In good economic times or bad, the typical poor family with children is supported by only 800 hours of work during a year: That amounts to 16 hours of work per week. If work in each family were raised to 2,000 hours per year-the equivalent of one adult working 40 hours per week throughout the year- nearly 75 percent of poor children would be lifted out of official poverty.
Father absence is another major cause of child poverty. Nearly two-thirds of poor children reside in single-parent homes; each year, an additional 1.5 million children are born out of wedlock. If poor mothers married the fathers of their children, almost three-quarters would immediately be lifted out of poverty.
Each year, the U.S. imports, through both legal and illegal immigration, hundreds of thousands of additional poor persons from abroad. As a result, one-quarter of all poor persons in the U.S. are now first-generation immigrants or the minor children of those immigrants. Roughly one in ten of the persons counted among the poor by the Census Bureau is either an illegal immigrant or the minor child of an illegal.
In the late 1990s, the United States established a reasonable record in reducing child poverty. Successful anti-poverty policies were partially implemented in the welfare reform legislation of 1996, which replaced the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program with a new program called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF).
In general, children born and raised outside marriage are seven times more likely to live in poverty than are children born and raised by married couples.
"Religion has a big influence on giving patterns," said the Chronicle. "Regions of the country that are deeply religious are more generous than those that are not."

The Dajla refugee camp is in the far-western corner of Algeria.
It is home to some 50,000 Saharawis, who had to leave their territories in Western Sahara.
Their plight has now lasted 30 years
STORYLINE
It's been described by some here as one of the worst places in the world to live.
A scare and dirty supply of water, no crops, searing temperatures of 50 degrees in summer and frequent sand storms make this corner of the Sahara desert insufferable.
The Saharawis have been forced to make this land their home. They are dependent on food aid such as sugar which is flown in by the World Food Program.
Water is also flown in to the nearest airport and contained in huge containers. Dajla is thought to be the greenest of the 4 refugee camps that are used by the Saharawis. A small oasis and well are the camp's alternative source of water.
The Saharawis were forced to leave their territory south of Morocco in 1975 when a guerrilla campaign was started by the Saharawis' political movement - the Polisario.
Although the four refugee camps are meant to be temporary, certain buildings have a permanent feel.
The hospital is run by Doctor Ibrahim Said who was trained in Cuba. He has a long list of needs but highlights the problems facing poorly nourished children.
A small garden has been developed to produce vegetables for the refugees. Using a drip irrigation system to carefully use the most precious resource in the camp, water.
Watad runs the garden.
The Western Sahara was a Spanish administered colony since 1884. The Spaniards left in 1975 the same year the International Court of Justice recognized the Saharawis right to self determination.
But in November of 1975, under orders from Moroccan King Hassan II, over 300,000 Moroccans started to occupy the territory in a movement called the "Green March".
The Western Sahara is phosphate rich and there are thought to be oil reserves off its coast.

QUESTION: Mr. President, the Republicans in Congress are saying they can cut your budget all the way from $5 billion to $15 billion. Do you think that there is any room for substantial cuts in the budget?
THE PRESIDENT: The Congress can make a judgment on that, but I think we reduced the requests of the three services by $13 billion, and we cut out the program such as, the Skybolt, and we decided not to go ahead with the installation of Nike-Zeus, and there are many very hard decisions made in reaching the figure that we reached.
Now, this idea that there are three services and therefore you can save $3 billion by cutting $1 billion out of each and at the same time when a good many members make speeches which are very militant, which would suggest that the solution to our problems can best be obtained by war actions or warlike actions, it doesn't seem to me that we ought to be cutting our defenses at this time.
Now, in addition to that, it has been suggested that we cut school lunches, we cut aid to dependent children. I want to see these in more detail. I think we have been generalized enough. Are you going to cut these kinds of programs which are essential to a better life for our people? Are we going to make a determination that we are going to be permanently second-best in space? Because if you cut the space programs substantially, that is what you are writing into law, and I thought the United States made a commitment that we were not going to be second permanently. We are not going to be second in the field of national security. The fact of the matter is the Congress last year appropriated half a billion dollars more than we had requested for national security. Now they are talking about cutting it $3 billion or $5 billion.
I don't think the struggle is over, so I would be opposed to those kinds of cuts, and my judgment is that we set up a hard budget. The fact of the matter is that the non-defense and non-space expenditures were held even though in the previous years for the last ten years or so, they increased by nearly seven per cent. I think we made a hard budget. You may be able to cut some of it, but I think that I want to know where they are going to cut it and whose life is going to be adversely affected by those cuts.

