Ecclesiastical Latin (also called Liturgical Latin or Church Latin) is the form of the Latin language used in the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church for liturgical and other purposes. It is distinguished from Classical Latin by some lexical variations, a simplified syntax and Italianate pronunciation.
The Ecclesiastical Latin used in theological works, liturgical rites and dogmatic proclamations varies in style: syntactically simple in the Vulgate Bible, hieratic in the Roman Canon of the Mass, terse and technical in Aquinas' Summa Theologica, and Ciceronian in Pope John Paul II's encyclical letter Fides et Ratio. Ecclesiastical Latin is the official language of the Holy See and the only surviving sociolect of spoken Latin.
The Church issued the dogmatic definitions of the first seven General Councils in Greek, and even in Rome Greek remained at first the language of the liturgy and the language in which the first Popes wrote. During the Late Republic and Early Empire periods, educated Roman citizens were generally fluent in Greek, although state business was conducted in Latin.
Latin (i/ˈlætᵻn/; Latin: lingua latīna, IPA: [ˈlɪŋɡʷa laˈtiːna]) is a classical language belonging to the Italic branch of the Indo-European languages. The Latin alphabet is derived from the Etruscan and Greek alphabets.
Latin was originally spoken in Latium, Italy. Through the power of the Roman Republic, it became the dominant language, initially in Italy and subsequently throughout the Roman Empire. Vulgar Latin developed into the Romance languages, such as French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Romanian. Latin and French have contributed many words to the English language. Latin – along with Greek – roots are used in theology, biology, and medicine.
By the late Roman Republic (75 BC), Old Latin had been standardized into Classical Latin. Vulgar Latin was the colloquial form spoken during the same time and attested in inscriptions and the works of comic playwrights like Plautus and Terence.Late Latin is the written language beginning in the 3rd century AD and Medieval Latin the language used from the ninth century until the Renaissance which used Renaissance Latin. Later, Early Modern Latin and Modern Latin evolved. Latin was used as the language of international communication, scholarship, and science until well into the 18th century, when it began to be supplanted by vernaculars. Ecclesiastical Latin remains the official language of the Holy See and the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church.
Toledo most commonly refers to Toledo, Ohio or Toledo, Spain, or Toledo (surname).
Toledo may refer to:
St. Martin's Cathedral, Utrecht, or Dom Church (Dutch: Domkerk), was the cathedral of the Diocese of Utrecht during the Middle Ages. Once the Netherlands' largest church, dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, it is one of the country's two pre-Reformation cathedrals, along with the cathedral in Middelburg, Zeeland. It has been a Protestant church since 1580. The building is the one church in the Netherlands that closely resembles the style of classic Gothic architecture as developed in France. All other Gothic churches in the Netherlands belong to one of the many regional variants. Unlike most of its French predecessors, the building has only one tower, the 112-metre-high (367 ft) Dom Tower, which is the hallmark of the city.
In 1674 the central portion of the cathedral with the nave collapsed in a storm, a tornado ripped through Utrecht causing many to die and split the cathedral in two. It has never been rebuilt, leaving the tower now isolated from the east end.

Ecclesiastical Latin and Classical Latin are two different types of Latin which differ in some aspects, and in this video I will cover these differences. Audemus dicere! 2SPetrvs dares to announce a new series designed for beginners and children, focusing on Ecclesiastical Latin. With the additional support of the voices of the Popes, we will cover select (liturgical, linguistic, cultural, historical, etc) concepts, learn about and the pronunciations of key prayers for the home and the Sacred Liturgy, and -in advanced episodes- gain an appreciation for the mechanics of the Latin language, in particular the logical grammatical structure. The scope is not an all encompassing Latin course, but rather, Liturgical Latin course. We want to help you pray and sing in the Traditional Latin Mass, pray in Latin at home alone or with friends and loved ones, or simply for you to gain an understanding and appreciation for the mother tongue of the Church...
I wonder how many people sit through Catholic mass spoken in Latin and have any idea what's being said.
To maintain my firm belief that pronouncing Church Latin is easy I made this quick video. The video covers A, E, I, O, U plus AE, OE, Y and AU. Also the consonants C and G. Hope it helps.

What if life is nothing but a bright sunny day in the middle of two endless winters? I've made this video for "Ainda" (Still), a song by the Portuguese group Madredeus. Besides the name of the track, "Ainda" is also the original motion picture soundtrack from «Lisbon Story», a film written and directed by Wim Wenders, and featuring the famous folk music band. I've translated the lyrics. The quote in the beginning was taken from the Ecclesiastical History of the English People by the Venerable Bede. Written in Latin, around 730, the book was translated into Old English sometime in the 9th century. I've rendered this old text into Modern English, trying to preserve the roughness of the original. In this video I've further developed my former technique, using STILL PICTURES on 3 different...

‘In Lumine Tuo…’, uses light as a narrative tool to unite the Dom Tower with the Dom Church and Dom Square in a unique and entrancing tableau. The title is an allusion to the Latin saying “In lumine tuo videbimus lumen” – “In your light we shall see the light” And, indeed, this work literally lights up the ecclesiastical history of the centre of Utrecht. After dark, every fifteen minutes, the installation begins with the three elements beginning to ‘breathe’ as a lighting sequence connects and unifies them. Light glows through the stained glass windows and illuminates the internal faces of the buttresses of the Dom Church, depicting ‘the light from within’. In the Dom Square the memories of the past are recalled, the light highlighting the space where the west end of the Dom Church once s...

From Vatican.va, an excerpt from the teachings of Pope Benedict XVI General Audience 2007 Cyril’s writings – truly numerous and already widely disseminated in various Latin and Eastern translations in his own lifetime, attested to by their instant success – are of the utmost importance for the history of Christianity. His commentaries on many of the New and Old Testament Books are important, including those on the entire Pentateuch, Isaiah, the Psalms and the Gospels of John and Luke. Also important are his many doctrinal works, in which the defense of the Trinitarian faith against the Arian and Nestorian theses recurs. The basis of Cyril’s teaching is the ecclesiastical tradition and in particular, as I mentioned, the writings of Athanasius, his great Predecessor in the See of Alexandria...

Focusing on this object and the Latin text it bears (which means 'Rise up, O Lord, and may thy enemies be dispersed and those who hate thee be driven from thy face') enables us to reflect on the circumstances in which Christianity was introduced to the war-like Germanic peoples of Anglo-Saxon England.
