Wheat (Triticum spp.) is a cereal grain, originally from the Levant region of the Near East but now cultivated worldwide. In 2013, world production of wheat was 713 million tons, making it the third most-produced cereal after maize (1,016 million tons) and rice (745 million tons). Wheat was the second most-produced cereal in 2009; world production in that year was 682 million tons, after maize (817 million tons), and with rice as a close third (679 million tons).
This grain is grown on more land area than any other commercial food. World trade in wheat is greater than for all other crops combined. Globally, wheat is the leading source of vegetable protein in human food, having a higher protein content than other major cereals, maize (corn) or rice. In terms of total production tonnages used for food, it is currently second to rice as the main human food crop and ahead of maize, after allowing for maize's more extensive use in animal feeds. The archaeological record suggests that this first occurred in the regions known as the Fertile Crescent.
Deere & Company (brand name John Deere) is an American corporation that manufactures agricultural, construction, and forestry machinery, diesel engines, drivetrains (axles, transmissions, gearboxes) used in heavy equipment, and lawn care equipment. I grow my own wheat and make bread not because its 10% cheaper but because I think its 100% better - and it gives me great satisfaction. Growing wheat this way is an indulgence as it requires a certain amount of land, if space is tight growing vegetables and salad crops makes more sense. Video of wheat being chopped for silage at a Dairy Farm near Berne Indiana. The video has several different pieces of farm machinery in it and three different custom farming crews getting the work done. Wheat was mowed down and raked by Muhlenkamp Custom Operations from Portland Indiana . Chopping was done by J-MAR Farms from Piqua Ohio and the silage bagging was done by Rediger Farms Inc. out of Geneva Indiana. In this video the wheat is cut down and chopped into silage just before the plant comes into head. Then it is stored in plastic silage blades where it will ferment and be stored for use at a later date for the dairy herd at this farm.