It is home to some 50,000 Saharawis, who had to leave their territories in Western Sahara. Their plight has now lasted 30 years STORYLINE It's been described by some here as one of the worst places in the world to live. A scare and dirty supply of water, no crops, searing temperatures of 50 degrees in summer and frequent sand storms make this corner of the Sahara desert insufferable. The Saharawis have been forced to make this land their home. They are dependent on food aid such as sugar which is flown in by the World Food Program. Water is also flown in to the nearest airport and contained in huge containers. Dajla is thought to be the greenest of the 4 refugee camps that are used by the Saharawis. A small oasis and well are the camp's alternative source of water. The Saharawis were forced to leave their territory south of Morocco in 1975 when a guerrilla campaign was started by the Saharawis' political movement - the Polisario. Although the four refugee camps are meant to be temporary, certain buildings have a permanent feel. The hospital is run by Doctor Ibrahim Said who was trained in Cuba. He has a long list of needs but highlights the problems facing poorly nourished children. A small garden has been developed to produce vegetables for the refugees. Using a drip irrigation system to carefully use the most precious resource in the camp, water. Watad runs the garden. The Western Sahara was a Spanish administered colony since 1884. The Spaniards left in 1975 the same year the International Court of Justice recognized the Saharawis right to self determination. But in November of 1975, under orders from Moroccan King Hassan II, over 300,000 Moroccans started to occupy the territory in a movement called the "Green March". The Western Sahara is phosphate rich and there are thought to be oil reserves off its coast. QUESTION: Mr. President, the Republicans in Congress are saying they can cut your budget all the way from $5 billion to $15 billion. Do you think that there is any room for substantial cuts in the budget? THE PRESIDENT: The Congress can make a judgment on that, but I think we reduced the requests of the three services by $13 billion, and we cut out the program such as, the Skybolt, and we decided not to go ahead with the installation of Nike-Zeus, and there are many very hard decisions made in reaching the figure that we reached. Now, this idea that there are three services and therefore you can save $3 billion by cutting $1 billion out of each and at the same time when a good many members make speeches which are very militant, which would suggest that the solution to our problems can best be obtained by war actions or warlike actions, it doesn't seem to me that we ought to be cutting our defenses at this time. Now, in addition to that, it has been suggested that we cut school lunches, we cut aid to dependent children. I want to see these in more detail. I think we have been generalized enough. Are you going to cut these kinds of programs which are essential to a better life for our people? Are we going to make a determination that we are going to be permanently second-best in space? Because if you cut the space programs substantially, that is what you are writing into law, and I thought the United States made a commitment that we were not going to be second permanently. We are not going to be second in the field of national security. The fact of the matter is the Congress last year appropriated half a billion dollars more than we had requested for national security. Now they are talking about cutting it $3 billion or $5 billion. I don't think the struggle is over, so I would be opposed to those kinds of cuts, and my judgment is that we set up a hard budget. The fact of the matter is that the non-defense and non-space expenditures were held even though in the previous years for the last ten years or so, they increased by nearly seven per cent. I think we made a hard budget. You may be able to cut some of it, but I think that I want to know where they are going to cut it and whose life is going to be adversely affected by those cuts. In good economic times or bad, the typical poor family with children is supported by only 800 hours of work during a year: That amounts to 16 hours of work per week. If work in each family were raised to 2,000 hours per year-the equivalent of one adult working 40 hours per week throughout the year- nearly 75 percent of poor children would be lifted out of official poverty.
Father absence is another major cause of child poverty. Nearly two-thirds of poor children reside in single-parent homes; each year, an additional 1.5 million children are born out of wedlock. If poor mothers married the fathers of their children, almost three-quarters would immediately be lifted out of poverty.
Each year, the U.S. imports, through both legal and illegal immigration, hundreds of thousands of additional poor persons from abroad. As a result, one-quarter of all poor persons in the U.S. are now first-generation immigrants or the minor children of those immigrants. Roughly one in ten of the persons counted among the poor by the Census Bureau is either an illegal immigrant or the minor child of an illegal.
In the late 1990s, the United States established a reasonable record in reducing child poverty. Successful anti-poverty policies were partially implemented in the welfare reform legislation of 1996, which replaced the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program with a new program called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF).
In general, children born and raised outside marriage are seven times more likely to live in poverty than are children born and raised by married couples.
"Religion has a big influence on giving patterns," said the Chronicle. "Regions of the country that are deeply religious are more generous than those that are not."

