www.bayareahq.com - Paramount Pictures, with the Curran theater and the San Francisco Film Society, will present the San Francisco Premiere of the film Fences, which has been adapted into a motion picture by the late August Wilson. The event, 30 years after the play first played at the Curran theater ahead of its Broadway premiere, will reopen the Curran following a just-completed, extensive renovation.
FENCES is directed by Denzel Washington from a screenplay by August Wilson, adapted from Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. The film stars Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson, and Saniyya Sidney. The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Denzel Washington and Todd Black.
The original stage play of Fences, produced by Carole Shorenstein Hays and starring James Earl Jones and Mary Alice, premiered at the Curran theater on February 6, 1987 and opened on Broadway that spring. It went on to win the Tony Award for Best Play, as well as the Pulitzer Prize. The Tony Award was again given to Fences for the Broadway revival, which opened in the spring of 2010, produced by Carole Shorenstein Hays and Scott Rudin, and starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis (who both won Tony Awards for their roles as Leading Actor and Actress).

Denzel Washington
Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. (born December 28, 1954) is an American actor and filmmaker. He has received three Golden Globe awards, a Tony Award, and two Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actor for the historical war drama film Glory (1989) and Best Actor for his role as a corrupt cop in the crime thriller Training Day (2001).
Washington has received much critical acclaim for his film work since the 1990s, including his portrayals of real-life figures such as South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko in Cry Freedom (1987), Muslim minister and human rights activist Malcolm X in Malcolm X (1992), boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter in The Hurricane (1999), football coach Herman Boone in Remember the Titans (2000), poet and educator Melvin B. Tolson in The Great Debaters (2007), and drug kingpin Frank Lucas in American Gangster (2007). He has been a featured actor in the films produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and has been a frequent collaborator of directors Spike Lee and the late Tony Scott. In 2016 he was selected as the recipient for the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards.

The event, 30 years after the play first played at the Curran theater ahead of its Broadway premiere, will reopen the Curran following a just-completed, extensive renovation.
FENCES is directed by Denzel Washington from a screenplay by August Wilson, adapted from Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. The film stars Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson, and Saniyya Sidney. The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Denzel Washington and Todd Black.
The original stage play of Fences, produced by Carole Shorenstein Hays and starring James Earl Jones and Mary Alice, premiered at the Curran theater on February 6, 1987 and opened on Broadway that spring. It went on to win the Tony Award for Best Play, as well as the Pulitzer Prize. The Tony Award was again given to Fences for the Broadway revival, which opened in the spring of 2010, produced by Carole Shorenstein Hays and Scott Rudin, and starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis (who both won Tony Awards for their roles as Leading Actor and Actress).

Award winning filmmaker, Angelo Bell, takes time to chat with us about the exciting launch of a massive crowdfunding campaign for a new film project entitled, “A Perfect Weapon”.
“A Perfect Weapon” ‘s plot melds action, intrigue, espionage, sex … and follows the story of a disgraced US Marshal who is reinstated to track down a female terrorist. Is it more action or a character driven drama ... how would you describe the story?
The story is essentially a thriller, which I think falls right into my niche as a filmmaker and storyteller. Because I don’t have an “action film” budget, I concentrated on things I love writing like, suspense, deception; dynamic, colorful and obscure dialog, conflict, sexual tension - all the visceral elements that engage you.
“A Perfect Weapon” is about Shey, a US Marshal, who has made the mistake of getting intimately involved with women during his missions, whether they are escapees, runners or Federal witnesses. Now, Shey has a chance to redeem himself, but he seems to be falling back into his old habits with Femi, this beautiful coquettish, escaped prisoner who we immediately recognize is special in more ways than one. As the pursuit continues, we start to see that there’s something dark and sinister going on behind the scenes, but we can’t quite put our fingers on it.
What was the inspiration for “A Perfect Weapon”?
