Brisbane thump Gold Coast
The Lions defeat Gold Coast 142-84 for their fifth win of the season.
Dean Solomon would have been pleased – at quarter time. The former Essendon and Fremantle hard man, and interim Gold Coast Suns coach, has acknowledged his team needed to be more physical, especially when they didn't have the ball. There wasn't a better opportunity for them to show it than against the Brisbane Lions.Â
The response from his team was fierce. At the end of that first quarter, they were smashing the Lions in the contest, David Swallow a wrecking ball in the middle. And when they didn't have possession, the Suns tackled like their lives depended on it, finishing with 62 to 52 – 25 to 6 in the forward 50 particularly impressive.Â
Sure enough, scoring opportunities opened up. Six goals to three in the first quarter was the result, Jack Martin kicking three of them in three minutes. The Lions, starting as rare favourites against a team missing three of their best players in Gary Ablett, Tom Lynch and Pearce Hanley, were rattled.Â
But games aren't won in a quarter.Â
It's the classic test of an immature team: to win the game they're actually expected to win. It demanded leadership, and it was Lions captain Dayne Beams who provided it, taking an ice-cool set shot by himself to steady the Lions in the first quarter, taking the responsibility again in the second as he took the game by the scruff of the neck.Â
Quickly, the game flipped. Two perfect Beams kicks found Josh Walker and brother Claye for goals. By half-time, the Lions had reversed a 21-point deficit to lead by one, still losing the inside 50 count, but scything through the Suns with their ball movement through the middle. They're going to do that to a lot of sides next year.Â
Beams was like a lead husky, dragging his team along on a sled, young and older teammates alike. Tom Rockliff was next in line, not only for grunt, but hitting the scoreboard too. On the outside Lewis Taylor, having a wonderful year, barely wasted a possession and also kicked a couple.Â
The third quarter featured some of the Lions' best football for the year, six more goals to one all but finishing the game. Their ball movement by hand was especially slick. They may be on the bottom of the ladder, but it is hard to believe this is the same side that turned the ball over so easily last year, and then stopped running to chase it.Â
A number of players have made a difference. Hugh McCluggage in his first year has added class; Alex Witherden, too, though out injured today. The improvement of Sam Mayes and Ryan Lester, in his 100th game today. They are two of a number of Lions having their best years: add Taylor, Dan McStay, the oft-maligned Daniel Rich.Â
But Beams, out most of last year with calf troubles, has made the biggest difference of all. He finished the game with four goals – one in each quarter – and four direct assists, on top of 31 possessions, to be a clear and deserving winner of the Ashcroft medal. It was a wonderfully complete performance.Â
Even players who might politely be described as stopgaps – Ryan Bastinac and Josh Walker – are more than playing their roles. That says something about leadership too, and it's surely coming from the coach's box. It can't be a coincidence to get that level of improvement across the board, and it's a credit to Chris Fagan and his team.Â
As it stands, they're still on the bottom of the ladder and may yet climb a rung if they can get over North Melbourne in a couple of weeks. And it would be deserved. Frankly, this team needs the morale boost and the belief more than they need the number one draft pick, and they're playing like they know better times are at hand.Â
For the Suns, the light on the horizon looks a lot further away.
