A two-year-old boy has died after his neck accidentally became stuck in the window of a car.

Logan Vanderkleed, of Indiana, sustained extensive brain damage in the tragic accident before dying in his mother's arms a week later.

In a post to the Facebook page Love for Logan, Logan's mother Lisa Vanderkleed explained that Logan's father, Drew, was nearby at the time, and his sister, Kendra, was also in the car.

"My hubby and his dad work on a family farm so they take the kids to work with them during the day," she wrote. "During nap time, my hubby and his dad were cleaning a vehicle out right next to our vehicle that the kids were in, so since they could see the kids in the car right there and it was super hot outside, they left the kids in the car with the air running and windows up."

Upon waking, Ms Vanderkleed believes her son must have put the car window down in search of his dad, somehow "rolling it up on himself".

"The window button on the explorer is a toggle switch so left and right makes it go up and down," she wrote, " which is unlike our other car window in which you actually have to pull up on the lever to move the window. "

The Vanderkleeds think Logan's knee or foot may have hit the button on the door,  " and he freaked out and couldn't reach it or figure out how to unroll it."

Mr Vanderkleed had reportedly checked on the children continually as he worked.  "They were fine until the last time when my husband turned and saw our son with his head stuck in the almost completely rolled-up window," Ms Vanderkleed wrote. "Even with them right there, accidents happen quickly."

Speaking to local news WHTR, Mr Vanderkleed said that he and his father tried desperately to revive Logan. "When dad and I saw him and got to him, we both said he's gone and then I said, 'Get him over here on the ground and start CPR.' I told him how to do it. I said, 'Start pumping his chest,' and called 911. We had to try."

Fighting for life and unable to breathe on his own, Logan was taken to Riley Children's Hospital. According to a Go Fund Me page, set up on behalf of the family, the little boy "was non-responsive to numerous testing, was showing low levels of brain function, and his body was undergoing convulsions/shaking. Doctors were not optimistic based on their results and the time-frame they believed Logan had been without a pulse."

By the following morning, Logan's prognosis was even poorer. "The medical team believed Logan had been without oxygen longer than originally thought, and the damage done to his brain to be extensive and the worse case they had ever seen. They encouraged the family to say their good-byes."

The couple chose to have Logan's breathing tube removed so they could donate some of his organs.

On August 24, Ms Vanderkleed wrote that Logan's father had been cradling their little boy when she "felt a strong urge" to hold him herself.

"He just wanted his mummy," she said. "Moments after I got him, he took his last breath. At 1:07 a.m., Logan went to be with the Lord. We are comforted knowing he is the best place possible. It will be hard for sure though... Thank you for your prayers and please continue to pray for all of us, especially his sister Kendra. You all say I'm strong, but you are all the strong ones."