As a young writer, two of my favorite movies were Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. I like the conspiracy, the big reveals of government deception, and the dogged pursuit of the truth. I watched those movies a hundred times and Harrison Ford was badass. Then, I was moved by the storytelling of the Swedish version of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy. Unfortunately, American audiences often do not appreciate the difference in storytelling with foreign films, and thus we get “remakes,” but I love European films. With “A Perfect Weapon” I wanted to emulate a type of Tom Clancy-like conspiracy and set it in a cat & mouse pursuit that’s more emotional and psychological than physical. Every film I’ve made has had a strong female lead. I like writing empowered, flawed and badass roles for women – I think viscerally and visually it’s cooler to see on the screen. In this project I wanted to have a male counterpart, who essentially takes us on this journey where we begin to uncover the ugly truth behind the woman’s past as he reveals part of his own ugly past as well.
At this point, how long have you been working on development of “A Perfect Weapon”?
I first wrote “A Perfect Weapon” back in 2010 when I went on a crazy insane writing spree and I finished two feature length screenplays in one month. At the time it was called “Deterrence Theory,” which was a play off the Cuban Missile Crisis issues in the 70’s, where it was postulated that the threat of nuclear retaliation and the subsequent devastation is sufficient deterrent to keep our enemies at bay. I’d always wanted the story to be a classic suspense thriller with action elements – but the difference would be that every major character would be a person of color. While race itself would not be an issue in the story, I thought it was time to have a classic thriller with people who looked like my friends and me. My process was to make most of the characters, Black, Latino, Indian, African and Asian. Since 2010 the script has been rewritten about fifteen times. Then in 2012 I submitted it to Juntobox Films for consideration. During a Google+ Hangout with the Juntobox development team, one of the execs said my script was, “very sexy.” At the time it became the most viewed project on the website. I continued to rewrite it again, focusing on character development and budget and now it’s almost ready.
The characters Shey, Femi, Marcela, etc., all come across as multi-layered and palpable human beings. Did you have certain actors in mind while you were writing “A Perfect Weapon”?
I only had one actor in mind when I wrote “A Perfect Weapon” and that was Denzel Washington. Remember how flawed and in turmoil Denzel’s character was in “Man On Fire” when he played Creasy? That’s what I was going for. I wanted both my characters, Shey and Femi, to have a high degree of obsessive intensity like Creasy, and that’s why I’m happy with my two stars, Alimi and Tehmina. They are incredibly talented, sexy, good-looking and intense!
You have recognizable named actors attached to the project already, such as Alimi Ballard, Tehmina Sunny, Emayatzy Corinealdi, and Ravi Kapoor. Share with us about the casting process and how each of them was brought on board the project?
As a writer you must create such colorful characters and employ such dynamic storytelling techniques and dialog that either an actor immediately gets it or they don’t. That’s how my

Coati Mundi, the adopted professional name of “Sugarcoated Andy Hernandez”, hails originally from Spanish Harlem NYC . He majored in business management at NYU but spent most of his free time hanging with poets, actors and musicians while occasionally entertaining the troops during NYU student strikes. After graduating from NYU he bypassed wall street and got a gig in El Barrio as a social worker. Serving as a community advocate for PINS (person in need of supervision) prepared him for the arduous and stressful business of show. Eventually Coati answered his true calling and has been blessed to serve the entertainment business in various capacities. He has worked with an array of renowned artists including Carlos Alomar, Paul Anka, Ruben Blades, Jocelyn Brown, Ray Chew, Lisa Fischer, Deborah Gibson, Salma Hayek, Nona Hendryx, Oscar Hernandez, Chrissie Hynde, Wyclef Jean, Grace Jones, Andy & Jerry Gonzalez, Raul Julia, Alan King, Spike Lee, Melissa Leo, Harry Lookofsky, La Lupe, Machito, Madonna, Paul Morrisey, David Nadien, Nico, Karyn Parsons, Tito Puente, Vernon Reid, Sly & Robbie, Paul Rodriguez, The Roots, Gustavo Santaolalla, Wanda Sykes, Phoebe Snow, Judy Tenuta, Eddie Torres and of course the “Olsen Twins”.

