Litter in the Thames is harming marine life both in the river and out at sea.

A new campaign, ‘For Fish’s Sake’ has launched to highlight the importance of keeping the river clean, for those who cherish it the most.

Four short films have been produced, focusing on individuals who live, work or play on the river. The Standard has already published the first two films here.

Martin has been working on the river since he left school at 16; the Thames is “like another home” for him.

He started off as a deckhand, worked his way up, and became a diver for the Port of London. He’s been Master of the Driftwood II for the past two years.

For Martin working on the Thames is “a big community, everyone knows each other, you get along with everyone, and I love it.”

The river has “a lot of history to it. It goes through the heart of our capital. Everything really revolves around the water.”

The video shows large amounts of waste being removed from the river. The typical city rubbish such as food wrappers, disposable crockery and cigarette butts are less likely to make it into a bin and harder to retrieve once they are in the environment.

The film ends by Martin saying “the Thames is my responsibility.”

Litter in both the river and the ocean is breaking down and being eaten by and harming birds, fish and other species.

Research has found that seven in ten of people think that the Thames is too polluted for fish to survive, but there are 125 species living in this river that need protecting.

#FFSLDN is calling on Londoners to help stem the flow of litter into the Thames. Here’s what you can do:

  • Use the bin - not the gutter, not the river, not the pavement
  • If you see some litter and you're near a bin - pick it up
  • If the bin is full, find another one or take your litter home
