Adrian Bayley sentence reduced

Convicted murderer Adrian Bayley has a shock win in court with one of his rape convictions quashed.

The 46-year-old has spent much of the past five years in protective custody because of concerns he would be targeted by other inmates.

He is serving life in prison for the 2012 rape and murder of Ms Meagher and raping two other women. He will be eligible for parole in 2055, when he is 83.

Bayley is believed to have been in the Hoya unit, a protection unit for prisoners at high risk of being attacked, when he was set upon.

Bayley is particularly loathed by his fellow prisoners because his crimes sparked a toughening of the parole regime.

His injuries were treated within the prison.

A Corrections Victoria spokeswoman said there had been a minor incident at Barwon on Thursday afternoon.

"The prisoner was assessed and treated at the prison, but did not require hospitalisation or any ongoing treatment.

"Police were notified and will investigate."

Child killer Arthur Freeman, who threw his daughter Darcey to her death from the West Gate Bridge, was also in the Hoya unit when he reportedly started a wild brawl in 2011 because of taunting from other inmates.

The rape and murder of Ms Meagher shocked and angered Victoria, and was the catalyst for an overhaul of parole.

Last year, Bayley had his sentence cut by three years by the Court of Appeal, which upheld his appeal against a conviction for raping a sex worker in 2000.

Despite cutting Bayley's sentence, Court of Appeal Justices Marilyn Warren, Mark Weinberg and Phillip Priest noted the extent of his depravity.

"[Bayley's] offending was utterly abhorrent," they said in re-sentencing.

"It was not, however, atypical so far as he was concerned. Over many years, the applicant has shown a depraved predilection to attack, degrade and humiliate women.

"As his criminal history amply demonstrates, his base inclinations have not, in the past, been curbed by substantial periods of imprisonment."

Bayley has rape convictions from 1990 and was on parole when he murdered Ms Meagher, having been jailed in 2001 for raping five women.

Coroner Ian Gray found last year that Bayley should not have been on parole in 2012 and that Ms Meagher's murder was "preventable".
