Created in 1959, "Paths of Steel" shows United States Steel and its operations in Pittsburgh at the height of the company's dominance of the steel industry. The movie looks at some of the research being applied to create innovation in the materials industry through alloys, heat treatment, and forging or rolling. The film was directed by James Petrie, a cameraman, editor, and director who made training and motivational films with Louis de Rochemont and via Potter, Orchard & Petrie, whose slogan was "The Precise Purpose Movie."

The company was the world's 13th largest steel producer in 2010. Steel to shareholders. The Supreme Court blocked the takeover by ruling that the president did not have the constitutional authority to seize the mills.

Produced in 1938 by United States Steel, "Steel: Man's Servant" presents a lavish Technicolor look at the steel industry prior to WWII. Narrated by Edwin Hill and directed by Roland Reed, with amusical score by Robert Armbruster, the 37-minute film typically accompanied a dramatic feature film in release. The film presents mining activities on the Mesabi Range, with an Oliver Iron Mining Co. steam shovel ripping iron ore from the ground at the film's start. The film goes on to show the path of iron ore to Duluth's docks and steel plant before most of it arrived in the mills and manufacturing facilities of the eastern United States. The movie contains rare color images of pre-WWII American including open pit and underground mines, steel mills, blast furnaces, Great Lakes ore carriers, steam locomotives, steel bridges, skyscrapers, highways, ships, oil derricks, stainless steel pots and pans, and more.

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. It is produced in a two-stage process. First, iron ore is reduced or smelted with coke and limestone in a blast furnace, producing molten iron which is either cast into pig iron or carried to the next stage as molten iron. In the second stage, known as steelmaking, impurities such as sulfur, phosphorus, and excess carbon are removed and alloying elements such as manganese, nickel, chromium and vanadium are added to produce the exact steel required. While based in London during World War II, Hicks recorded an on-the-scene report of the Normandy landings from the USS Ancon. It was broadcast on the night of June 6, 1944 over the American networks via a pool feed. During the broadcast there were sounds of heavy bombardment. His voice was described as "modest" and "incapable of false drama" and was considered particularly well suited for covering the landings. The New York World-Telegram called his broadcast "The greatest recording yet to come out of the war..."

Facts:
Workers at the United Steel Corporation brought a class action suit against the company arguing that the Fair Labor Standards Act required the company to compensate them for time spent changing into and out of work clothes and the transit time from the locker room to their work stations. The Act states that an employer does not need to compensate employees for time spent "changing clothes." United States Steel Corporation moved for summary judgment. The district court granted the motion as it relates to compensation for changing clothes but not in relation to compensation for transit time.
The company appealed, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit held that Act did not require the company to compensate the employees for either the time spent changing or the time spent in transit between the locker room and the work stations.
Question:
Does changing into required safety gear constitute "changing clothes" under the Fair Labor Standards Act?
Conclusion:
Yes. Justice Antonin Scalia delivered the opinion of the 9-0 majority. The Court held that safety gear falls within the parameters of "clothes" for the purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act and therefore is subject to the separate collective bargaining agreement that does not provide compensation for changing into and out of safety gear. Because the statutory context makes it clear that the concept of "clothes" refers to items that are necessary for job performance, there is no need to construe the term more strictly. Additionally, since "changing" clothes does not require the substitution of one outfit for another, the act of donning or doffing safety can be considered "changing clothes" for the purposes of the Act.