Mundi’s maiden voyage into the major leagues commenced back in the day when platform shoes, designer jeans and a white polyester suit with an open collar shirt reigned supreme. He however joined a band of rebellious upstarts who went against the proverbial grain and it resulted in melodic mayhem. Their debut album featuring the pioneering hit single titled “Cherchez la Femme” went multi-platinum and they were nominated for a Grammy as “Best New Artist”. The Zoot suited, Fedora wearing band of mulatto miscreants was “Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band”
Mundi has been a Music Director for live and TV events. Credits include the Desi Awards (Paul Rodriguez - Host), Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing and BAM Presents The Latin Connection Concert which featured celebrated artists such as Nona Hendryx, Joe Bataan, Vernon Reid, Cory Daye and Carl Hancock Rux.
The 70‘s Disco period was a magical time full of wonderment and discovery. One was young and looking forward to a loss of innocence while putting the immune system to the test. The drugs were mandatory but medicinal; the sex was hot but harmless; last but never least the music was mighty. Yes the 60’s was hip and groovy but the sex was shoeless, the drugs were delusional and outside the mambo community the dancing was dumb. Mundi feels that Disco has historically received a bad rap. From Disco came amazing singers and groups like Donna Summer, Cory Daye, Gloria Gaynor, Thelma Houston, Frances Jolie, Luther Vandross, Jocelyn Brown, Chic, GQ, Wild Cherry, Dazz Band, Village People, DC LaRue, Brothers Johnson and one can go and on. Even some of the rockers joined in on the festivities like AWB, Bee Gees, Rolling Stone, Rod Stewart and Blondie. That whole disco demolition night fiasco in Comiskey Park was motivated by ignorance, fear, envy and hate. It killed disco temporarily but now it is back and in fact it is one of the most sampled genre. Disco gave rise to dance music including Rap and Chicago House. Disco theme parties and Disco retro bands dominate the private party landscape. In every sports event and baseball stadium including Comiskey Park people are doing the Village People’s “YMCA” dance routine. Disco songs are constantly being covered by today’s artist. In other words DISCO LIVES !!! Alas like many pop groups Savannah Band went from making millions to dodging the repo man. Eventually he did get a second wind and partnered up with fellow Savannah Band comrade August Darnell to form the critically acclaimed Kid Creole & The Coconuts where he served as Co-Leader and Musical Director. He played percussion, danced, sang and composed. In fact his pioneering Spanglish rap song “Que Pasa/Me No Pop I”, originally released as “Kid Creole & The Coconuts Presents Coati Mundi”, was the first hit for the group garnishing them major international attention. His zany energetic theatrical performances as Kid Creole’s comic foil sidekick had been lauded by fans worldwide including Barry Manilow, Prince, Madonna, Denzel Washington, Paul Schaffer, Spike Lee, Rick James, Def Leppard, Lady Diana and Michael J. Jackson. A group highlight was performing a sold out show at Carnegie Hall. Coati also worked on many of the Kid Creole off shoot projects including record producer for the #1 dance hit “Deputy of Love” by the “2nd Avenue Rhumba” and as Horn & String arranger for Gichy Dan’s Beachwood #9.

It takes place during a period of political turmoil in the Russian Federation, in which ultranationalists threaten to launch nuclear missiles at the United States and Japan. It focuses on a clash of wills between the new executive officer (Denzel Washington) of a U.S. nuclear missile submarine and its seasoned commanding officer (Gene Hackman), arising from conflicting interpretations of an order to launch their missiles. The film was scored by Hans Zimmer, who won a Grammy Award for the main theme, which makes heavy use of synthesizers in place of traditional orchestral instruments. “A Perfect Weapon” ‘s plot melds action, intrigue, espionage, sex … and follows the story of a disgraced US Marshal who is reinstated to track down a female terrorist. Is it more action or a character driven drama ... how would you describe the story?
