A fountain pen is a nib pen that, unlike its predecessor, the dip pen, contains an internal reservoir of liquid ink. The pen draws ink from the reservoir through a feed to the nib and deposits it on paper via a combination of gravity and capillary action.
Filling the reservoir with ink may be achieved manually (via the use of a Pasteur pipette or syringe) or via an internal filling mechanism which creates suction (for example, through a piston mechanism) to transfer ink directly through the nib into the reservoir. Some pens employ removable reservoirs in the form of pre-filled ink cartridges. A fountain pen needs little or no pressure on the nib to write. World Fountain Pen Day is celebrated on the first Friday of November every year by the lovers of fountain pens.
The earliest historical record of a reservoir pen dates to the 10th century. In 973, Ma'ād al-Mu'izz, the caliph of the Maghreb, demanded a pen that would not stain his hands or clothes, and was provided with a pen that held ink in a reservoir and delivered it to the nib, which could be held upside-down without leaking, as recorded in Kitab al-Majalis wa 'l-musayarat, by Qadi al-Nu'man al-Tamimi (d. 974). No details of the construction or mechanism of operation of this pen are known, and no examples have survived.
A fountain (from the Latin "fons" (genitive "fontis"), a source or spring) is a piece of architecture which pours water into a basin or jets it into the air to supply drinking water and/or for a decorative or dramatic effect.
Fountains were originally purely functional, connected to springs or aqueducts and used to provide drinking water and water for bathing and washing to the residents of cities, towns and villages. Until the late 19th century most fountains operated by gravity, and needed a source of water higher than the fountain, such as a reservoir or aqueduct, to make the water flow or jet into the air.
In addition to providing drinking water, fountains were used for decoration and to celebrate their builders. Roman fountains were decorated with bronze or stone masks of animals or heroes. In the Middle Ages, Moorish and Muslim garden designers used fountains to create miniature versions of the gardens of paradise. King Louis XIV of France used fountains in the Gardens of Versailles to illustrate his power over nature. The baroque decorative fountains of Rome in the 17th and 18th centuries marked the arrival point of restored Roman aqueducts and glorified the Popes who built them.

Custom Namiki Falcon Resin Fountain Pen modified by John Mottishaw. He ground the nib (14k) extra fine and added flex to it (Spencerian customization). The nib requires medium pressure. The ink is Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo Night Sky (Greenish Deep Blue) which shades wonderfully on Bristol Board. This pen is difficult to use properly. Most fountain pens are not designed to achieve the line variation seen here. I purchased my pen here: http://www.nibs.com/NamikiFalconPage.htm Do not redistribute without permission please.
How to behave properly in the company of a fine writing instrument! In reality, it ended up being more of a how to open, close & hold the pen than anything else! I'll get around to a _real_ 'writing with' video as soon as I can! Part 2 ended up bad due to 2 cameras recording at different frame rates... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=II_1mtV7v2Q pat :)
Nakaya Naka-ai Tame-Sukashi Cat Fountain Pen Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo Ink Fine cursive italic nib custom ground by John Mottishaw Paper: Bristol board, Leuchiturm 1917 dot grid This pen can be found at the following address: http://www.nibs.com/Nakaya-Naka-ai-Ma... Please note: While the pen appears black, it is actually a deep red. It is impossible to appreciate the fantastic lacquer work this pen has without seeing it in person. Despite it being the most beautiful aspect of this pen, I could not represent it accurately with my DSC-HX9V camera, and so chose not to focus on it.