John P. Surma was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1954. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.
Mr. Surma joined Price Waterhouse LLP in 1976, and in 1981 he served in the Manchester, England, office of the Price Waterhouse United Kingdom firm. In 1987, he was admitted to the partnership.
In 1983, Mr. Surma participated in the President's Executive Exchange Program in Washington, D.C., where he served as executive staff assistant to the vice chairman of the Federal Reserve Board.
In 1997, Mr. Surma joined Marathon Oil Company as senior vice president, finance & accounting. He was appointed president, Speedway SuperAmerica LLC in 1998, and senior vice president, supply & transportation for Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC (MAP) in 2000. He was named president of MAP on January 1, 2001.
Effective with the separation from USX Corporation, he became vice chairman and chief financial officer of United States Steel Corporation on January 1, 2002. He was named president in March 2003, and president and chief operating officer in June 2003. He was elected president and chief executive office in 2004, and chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer in February 2006.
Mr. Surma is a member of the board of directors of Marathon Petroleum Corporation, Ingersoll Rand and the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. He was appointed by President Barack Obama to the president's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations and currently serves as vice chairman. He serves on the board of directors of the World Steel Association, the American Iron and Steel Institute and the National Safety Council. Additionally, he is a member of the board of directors and executive committee of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.

Steel
Steels are alloys of iron and other elements, primarily carbon, widely used in construction and other applications because of their high tensile strengths and low costs. Carbon, other elements, and inclusions within iron act as hardening agents that prevent the movement of dislocations that otherwise occur in the crystal lattices of iron atoms.
The carbon in typical steel alloys may contribute up to 2.1% of its weight. Varying the amount of alloying elements, their formation in the steel either as solute elements, or as precipitated phases, retards the movement of those dislocations that make iron comparatively ductile and weak, and thus controls qualities such as the hardness, ductility, and tensile strength of the resulting steel. Although steel had been produced in bloomery furnaces for thousands of years, steel's use expanded extensively after more efficient production methods were devised in the 17th century for blister steel and then crucible steel. With the invention of the Bessemer process in the mid-19th century, a new era of mass-produced steel began. This was followed by Siemens-Martin process and then Gilchrist-Thomas process that refined the quality of steel. With their introductions, mild steel replaced wrought iron.

Facts: Workers at the United Steel Corporation brought a class action suit against the company arguing that the Fair Labor Standards Act required the company to compensate them for time spent changing into and out of work clothes and the transit time from the locker room to their work stations. The Act states that an employer does not need to compensate employees for time spent "changing clothes." United States Steel Corporation moved for summary judgment. The district court granted the motion as it relates to compensation for changing clothes but not in relation to compensation for transit time. The company appealed, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit held that Act did not require the company to compensate the employees for either the time spent changing or the time spent in transit between the locker room and the work stations. Question: Does changing into required safety gear constitute "changing clothes" under the Fair Labor Standards Act? Conclusion: Yes. Justice Antonin Scalia delivered the opinion of the 9-0 majority. The Court held that safety gear falls within the parameters of "clothes" for the purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act and therefore is subject to the separate collective bargaining agreement that does not provide compensation for changing into and out of safety gear. Because the statutory context makes it clear that the concept of "clothes" refers to items that are necessary for job performance, there is no need to construe the term more strictly. Additionally, since "changing" clothes does not require the substitution of one outfit for another, the act of donning or doffing safety can be considered "changing clothes" for the purposes of the Act. In 1997, Mr. Surma joined Marathon Oil Company as senior vice president, finance & accounting. He was named president of MAP on January 1, 2001. Effective with the separation from USX Corporation, he became vice chairman and chief financial officer of United States Steel Corporation on January 1, 2002. He was named president in March 2003, and president and chief operating officer in June 2003. He was elected president and chief executive office in 2004, and chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer in February 2006. Yes. Justice Antonin Scalia delivered the opinion of the 9-0 majority. The Court held that safety gear falls within the parameters of "clothes" for the purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act and therefore is subject to the separate collective bargaining agreement that does not provide compensation for changing into and out of safety gear. Because the statutory context makes it clear that the concept of "clothes" refers to items that are necessary for job performance, there is no need to construe the term more strictly. Additionally, since "changing" clothes does not require the substitution of one outfit for another, the act of donning or doffing safety can be considered "changing clothes" for the purposes of the Act.

He serves on the board of directors of the World Steel Association, the American Iron and Steel Institute and the National Safety Council. The Mirage Hotel boasts an erupting volcano and cascading waterfalls.

