Volvo is set to undercut its key rivals with its newest mid-size SUV.
The Swedish automaker's new XC60 range kicks off at $59,990 before on-road costs, which is quite a bit cheaper than the point of entry into the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC ranges.
Volvo has split the XC60 range into three model grades; Momentum, Inscription and R-Design.
The base Momentum grade is made up of two variants, the entry-level D4 which is powered by a 140kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine and the T5 variant which is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit that produces 187kW and 350Nm and is priced from $62,990.
The mid-level Inscription similarly consists of two variants - D4 and T5 - which share the same engines as the Momentum grade and are priced from $66,990 and $69,990 respectively.
The range-topping R-design variants gain more powerful engines with the $73,990 D5 R-Design scoring a 173kW/480Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel and the $76,990 T6 variant is powered by 235kW/400Nm supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine found in the brand's Polestar performance models.
The range is capped off with the $92,990 plug-in hybrid T8 variant which utilises a hybridised version of the T6's 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine coupled with a lithium-ion battery and rear-mounted 65kW electric motor to produce a healthy 300kW and 640Nm. Volvo claims the T8 can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.3 seconds.
The XC60 is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels.
All models will be compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as hosting new safety systems that better utilise semi-autonomous technology to help steer the vehicle out of potentially dangerous situations. The steer assist system has been added to Volvo's autonomous emergency brake system, blind spot monitoring and a new head-on collision avoidance system that effectively is the same as lane keep assist in that it helps steer the vehicle back into its lane if it wanders into another lane.
Volvo's semi autonomous driving technology that steers, accelerates and brakes at speeds up to 130km/h is also available on the new XC60.
Exact details of equipment in each model grade won't be known until closer to the XC60's local launch date in October, 2017.

The Japanese SUV market is circa $30K, so why would you pay double for a car that is expensive to maintain?

I can understand Volvo Australia asking 20% more than the Korean equivalent, but almost double? Shame, because if Volvo pricing were more reasonable I'd seriously consider them.

What Japanese SUV of equivalent spec and premium components costs circa $30k? The upfront cost is not the biggest issue with Volvo, its aftersales. Its all in how its sold. Throw in the service plan on the price...finance is usually over 5 years. 5 year finance, 5 year warranty, 5 year service plan.

Which spec, as the volvo is $59990 - $92990 + ORC?
Driver777 | 2017-08-30 04:31:28
Point is that a RAV4, CR-V, Forester, CX-5 or Xtrail in their $30k cost category is hardly any match for the Volvo's XC60. So your first comment makes no sense to me.

The XC-60 has three variants ...momentum, inscription and r design, only the momentum is $60K+ORC, please explain ? I'm sure you can get a specced up forester that is equivalent.

Driver, maybe not at $30k, but by $35k you are starting to get some decent models. At $50k you can get a Subaru XT premium. And you still haven't even cracked the cheapest Volvo. Although my experience with Volvo parts is they are pretty cheap on older models. I know because they sometimes sub for Mercedes parts, but at 1/3 the price.