In good economic times or bad, the typical poor family with children is supported by only 800 hours of work during a year: That amounts to 16 hours of work per week. If work in each family were raised to 2,000 hours per year-the equivalent of one adult working 40 hours per week throughout the year- nearly 75 percent of poor children would be lifted out of official poverty.
Father absence is another major cause of child poverty. Nearly two-thirds of poor children reside in single-parent homes; each year, an additional 1.5 million children are born out of wedlock. If poor mothers married the fathers of their children, almost three-quarters would immediately be lifted out of poverty.
Each year, the U.S. imports, through both legal and illegal immigration, hundreds of thousands of additional poor persons from abroad. As a result, one-quarter of all poor persons in the U.S. are now first-generation immigrants or the minor children of those immigrants. Roughly one in ten of the persons counted among the poor by the Census Bureau is either an illegal immigrant or the minor child of an illegal.
In the late 1990s, the United States established a reasonable record in reducing child poverty. Successful anti-poverty policies were partially implemented in the welfare reform legislation of 1996, which replaced the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program with a new program called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF).
In general, children born and raised outside marriage are seven times more likely to live in poverty than are children born and raised by married couples.
"Religion has a big influence on giving patterns," said the Chronicle. "Regions of the country that are deeply religious are more generous than those that are not."

-- People who reject the idea that "government has a responsibility to reduce income inequality" give an average of four times more than people who accept that proposition.
Democrats represent a majority of the wealthiest congressional districts, and half of America's richest households live in states where both senators are Democrats.

The Dajla refugee camp is in the far-western corner of Algeria.
It is home to some 50,000 Saharawis, who had to leave their territories in Western Sahara.
Their plight has now lasted 30 years
STORYLINE
It's been described by some here as one of the worst places in the world to live.
A scare and dirty supply of water, no crops, searing temperatures of 50 degrees in summer and frequent sand storms make this corner of the Sahara desert insufferable.
The Saharawis have been forced to make this land their home. They are dependent on food aid such as sugar which is flown in by the World Food Program.
Water is also flown in to the nearest airport and contained in huge containers. Dajla is thought to be the greenest of the 4 refugee camps that are used by the Saharawis. A small oasis and well are the camp's alternative source of water.
The Saharawis were forced to leave their territory south of Morocco in 1975 when a guerrilla campaign was started by the Saharawis' political movement - the Polisario.
Although the four refugee camps are meant to be temporary, certain buildings have a permanent feel.
The hospital is run by Doctor Ibrahim Said who was trained in Cuba. He has a long list of needs but highlights the problems facing poorly nourished children.
A small garden has been developed to produce vegetables for the refugees. Using a drip irrigation system to carefully use the most precious resource in the camp, water.
Watad runs the garden.
The Western Sahara was a Spanish administered colony since 1884. The Spaniards left in 1975 the same year the International Court of Justice recognized the Saharawis right to self determination.
But in November of 1975, under orders from Moroccan King Hassan II, over 300,000 Moroccans started to occupy the territory in a movement called the "Green March".
The Western Sahara is phosphate rich and there are thought to be oil reserves off its coast.