Over the next generation, this partnership assumed the leading role in financing America's railroads and stabilizing and revitalizing Wall Street's chaotic securities markets. The firm created a national capital market for industrial companies— a market that had previously existed only for railroads and canals. To restore investor confidence, Drexel Morgan underwrote the pay of the entire U.S. Army when Congress refused to do so in 1877, bailed out the U.S.Government during the Panic of 1895 and rescued the New York Stock Exchange during the Panic of 1907.[4] With the formation of Drexel, Morgan & Co., Drexel Harjes became the French affiliate of an international banking firm with offices in London, Philadelphia, New York City and Paris that would subsequently become J.P. Morgan & Co..
Two years after Drexel's death in 1893, Drexel, Morgan & Co. was renamed J.P. Morgan & Co., one of the original predecessors of what is today JPMorgan Chase. Drexel died of a heart attack on June 30, 1893 in Karlsbad (in the German-speaking part of Bohemia, Austrian Empire), today Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, at the age of 66, and was buried in Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia.

In the book The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, author Jeff Sharlet examines the power wielded by a secretive Christian group known as the Family, or the Fellowship.
Founded in 1935 in opposition to FDR's New Deal, the evangelical group's views on religion and politics are so singular that some other Christian-right organizations consider them heretical
The group also has a connection to a house in Washington, D.C., known as C Street. Owned by a foundation affiliated with the Family, C Street is officially registered as a church; in practice, it serves as a meeting place and residence for politicians like South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, Nevada Sen. John Ensign and Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn.
The Family, Sharlet writes, is responsible for founding the annual National Prayer Breakfast, a supposedly ecumenical — but implicitly Christian — event attended by the president, members of Congress and dignitaries from around the world. These foreign delegations are often led by top defense personnel, who use it as an opportunity to lobby the most influential people in Washington — and who repay the Family with access to their governments.
The group's approach to religion, Sharlet says, is based on "a sort of trickle-down fundamentalism," which holds that the wealthy and powerful, if they "can get their hearts right with God ... will dispense blessings to those underneath them."
Members of the group ardently support free markets, in which, they believe, God's will operates directly through Adam Smith's "invisible hand."
The Family was founded in 1935 by a minister named Abraham Vereide after, he claimed, he had a vision in which God came to him in the person of the head of the United States Steel Corporation.
The current leader, Doug Coe, shuns publicity but wields considerable political influence as a spiritual adviser. Sharlet says that when Sanford recently compared his struggles to those of the biblical King David — a central figure in Family theology — the author "could almost hear Doug Coe's voice" coming out of the South Carolina governor. In the book The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, author Jeff Sharlet examines the power wielded by a secretive Christian group known as the Family, or the Fellowship.
Founded in 1935 in opposition to FDR's New Deal, the evangelical group's views on religion and politics are so singular that some other Christian-right organizations consider them heretical
The group also has a connection to a house in Washington, D.C., known as C Street. Owned by a foundation affiliated with the Family, C Street is officially registered as a church; in practice, it serves as a meeting place and residence for politicians like South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, Nevada Sen. John Ensign and Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn.
The Family, Sharlet writes, is responsible for founding the annual National Prayer Breakfast, a supposedly ecumenical — but implicitly Christian — event attended by the president, members of Congress and dignitaries from around the world. These foreign delegations are often led by top defense personnel, who use it as an opportunity to lobby the most influential people in Washington — and who repay the Family with access to their governments.
The group's approach to religion, Sharlet says, is based on "a sort of trickle-down fundamentalism," which holds that the wealthy and powerful, if they "can get their hearts right with God ... will dispense blessings to those underneath them."
Members of the group ardently support free markets, in which, they believe, God's will operates directly through Adam Smith's "invisible hand."
The Family was founded in 1935 by a minister named Abraham Vereide after, he claimed, he had a vision in which God came to him in the person of the head of the United States Steel Corporation.
The current leader, Doug Coe, shuns publicity but wields considerable political influence as a spiritual adviser. Sharlet says that when Sanford recently compared his struggles to those of the biblical King David — a central figure in Family theology — the author "could almost hear Doug Coe's voice" coming out of the South Carolina governor.
