We were so excited be dwarfed by the 3,000 quartz pillars of Zhangjiajie and it did not disappoint! Touted as the inspiration for James Cameron's Avatar home world (that movie with the sexy smurfs and therefore these mountains are also called the "Avatar Mountains") it was other-worldly and inspiring once you got passed the crowds and camera flashes... which was hard to do.

Location: Zhangjiajie is located in the west of Hunnan Province, 330 kilometers from Changsha, the capital of Hunnan Province, over 1,000 kilometers from both Shanghai and Beijing.
Zhangjiajie was thrust into foreigner travelers' eyes after the movie Avatar. The Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar were inspired by Heavenly Pillar in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
Zhangjiajie is famous for its precarious peaks, limpid streams, dense forests, and large karst caves. In 1982, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park became China's first national forest park.
The two must-see attractions in Zhangjiajie are the National Park and Tianmen Mountain.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, part of Wulingyuan Scenic Area, is large and needs at least two days to explore. The tour involves a lot of walking and climbing.
Less popular and less crowded than the forest Park, Tianmen Mountain is well worth a trip. The scenery is quite different from the national park, featuring mountain peak vistas, cliff path walking, and a cable car with fantastic views. It is a much easier trip than the forest park, with far less walking.

China from a Vantage Point: Glass Skywalk in the Tianmen Mountain.
The glass skywalk in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in the Tianmen Mountain, China, seems especially built for the fearless. But walking on this incredible pathway, suspended 1,430 meters high up in the air (about 4 691.6 feet) is also 6,35 centimeters thick (2.5 inches), making it safe for the avalanche of tourists. The skywalk is situated 4,700ft above sea level on the side of the Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, China.
The 200ft long bridge joins the west cliff at the Yunmeng Fairy Summit, the summit of Tianmen Mountain and Zhang Jiajie.
And it would appear to be too scary for the cleaners - tourists are asked to put on shoe covers before passing to help keep the path clean.
The pathway, built earlier in the summer echoes the glass-bottomed walkway at the Grand Canyon in the U.S.
The 70ft bridge is 4,000ft above the natural wonder and allows tourists to look through 2.5in of crystal-clear glass to the Canyon floor below.
The Tianmen mountain, literally translated as Heavenly Gate Mountain is so called because of a huge natural cave that occurs halfway up to the summit.

I always thought Mount Huangshan is the greatest mountain in China until I explored Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Wulingyuan Scenic Area. They are so unique and beautiful that made them the second best for any hikers in the world. These scenic mountains were also the inspiration for the 2009 film "AVATAR". The incredible and most memorable experience there was when watching the morning mist & fog moved slowly while re-sharping the contour of these stunning karst pillars made of sandstone and covered with sub-tropical rainforest. It will transport you to heaven and bring you back again to reality. In Mt Huangshan, I had this experience before but at Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the experience was even more intense and heavenly. It was what I called the "AVATAR" experience.
3D2N ZHANGJIAJIE & MOUNT TIANMEN TOUR ITINERARY:
DAY 1
Pick up from Zhangjiajie Airport or train station or bus station

Zhangjiajie (simplified Chinese: 张家界; traditional Chinese: 張家界; pinyin: Zhāngjiājiè) is a prefecture-level city in the northwestern part of Hunan province in China. Glass skywalk in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in the Tianmen Mountain, China
China from a Vantage Point: Glass Skywalk in the Tianmen Mountain. The glass skywalk in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in the Tianmen Mountain, China, seems especially built for the fearless. But walking on this incredible pathway, suspended 1,430 meters high up in the air (about 4 691.6 feet) is also 6,35 centimeters thick (2.5 inches), making it safe for the avalanche of tourists. The skywalk is situated 4,700ft above sea level on the side of the Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, China. The 200ft long bridge joins the west cliff at the Yunmeng Fairy Summit, the summit of Tianmen Mountain and Zhang Jiajie. I always thought Mount Huangshan is the greatest mountain in China until I explored Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Wulingyuan Scenic Area. They are so unique and beautiful that made them the second best for any hikers in the world. These scenic mountains were also the inspiration for the 2009 film "AVATAR". The incredible and most memorable experience there was when watching the morning mist & fog moved slowly while re-sharping the contour of these stunning karst pillars made of sandstone and covered with sub-tropical rainforest. It will transport you to heaven and bring you back again to reality. The two must-see attractions in Zhangjiajie are the National Park and Tianmen Mountain.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, part of Wulingyuan Scenic Area, is large and needs at least two days to explore. The tour involves a lot of walking and climbing.
Less popular and less crowded than the forest Park, Tianmen Mountain is well worth a trip. The scenery is quite different from the national park, featuring mountain peak vistas, cliff path walking, and a cable car with fantastic views. It is a much easier trip than the forest park, with far less walking.

The Bailong Elevator to The Top - Zhangjiajie National Park, China
http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Travels With Sheila thought Tony (guide) was kidding when he said we were going to take a shuttle bus to the Bailong Elevator. What the....? The shuttle buses were jowl-to-jowl with tourists so we took a short 20-minute walk along the Zhangjiajie roads and, son of a gun, there was an elevator or life, whatever you choose to call it. The Bailong Elevator/Lift rises 326 meters/1,069 feet up the side of a cliff to the top of a plateau. We couldn't believe our eyes. The Bailong Elevator/Lift is claimed to be the biggest, and most exposed elevator in the world. That didn't make ex-Marine (husband, Steve) happy at all with his fear of heights. Up we go... -

The shuttle buses were jowl-to-jowl with tourists so we took a short 20-minute walk along the Zhangjiajie roads and, son of a gun, there was an elevator or life, whatever you choose to call it.
The Bailong Elevator/Lift rises 326 meters/1,069 feet up the side of a cliff to the top of a plateau. We couldn't believe our eyes. The Bailong Elevator/Lift is claimed to be the biggest, and most exposed elevator in the world. That didn't make ex-Marine (husband, Steve) happy at all with his fear of heights. Up we go...

LouFest, the music festival set for Sept. 10-11 in Forest Park, has released the daily concert schedule for its 2016 event. This year’s event features more than 30 national acts across four stages.