QUESTION: Mr. President, the Republicans in Congress are saying they can cut your budget all the way from $5 billion to $15 billion. Do you think that there is any room for substantial cuts in the budget?
THE PRESIDENT: The Congress can make a judgment on that, but I think we reduced the requests of the three services by $13 billion, and we cut out the program such as, the Skybolt, and we decided not to go ahead with the installation of Nike-Zeus, and there are many very hard decisions made in reaching the figure that we reached.
Now, this idea that there are three services and therefore you can save $3 billion by cutting $1 billion out of each and at the same time when a good many members make speeches which are very militant, which would suggest that the solution to our problems can best be obtained by war actions or warlike actions, it doesn't seem to me that we ought to be cutting our defenses at this time.
Now, in addition to that, it has been suggested that we cut school lunches, we cut aid to dependent children. I want to see these in more detail. I think we have been generalized enough. QUESTION: Mr. President, the Republicans in Congress are saying they can cut your budget all the way from $5 billion to $15 billion. Do you think that there is any room for substantial cuts in the budget?
THE PRESIDENT: The Congress can make a judgment on that, but I think we reduced the requests of the three services by $13 billion, and we cut out the program such as, the Skybolt, and we decided not to go ahead with the installation of Nike-Zeus, and there are many very hard decisions made in reaching the figure that we reached.
Now, this idea that there are three services and therefore you can save $3 billion by cutting $1 billion out of each and at the same time when a good many members make speeches which are very militant, which would suggest that the solution to our problems can best be obtained by war actions or warlike actions, it doesn't seem to me that we ought to be cutting our defenses at this time.
Now, in addition to that, it has been suggested that we cut school lunches, we cut aid to dependent children. I want to see these in more detail. I think we have been generalized enough. In good economic times or bad, the typical poor family with children is supported by only 800 hours of work during a year: That amounts to 16 hours of work per week. If work in each family were raised to 2,000 hours per year-the equivalent of one adult working 40 hours per week throughout the year- nearly 75 percent of poor children would be lifted out of official poverty.
Father absence is another major cause of child poverty. Nearly two-thirds of poor children reside in single-parent homes; each year, an additional 1.5 million children are born out of wedlock. If poor mothers married the fathers of their children, almost three-quarters would immediately be lifted out of poverty.
Each year, the U.S. imports, through both legal and illegal immigration, hundreds of thousands of additional poor persons from abroad. As a result, one-quarter of all poor persons in the U.S. are now first-generation immigrants or the minor children of those immigrants. Roughly one in ten of the persons counted among the poor by the Census Bureau is either an illegal immigrant or the minor child of an illegal.
In the late 1990s, the United States established a reasonable record in reducing child poverty. Successful anti-poverty policies were partially implemented in the welfare reform legislation of 1996, which replaced the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program with a new program called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF).
In general, children born and raised outside marriage are seven times more likely to live in poverty than are children born and raised by married couples.
"Religion has a big influence on giving patterns," said the Chronicle. "Regions of the country that are deeply religious are more generous than those that are not."

Democrats represent a majority of the wealthiest congressional districts, and half of America's richest households live in states where both senators are Democrats.

The Dajla refugee camp is in the far-western corner of Algeria.
It is home to some 50,000 Saharawis, who had to leave their territories in Western Sahara.
Their plight has now lasted 30 years
STORYLINE
It's been described by some here as one of the worst places in the world to live.
A scare and dirty supply of water, no crops, searing temperatures of 50 degrees in summer and frequent sand storms make this corner of the Sahara desert insufferable.
The Saharawis have been forced to make this land their home. They are dependent on food aid such as sugar which is flown in by the World Food Program.
Water is also flown in to the nearest airport and contained in huge containers. Dajla is thought to be the greenest of the 4 refugee camps that are used by the Saharawis. A small oasis and well are the camp's alternative source of water.
The Saharawis were forced to leave their territory south of Morocco in 1975 when a guerrilla campaign was started by the Saharawis' political movement - the Polisario.
Although the four refugee camps are meant to be temporary, certain buildings have a permanent feel.
The hospital is run by Doctor Ibrahim Said who was trained in Cuba. He has a long list of needs but highlights the problems facing poorly nourished children.
A small garden has been developed to produce vegetables for the refugees. Using a drip irrigation system to carefully use the most precious resource in the camp, water.
Watad runs the garden.
The Western Sahara was a Spanish administered colony since 1884. The Spaniards left in 1975 the same year the International Court of Justice recognized the Saharawis right to self determination.
But in November of 1975, under orders from Moroccan King Hassan II, over 300,000 Moroccans started to occupy the territory in a movement called the "Green March".
The Western Sahara is phosphate rich and there are thought to be oil reserves off its coast.

