In the United States, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awards certification based on the number of albums and singles sold through retail and other ancillary markets. Other countries have similar awards (see music recording sales certification). Certification is not automatic; for an award to be made, the record label must request certification. The audit is conducted against net shipments after returns (most often an artist's royalty statement is used), which includes albums sold directly to retailers and one-stops, direct-to-consumer sales (music clubs and mail order) and other outlets.
Presently, an American RIAA-certified Gold record is a single or album that has sold 500,000 units (records, tapes or compact discs). Originally, the requirement for a Gold single was one million units sold and a Gold album represented $1 million in sales (at wholesale value). In 1975, the additional requirement of 500,000 units sold was added for Gold albums. Reflecting growth in record sales, the Platinum award was instituted in 1976 for albums selling one million units and singles selling two million units. The Multi-Platinum award was instituted in 1984, signifying multiple Platinum levels of albums and singles. In 1989, the sales thresholds for singles were reduced to 500,000 for Gold and 1,000,000 for Platinum, reflecting a decrease in sales of singles. In 1992, RIAA began counting each disc in a multi-disc set as one unit toward certification. Reflecting additional growth in music sales, the Diamond award was instituted in 1999 for albums or singles selling ten million units. Because of these changes in criteria, the sales level associated with a particular award depends on when the award was made.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that represents the recording industry in the United States. Its members consist of record labels and distributors, which the RIAA says "create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 85% of all legally sold recorded music in the United States." The RIAA headquarters is in Washington, D.C.
The RIAA was formed in 1952. Its original mission was to administer recording copyright fees and problems, work with trade unions, and do research relating to the record industry and government regulations. Early RIAA standards included the RIAA equalization curve, the format of the stereophonic record groove and the dimensions of 33 1/3 rpm, 45 rpm, and 78 rpm records.
The RIAA says its current mission includes the following:

Platinum is a chemical element with symbol Pt and atomic number 78. It is a dense, malleable, ductile, highly unreactive, precious, gray-white transition metal. Its name is derived from the Spanish term platina, which is literally translated into "little silver".
Platinum is a member of the platinum group of elements and group 10 of the periodic table of elements. It has six naturally occurring isotopes. It is one of the rarer elements in Earth's crust with an average abundance of approximately 5 μg/kg. It occurs in some nickel and copper ores along with some native deposits, mostly in South Africa, which accounts for 80% of the world production. Because of its scarcity in Earth's crust, only a few hundred tonnes are produced annually, and given its important uses, it is highly valuable and is a major precious metal commodity.
Platinum is the least reactive metal. It has remarkable resistance to corrosion, even at high temperatures, and is therefore considered a noble metal. Consequently, platinum is often found chemically uncombined as native platinum. Because it occurs naturally in the alluvial sands of various rivers, it was first used by pre-Columbian South American natives to produce artifacts. It was referenced in European writings as early as 16th century, but it was not until Antonio de Ulloa published a report on a new metal of Colombian origin in 1748 that it became investigated by scientists.
Platinum & Gold is a 2010 compilation album by the Swedish group Ace of Base, released in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.

The RIAA announced a major game-changer today that will have an immediate impact on the industry. In a statement from CEO and Chairman Cary Sherman, the RIAA revealed they will now factor audio and video streams into gold and platinum album certifications. Basically, this means that streams will now be counted for the first time when determining if an album is gold or platinum status. Because of the change, 17 projects reached a new milestone today, including Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly and Big Sean's Dark Sky Paradise both hitting platinum status. "We know that music listening – for both for albums and songs – is skyrocketing, yet that trend has not been reflected in our album certifications," Sherman said in a statement. "Modernizing our Album Award to include music streaming i...

no one in the music industry should go home empty handed.
After the summer of 2003, on the strength of "Right Thurr" and "Holidae In," Chingy 's "Jackpot" went triple platinum. And as if karma had some specific vendetta against hip-hop, only a dozen or so rappers have gone even 1x platinum in the decade since. You know what's cooler than a platinum certification, though? A diamond certification. Outkast, MC Hammer, 2Pac, Eminem, and the Notorious B.I.G. are the only rappers to have ever gone diamond, with a total of seven albums. http://www.complex.com/music/2014/10/ranking-the-7-diamond-selling-rap-albums/ http://www.wochit.com
Rihanna released her much-delayed, yet long-awaited eighth studio album, ANTI, abruptly this past Thursday. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the album platinum in a mere 15 hours. The pop star released the album through Jay Z's Tidal streaming service (to which she also serves as "co-owner") and was reportedly downloaded and/or bought 1.4 million times. Tidal's director of marketing, Grace Kim, confirmed that the rumor of them accidentally leaking the album was true but it obviously did more good than harm. Here’s what she said to SPIN: When we started this campaign, we expected this to take a week,That’s a really big deal for us...There were conversations [with Billboard] early on when this promotion and partnership started, but ultimately it became a...
Don welcomed Johnny Drille, Poe, and DNA to Mavin Dynasty while Ayo Jay's hit song 'Your Number' gets RIAA gold certified. Ayo Jay's 2014 single ''Your number', released in 2014 has hit the gold status certification according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In America, an artist's single gets certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America when it sells 500,000 copies. Starting May 9, 2013 RIAA certifications for singles in the "digital" category include on-demand audio and/or video song streams in addition to downloads at a rate of 100 streams=1 certification "unit". Ayo Jay's 'Your number' obviously has passed these requirements, and doesn't come as a surprise given the viral growth of the track and the attraction it got from the likes of Chri...
In the 1940s there were as many as 100 different turntable EQs for records. So in 1954 the RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America established an EQ for records so that all disc recordings would be standardized. This EQ added hi-frequency pre-emphasis to minimize the surface noise, in the same way that the NAB EQ helps minimize tape hiss. However, since music today is mixed with much more hi-frequency content than in 1954, care needs to be taken to assure that sibilance distortion doesn't occur, due to this hi-frequency premphasis. In addition, the RIAA EQ adds a 6 dB per octave hi-pass roll off starting at 1 kHz, so that the signal at 20 Hz is reduced by 20 dB. This permits narrower grooves, allowing more time to be recorded on the disc. Without this low-end roll off, ...