The story is essentially a thriller, which I think falls right into my niche as a filmmaker and storyteller. Because I don’t have an “action film” budget, I concentrated on things I love writing like, suspense, deception; dynamic, colorful and obscure dialog, conflict, sexual tension - all the visceral elements that engage you.
“A Perfect Weapon” is about Shey, a US Marshal, who has made the mistake of getting intimately involved with women during his missions, whether they are escapees, runners or Federal witnesses. Now, Shey has a chance to redeem himself, but he seems to be falling back into his old habits with Femi, this beautiful coquettish, escaped prisoner who we immediately recognize is special in more ways than one. As the pursuit continues, we start to see that there’s something dark and sinister going on behind the scenes, but we can’t quite put our fingers on it.
What was the inspiration for “A Perfect Weapon”?
As a young writer, two of my favorite movies were Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. I like the conspiracy, the big reveals of government deception, and the dogged pursuit of the truth. I watched those movies a hundred times and Harrison Ford was badass. Then, I was moved by the storytelling of the Swedish version of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy. Unfortunately, American audiences often do not appreciate the difference in storytelling with foreign films, and thus we get “remakes,” but I love European films. With “A Perfect Weapon” I wanted to emulate a type of Tom Clancy-like conspiracy and set it in a cat & mouse pursuit that’s more emotional and psychological than physical. Every film I’ve made has had a strong female lead. I like writing empowered, flawed and badass roles for women – I think viscerally and visually it’s cooler to see on the screen. In this project I wanted to have a male counterpart, who essentially takes us on this journey where we begin to uncover the ugly truth behind the woman’s past as he reveals part of his own ugly past as well.
At this point, how long have you been working on development of “A Perfect Weapon”?
I first wrote “A Perfect Weapon” back in 2010 when I went on a crazy insane writing spree and I finished two feature length screenplays in one month. At the time it was called “Deterrence Theory,” which was a play off the Cuban Missile Crisis issues in the 70’s, where it was postulated that the threat of nuclear retaliation and the subsequent devastation is sufficient deterrent to keep our enemies at bay. I’d always wanted the story to be a classic suspense thriller with action elements – but the difference would be that every major character would be a person of color. While race itself would not be an issue in the story, I thought it was time to have a classic thriller with people who looked like my friends and me. My process was to make most of the characters, Black, Latino, Indian, African and Asian. Since 2010 the script has been rewritten about fifteen times. Then in 2012 I submitted it to Juntobox Films for consideration. During a Google+ Hangout with the Juntobox development team, one of the execs said my script was, “very sexy.” At the time it became the most viewed project on the website. I continued to rewrite it again, focusing on character development and budget and now it’s almost ready.
The characters Shey, Femi, Marcela, etc., all come across as multi-layered and palpable human beings. Did you have certain actors in mind while you were writing “A Perfect Weapon”?
I only had one actor in mind when I wrote “A Perfect Weapon” and that was Denzel Washington. Remember how flawed and in turmoil Denzel’s character was in “Man On Fire” when he played Creasy? That’s what I was going for. I wanted both my characters, Shey and Femi, to have a high degree of obsessive intensity like Creasy, and that’s why I’m happy with my two stars, Alimi and Tehmina. They are incredibly talented, sexy, good-looking and intense!
You have recognizable named actors attached to the project already, such as Alimi Ballard, Tehmina Sunny, Emayatzy Corinealdi, and Ravi Kapoor. Share with us about the casting process and how each of them was brought on board the project?

Award winning filmmaker, Angelo Bell, takes time to chat with us about the exciting launch of a massive crowdfunding campaign for a new film project entitled, “A Perfect Weapon”.
“A Perfect Weapon” ‘s plot melds action, intrigue, espionage, sex … and follows the story of a disgraced US Marshal who is reinstated to track down a female terrorist. Is it more action or a character driven drama ... how would you describe the story?
The story is essentially a thriller, which I think falls right into my niche as a filmmaker and storyteller. Because I don’t have an “action film” budget, I concentrated on things I love writing like, suspense, deception; dynamic, colorful and obscure dialog, conflict, sexual tension - all the visceral elements that engage you.