QUESTION: Mr. President, the Republicans in Congress are saying they can cut your budget all the way from $5 billion to $15 billion. Do you think that there is any room for substantial cuts in the budget?
THE PRESIDENT: The Congress can make a judgment on that, but I think we reduced the requests of the three services by $13 billion, and we cut out the program such as, the Skybolt, and we decided not to go ahead with the installation of Nike-Zeus, and there are many very hard decisions made in reaching the figure that we reached.
Now, this idea that there are three services and therefore you can save $3 billion by cutting $1 billion out of each and at the same time when a good many members make speeches which are very militant, which would suggest that the solution to our problems can best be obtained by war actions or warlike actions, it doesn't seem to me that we ought to be cutting our defenses at this time.
Now, in addition to that, it has been suggested that we cut school lunches, we cut aid to dependent children. I want to see these in more detail. I think we have been generalized enough. Are you going to cut these kinds of programs which are essential to a better life for our people? Are we going to make a determination that we are going to be permanently second-best in space? Because if you cut the space programs substantially, that is what you are writing into law, and I thought the United States made a commitment that we were not going to be second permanently. We are not going to be second in the field of national security. The fact of the matter is the Congress last year appropriated half a billion dollars more than we had requested for national security. Now they are talking about cutting it $3 billion or $5 billion.
I don't think the struggle is over, so I would be opposed to those kinds of cuts, and my judgment is that we set up a hard budget. The fact of the matter is that the non-defense and non-space expenditures were held even though in the previous years for the last ten years or so, they increased by nearly seven per cent. I think we made a hard budget. You may be able to cut some of it, but I think that I want to know where they are going to cut it and whose life is going to be adversely affected by those cuts.

In good economic times or bad, the typical poor family with children is supported by only 800 hours of work during a year: That amounts to 16 hours of work per week. If work in each family were raised to 2,000 hours per year-the equivalent of one adult working 40 hours per week throughout the year- nearly 75 percent of poor children would be lifted out of official poverty.
Father absence is another major cause of child poverty. Nearly two-thirds of poor children reside in single-parent homes; each year, an additional 1.5 million children are born out of wedlock. If poor mothers married the fathers of their children, almost three-quarters would immediately be lifted out of poverty.
Each year, the U.S. imports, through both legal and illegal immigration, hundreds of thousands of additional poor persons from abroad. As a result, one-quarter of all poor persons in the U.S. are now first-generation immigrants or the minor children of those immigrants. Roughly one in ten of the persons counted among the poor by the Census Bureau is either an illegal immigrant or the minor child of an illegal.
In the late 1990s, the United States established a reasonable record in reducing child poverty. Successful anti-poverty policies were partially implemented in the welfare reform legislation of 1996, which replaced the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program with a new program called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF).
In general, children born and raised outside marriage are seven times more likely to live in poverty than are children born and raised by married couples.
"Religion has a big influence on giving patterns," said the Chronicle. "Regions of the country that are deeply religious are more generous than those that are not."

-- In the 10 reddest states, in which Bush got more than 60 percent majorities, the average percentage of personal income donated to charity was 3.5. Residents of the bluest states, which gave Bush less than 40 percent, donated just 1.9 percent.
-- People who reject the idea that "government has a responsibility to reduce income inequality" give an average of four times more than people who accept that proposition.
Democrats represent a majority of the wealthiest congressional districts, and half of America's richest households live in states where both senators are Democrats.

Pope John Paul II nominated Mother Teresa for sainthood a year after her death. There was, in Hitchens' opinion, no reason to pay so much attention to Mother Teresa rather than to many other people working to relieve Third World misery. In a review of Hitchens' book for the London Review of Books Amit Chaudhuri noted that "If there is a slight Eurocentric quality about The Missionary Position this is because Mother Teresa and her reputation in the West, the workings of the Western media, and Mother Teresa the Roman Catholic proponent of anti-abortion dogma are central to Hitchens; Calcutta and its history and people are mentioned sympathetically, intelligently, but briefly, and remain in the background".

