architectural space, found objects and domesticated animals. His approach has been hailed as among the most unusual and exciting developments in contemporary photography.
Critics have written about Ballen’s shift from depictions of the everyday to the creation of tableaux vivants noting that the dramatic arrangement has defied conventions of documentary photography.
In his preface to the second edition of Outland, art historian and curator Peter Weiermair has noted that Ballen’s move from the objective and representational to collaboration with his subjects has meant that he has forsaken the critical role as chronicler of events in favour of allowing his figures to become "protagonists in an existential drama". In earlier works these were individuals experiencing the dissolution of one order in South Africa in place of another; in the process they retreated to hidden territories explored by Ballen.

There are an estimated 15 uncontacted tribes living in the Peruvian Amazon, all face catastrophe unless their land is protected
Survival has been calling on the Peruvian government to protect land inhabited by uncontacted tribes since the 1970s.
Today, five reserves have been created for uncontacted tribes, and Peru has ratified laws that uphold the tribes’ right to be left alone.
But now the threats are greater than ever. Illegal loggers and miners are invading the forest, and oil and gas concessions cut across more than 70% of Peru’s Amazon region.
We’re campaigning to ensure the government upholds uncontacted tribes’ right to their land and prevents outsiders from invading it.

On March 14th, 2011, Junious Brickhouse, aka House (Urban Artistry), and I (Nomadic Wax) traveled from Washington DC to Cape Town as cultural envoys with the US State Department. The 2011 exchange had grown out of a project initiated by Nomadic Wax and myself during the summer of 2010. This project, The 2010 Cape Town 2 DC arts exchange, brought two of South Africa’s leading hip hop artist activists, DJ Thee Angelo and Emile YX?, to Washington DC for two weeks of collaboration with local artists and activists. As members of Black Noise (one of South Africa’s first hip hop groups and dance crews), arts activists, and educators with the non- profit Heal the Hood, these two artists were able to contribute indispensable knowledge and experience to the program.
Working with artists like former State Department Hip Hop Ambassador Kokayi, B-Boy IronMan, Flex Mathews, and DJ RBI (of Words, Beats, Life, Inc), we created a space to share strategies, workflows, and methodology. Among the many partnerships the exchange created, the strongest relationship was formed with DC dance collective Urban Artistry.
Upon their return to South Africa, Heal the Hood began to work with the US Consulate in Cape Town to plan a return exchange, and to further strengthen the relationships that had been formed between the two arts communities. Heal the Hood?s partnership with the consulate resulted in the organizing of the second installment of the exchange which began in 2010. As representatives of US hip hop culture and our respective art forms, Junious and I were invited to South Africa to further strengthen the relationship with Heal the Hood and the South African arts community, as well as connect and work directly with local youth throughout the country. The mission of the project was to both identify and connect with underserved youth in the townships of Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban. As both role models and educators, we were to conduct workshops with youth within our respective fields of expertise: ‘house’ dance & film.
Upon touchdown in Cape Town, it soon became apparent how dramatic the need for sustained youth work and arts activism is in Cape Town. This need was further reflected in the other locations we visited during the trip. Cape Town, and South Africa as a whole, is an extremely complex place. In Cape Town specifically, we were immediately welcomed into the realities of life in the so- called ?colored? communities throughout Mitchell?s Plain. This area is considered to have some of the worst gang-related violence in the world, and it is safe to say that young people in these neighborhoods are faced with very hard decisions on a daily basis. It was truly an honor to witness the work of Heal The Hood in these communities. Their approach is extremely effective and their access is unparalleled. Through dance and hip hop culture as a whole, Emile and his crew of young educators—who come from the very same neighborhoods– are able to foster the confidence of these young boys and girls, instilling in them a new sense of identity. They help these youth re-contextualize the idea of being ?African? as something positive– a message that is very much absent in many of the communities we visited. Their model for working with at-risk youth in the often-ignored black Afrikaans communities is very impressive.

