Andy Murray, the three-time Grand Slam champion and the No. 2 men's player in the world, withdrew from the U.S. Open on Saturday. He became the latest in a string of prominent players who have pulled out of the event, which begins on Monday.
Murray has been suffering from a hip injury since the French Open, he said, and it grew more acute at Wimbledon.
"I did pretty much everything that I could to get myself ready here and took a number of weeks off after Wimbledon," he said.
"I obviously spoke to a lot of hip specialists. Tried obviously resting, rehabbing, to try and get myself ready here. I was actually practicing OK the last few days, but it's too sore for me to win the tournament, and ultimately that's what I was here to try and do."
Murray, who won the 2012 U.S. Open, joined Novak Djokovic (elbow), Stan Wawrinka (knee) and Milos Raonic (wrist) on the list of players who have dropped out. And Roger Federer, who is still entered, is dealing with a bad back.
On the women's side, Serena Williams is absent because of her pregnancy, and Victoria Azarenka withdrew because of a child custody matter.