The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA) is a United States federal law considered to be a fundamental shift in both the method and goal of federal cash assistance to the poor. The bill added a workforce development component to welfare legislation, encouraging employment among the poor. The bill was a cornerstone of the Republican Contract with America and was introduced by Rep. E. Clay Shaw, Jr. (R-FL-22). Bill Clinton signed PRWORA into law on August 22, 1996, fulfilling his 1992 campaign promise to "end welfare as we have come to know it".[1]

Twenty years ago, with bipartisan support, President Bill Clinton signed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act that “ended welfare as we know it.” Popularly known as “welfare reform,” the controversial legislation dismantled the federal Aid to Families with Dependent Children program, which had the effect of precipitating a massive decline in families receiving cash assistance and increased the number living in poverty.
While scholars have conducted influential research on the history and outcomes of welfare reform, few are familiar with the low-income women who came together to seek a more responsive program and a better life for themselves and their children.
Marking the 20th anniversary of this consequential legislation, the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College will convene a panel documenting the struggle of women on welfare as told by representatives of two organizations that have been active since the start: Hunter College’s Welfare Rights Initiative and Community Voices Heard.

The United States Presidency of Bill Clinton, also known as the Clinton administration, was the executive branch of the federal government of the United States from January 20, 1993 to January 20, 2001. Clinton was the first Democratic president since Franklin D. Roosevelt to win two full terms. Clinton was also the first president since FDR and the last until current President Barack Obama to have not served in the military in any capacity.
The administration faced political opposition in 1994 when Republicans took control of both houses of Congress but Clinton was reelected in 1996, after a failed attempt at health care reform. The administration had a mixed record on taxes but produced the first federal budget surpluses since 1969, for fiscal years 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001,[1] leading to a decrease in the public debt (though the gross federal debt continued to increase).[2][3][4] Clinton supported the North American Free Trade Agreement, which he signed into law in 1994. His presidency saw the passage of welfare reform in Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act which ended Aid to Families with Dependent Children and reduced the number of welfare programs,[5] which received support from both political parties. He also signed the reversal of the Glass-Steagall Act which was designed to prevent financial institutions from getting too big to fail.[6] He also signed the Commodity Futures Modernization Act which legalized over-the-counter derivatives.[7]
Socially, the administration began with efforts by Clinton to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military, which culminated in a compromise known as "Don't ask, don't tell", allowing (at a statutory level) gays and lesbians to serve in the military if they did not disclose their sexual orientation (the policy was repealed in 2010). Clinton became the first President to appoint open gays to his Administration, issued executive orders ending the ban on security clearance for LGBT workers[8] and banning any job discrimination based on sexual orientation in civilian public sector employment[9] (he unsuccessfully lobbied for the private sector Employment Non-Discrimination Act), and dramatically increased federal funding for HIV/AIDS prevention, research and treatment. However Clinton also signed the Defense of Marriage Act; while it came to his desk with a veto-proof majority, Clinton's failure to veto DOMA was considered by many to be a blow to the LGBT rights movement.[10] Various measures were also introduced to improve the effectiveness of the social safety net, including an increase in the number of child care places, a significant expansion of the EITC program, and the introduction of new programs such as SCHIP and a child tax credit.

He completed his postdoc at the Maxwell School at Syracuse University, where he taught Policy and Administration in Developing Countries. Before entering academia, he consulted for the World Bank and worked for the United Nations Development Programme. Early in his career he traveled to the West Bank and Gaza, and to Algeria, on social protection projects, where he gained a firsthand understanding of the realities of foreign aid on a national scale. Having grown up on Aid to Families with Dependent Children, he personally knew there were pitfalls to the welfare system. He came to the US at the age of 10 as a Cambodian refugee via France after his mother escaped with him and his four siblings from the Khmer Rouge by posing as a Vietnamese woman. She recounted her journey to him in an article in The New York Times.