South African youth love Kwaito, which is the country’s own version of House music. Despite the prevalence of House music, knowledge of the actual dance techniques and the music genre?s history is somewhat lacking. Junious is a pro. I was very impressed with how he was able to jump into any situation and get kids (sometimes groups of 20, sometimes around 100) moving and having fun, while telling them the story of the music, and contextualizing it for them. In communities with few opportunities for traditional career paths, dance can be a way out. What is impressive about Junious and Emile?s work is that it places equal importance on technical skill, as well as building confidence and love for one’s-self. Not everyone will be able to tour the world like Black Noise have, but confidence and self-worth are important in all aspects of life.
As for me, my workshops focused on the basics of filmmaking. They were generally made up of kids who were very curious about film (especially horror films as a matter of fact) and dying to know how special effects worked, as well as the kids who were too shy to participate in the dance workshops. Knowing time constraints and equipment access were going to be an issue, I constructed my film workshops to focus on several key points. BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play reveals the complexity of carving out a self-defined identity as a black female in urban American culture. In a society where black women are often only portrayed in terms of their strength, resiliency, or trauma, this work seeks to interrogate these narratives by representing a nuanced spectrum of black womanhood in a racially and politically charged world.
With original music compositions (live music by pianist, Scott Patterson and electric bassist, Tracy Wormworth), Brown uses the rhythmic play of African-American dance vernacular including social dancing, double dutch, steppin’, tap, Juba, ring shout, and gesture as the black woman’s domain to evoke childhood memories of self-discovery . From play to protest the performers come into their identities, from childhood innocence to girlhood awareness to maturity—all the while shaped by their environments, the bonds of sisterhood, and society at large.

Bessie Award, Princess Grace, and Doris Duke Artist Award-winning choreographer Camille A. Brown and the women of Camille A. Brown & Dancers present the world premiere of "BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play".
The performers evolve in their identities from childhood innocence, to girlhood awareness, to maturity, all the while shaped by their environments, the bonds of sisterhood, and society at large.
Live original compositions by collaborators Scott Patterson (pianist) and Tracy Wormworth (electric bassist) encompass the rhythmic play of African-American rooted steppin’, Double Dutch, and Juba. Each performance culminates with a second-act dialogue, allowing audiences to engage with the artists on stage.

Bessie Award, Princess Grace, and Doris Duke Artist Award-winning choreographer Camille A. Brown and the women of Camille A. Brown & Dancers present the world premiere of "BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play".
The performers evolve in their identities from childhood innocence, to girlhood awareness, to maturity, all the while shaped by their environments, the bonds of sisterhood, and society at large.
Live original compositions by collaborators Scott Patterson (pianist) and Tracy Wormworth (electric bassist) encompass the rhythmic play of African-American rooted steppin’, Double Dutch, and Juba. Each performance culminates with a second-act dialogue, allowing audiences to engage with the artists on stage.

Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. There are some people clearly born to follow the path they have chosen from the start. Mani Nasry has the passion to succeed, the curiosity and ingenuity required to lead and collaborate in an industry known for its impact and appeal, and the strength of character and work ethic to immerse himself in finding and telling an unforgettable story.

Ipi Ntombi is a joyous, homegrown dance and music celebration of black South African culture. First performed in 1974, the production, with a phenomenally talented and energetic cast of 50, has delighted audiences all over the world.Ipi Ntombi might well be regarded as a national opera of South Africa.
The story is so primal that it seems to have sprung directly from South African soil. It begins in a tiny village with thundering ceremonial dances in colorful tribal costumes. A tender love story emerges between a village girl and young man, who has gone away to work in the mines. As her sweetheart travels from the countryside to the city, tribal ceremonies morph into break dancing, jubilant South African rock & roll, and gospel singing. The youth, torn between his village roots and urban temptations, personifies the essential African conflict between the ancient and modern worlds.
I've seen this show 3 times in 1980 ( Luxor Theater Rotterdan The Netherlands) My grand mother & father visited in 1974 Africa (Johannesburg) for a holiday trip. A African taxi driver advised them to visit the show. After the show they bought the vinyl record for the whole family. I still treasure these moments while I was a little kid and watching the show.