“A Perfect Weapon” is about Shey, a US Marshal, who has made the mistake of getting intimately involved with women during his missions, whether they are escapees, runners or Federal witnesses. Now, Shey has a chance to redeem himself, but he seems to be falling back into his old habits with Femi, this beautiful coquettish, escaped prisoner who we immediately recognize is special in more ways than one. As the pursuit continues, we start to see that there’s something dark and sinister going on behind the scenes, but we can’t quite put our fingers on it.

After graduating from NYU he bypassed wall street and got a gig in El Barrio as a social worker. Serving as a community advocate for PINS (person in need of supervision) prepared him for the arduous and stressful business of show. Eventually Coati answered his true calling and has been blessed to serve the entertainment business in various capacities. Mundi’s maiden voyage into the major leagues commenced back in the day when platform shoes, designer jeans and a white polyester suit with an open collar shirt reigned supreme. He however joined a band of rebellious upstarts who went against the proverbial grain and it resulted in melodic mayhem. Their debut album featuring the pioneering hit single titled “Cherchez la Femme” went multi-platinum and they were nominated for a Grammy as “Best New Artist”. The Zoot suited, Fedora wearing band of mulatto miscreants was “Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band”
Mundi has been a Music Director for live and TV events. Credits include the Desi Awards (Paul Rodriguez - Host), Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing and BAM Presents The Latin Connection Concert which featured celebrated artists such as Nona Hendryx, Joe Bataan, Vernon Reid, Cory Daye and Carl Hancock Rux.
The 70‘s Disco period was a magical time full of wonderment and discovery. One was young and looking forward to a loss of innocence while putting the immune system to the test. The drugs were mandatory but medicinal; the sex was hot but harmless; last but never least the music was mighty. Yes the 60’s was hip and groovy but the sex was shoeless, the drugs were delusional and outside the mambo community the dancing was dumb. Mundi feels that Disco has historically received a bad rap. From Disco came amazing singers and groups like Donna Summer, Cory Daye, Gloria Gaynor, Thelma Houston, Frances Jolie, Luther Vandross, Jocelyn Brown, Chic, GQ, Wild Cherry, Dazz Band, Village People, DC LaRue, Brothers Johnson and one can go and on. Even some of the rockers joined in on the festivities like AWB, Bee Gees, Rolling Stone, Rod Stewart and Blondie. That whole disco demolition night fiasco in Comiskey Park was motivated by ignorance, fear, envy and hate. It killed disco temporarily but now it is back and in fact it is one of the most sampled genre. Disco gave rise to dance music including Rap and Chicago House. Disco theme parties and Disco retro bands dominate the private party landscape. In every sports event and baseball stadium including Comiskey Park people are doing the Village People’s “YMCA” dance routine. Disco songs are constantly being covered by today’s artist. In other words DISCO LIVES !!! Alas like many pop groups Savannah Band went from making millions to dodging the repo man. Eventually he did get a second wind and partnered up with fellow Savannah Band comrade August Darnell to form the critically acclaimed Kid Creole & The Coconuts where he served as Co-Leader and Musical Director. He played percussion, danced, sang and composed. In fact his pioneering Spanglish rap song “Que Pasa/Me No Pop I”, originally released as “Kid Creole & The Coconuts Presents Coati Mundi”, was the first hit for the group garnishing them major international attention. His zany energetic theatrical performances as Kid Creole’s comic foil sidekick had been lauded by fans worldwide including Barry Manilow, Prince, Madonna, Denzel Washington, Paul Schaffer, Spike Lee, Rick James, Def Leppard, Lady Diana and Michael J. Jackson. A group highlight was performing a sold out show at Carnegie Hall. Coati also worked on many of the Kid Creole off shoot projects including record producer for the #1 dance hit “Deputy of Love” by the “2nd Avenue Rhumba” and as Horn & String arranger for Gichy Dan’s Beachwood #9.