Gordon is the daughter of William and Helen Appelman Gordon and the sister of Laurence Edward Gordon and Lee David Gordon. She is the wife of Allen Hunter and they have one daughter, Rosa Gordon Hunter, of Cambridge, MA. She graduated from Swarthmore College, and from Yale University with an MA and PhD in Russian History. Her dissertation was later published as Cossack Rebellions.
She taught at the University of Massachusetts-Boston from 1968 to 1984, and at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1984 to 1999. The University of Wisconsin awarded her the university's most prestigious chair professorship, the Vilas Research Chair. Today she is University Professor of the Humanities and professor of history at New York University.[1]
Starting in the 1970s, Gordon’s research and writing examined the historical roots of contemporary social policy debates in the US, particularly as they concern gender and family issues. Her book on these topics, Woman's Body, Woman's Right (published in 1976 and reissued in 1990), remains the definitive history of birth control politics in the US. It was completely revised and re-published in 2002 as The Moral Property of Women.
In 1988 she published a historical study of how the US has dealt with family violence, including child abuse, spousal violence and sexual abuse, Heroes of Their Own Lives, which won the Joan Kelly prize of the American Historical Association.
Pitied But Not Entitled, her history of welfare, won the Berkshire Prize for best book in women's history and the Gustavus Myers Human Rights Award. Gordon was active with the failed campaign of a group of scholars of welfare protesting the repeal of Aid to Families with Dependent Children in 1996.
She served on the National Advisory Council on Violence Against Women during the Clinton administration.[2]
Changing direction in the 1990s, Gordon then began to explore narrative, story-telling history, as a way of bringing large-scale historical developments to life. Her most recent book, The Great Arizona Orphan Abduction, the story of a vigilante action against Mexican-Americans, won the Bancroft Prize for best book in American history and the Beveridge Award for best book on the history of the Western Hemisphere.
Her biography of photographer Dorothea Lange won many prizes, including: the Bancroft prize for best book in US history (making Gordon one of the very few ever to win this award twice); the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Biography; and the National Arts Club prize for best arts writing, to name a few. In his 2013 State of the Union address, Barack Obama highlighted the need to raise the federal minimum wage. The progressive economic think tank the Economic Policy Institute agrees with this position, stating: "Raising the minimum wage would help reverse the ongoing erosion of wages that has contributed significantly to growing income inequality." In response to the fast-food worker strikes of 2013, Labor Secretary Thomas Perez said that it was another sign of the need to raise the minimum wage for all workers: "It's important to hear that voice... For all too many people working minimum wage jobs, the rungs on the ladder of opportunity are feeling further and further apart."
Amalgamated Transit Union international president Lawrence J. Hanley has called for a maximum wage law, which "would limit the amount of compensation an employer could receive to a specified multiple of the wage earned by his or her lowest paid employees."
Ralph Nader and the United Front Against Austerity, among others, call for a financial transactions tax (also known as the Robin Hood tax) to bolster the social safety net and the public sector.
Economist Richard D. Wolff claims that greater economic equality could be achieved by extending democracy into the economic sphere.
Others argue for a Basic income guarantee, ranging from libertarians such as Milton Friedman (in the form of negative income tax), Robert Anton Wilson, Gary Johnson (In the form of the fair tax "prebate") and Charles Murray to the Green Party.

Paul Robin Krugman (born February 28, 1953) is an American economist, Professor of Economics and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, Centenary Professor at the London School of Economics, and an op-ed columnist for The New York Times. In 2008, Krugman won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his contributions to New Trade Theory and New Economic Geography. According to the prize Committee, the prize was given for Krugman's work explaining the patterns of international trade and the geographic concentration of wealth, by examining the effects of economies of scale and of consumer preferences for diverse goods and services.
Krugman is known in academia for his work on international economics (including trade theory, economic geography, and international finance), liquidity traps, and currency crises. Krugman is ranked among the most influential academic thinkers in the US.
As of 2008, Krugman has written 20 books and has published over 200 scholarly articles in professional journals and edited volumes. He has also written more than 750 columns on economic and political issues for The New York Times, Fortune and Slate.
As a commentator, Krugman has written on a wide range of economic issues including income distribution, taxation, macroeconomics and international economics. According to the prize Committee, the prize was given for Krugman's work explaining the patterns of international trade and the geographic concentration of wealth, by examining the effects of economies of scale and of consumer preferences for diverse goods and services.
Krugman is known in academia for his work on international economics (including trade theory, economic geography, and international finance), liquidity traps, and currency crises. Krugman is ranked among the most influential academic thinkers in the US.
As of 2008, Krugman has written 20 books and has published over 200 scholarly articles in professional journals and edited volumes. He has also written more than 750 columns on economic and political issues for The New York Times, Fortune and Slate.
As a commentator, Krugman has written on a wide range of economic issues including income distribution, taxation, macroeconomics and international economics. Krugman considers himself a liberal, calling one of his books and his New York Times blog The Conscience of a Liberal. His popular commentary has attracted considerable comment, both positive and negative.

Left-wing British journalist Tariq Ali served as co-producer. The bill added a workforce development component to welfare legislation, encouraging employment among the poor.
