The Ancient City of Pingyao is UNESCO World Heritage site for being "an exceptionally well-preserved example of a traditional Han Chinese city, founded in the 14th century. Its urban fabric shows the evolution of architectural styles and town planning in Imperial China over five centuries."
The impressive city walls (total length 6 km/3.7 mi) were constructed in 14th century. Most buildings in the Old city are from the Ming and Qing dynasties. During the late Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was the financial center of China.

Shanxi
Shanxi (Chinese: 山西; pinyin: 
Shānxī; postal: Shansi) is a province of China, located in the North China region. Its one-character abbreviation is "晋" (pinyin: Jìn), after the state of Jin that existed here during the Spring and Autumn Period.
The name Shanxi means "West of the Mountains", a reference to the province's location west of the Taihang Mountains. Shanxi borders Hebei to the east, Henan to the south, Shaanxi to the west, and Inner Mongolia to the north and is made up mainly of a plateau bounded partly by mountain ranges. The capital of the province is Taiyuan.
History
Pre-Imperial China
In the Spring and Autumn Period (722–403 BC), the state of Jin was located in what is now Shanxi. It underwent a three-way split into the states of Han, Zhao and Wei in 403 BC, the traditional date taken as the start of the Warring States period (403–221 BC). By 221 BC, all of these states had fallen to the state of Qin, which established the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC).
Imperial China
The Han Dynasty (206 BC – AD 220) ruled Shanxi as the province of Bingzhou (并州 Bīng Zhōu). During the invasion of northern nomads in the Sixteen Kingdoms period (304–439), several regimes including the Later Zhao, Former Yan, Former Qin, and Later Yan continuously controlled Shanxi. They were followed by Northern Wei (386–534), a Xianbei kingdom, which had one of its earlier capitals at present-day Datong in northern Shanxi, and which went on to rule nearly all of northern China.

In Xi'an, the Muslim Quarter is home to some of the most amazing street foods in China. This massive outdoor market of roads and alleyways contains some of the most tasty, unique and interesting street foods. Shaanxi Sandwich 牛肉夹馍 (Niúròu jiā mó) - 8 RMB The first street food that I eat in this video is Nui Rou Jia Mo (beef sandwhich). Due to its origins in the Shaanxi Province, it’s often called the “Shaanxi Sandwich.” Mutton soup with bread 泡馍 (Pào mó) - 38 RMB This one isn't so much a street food as it is a full meal in a bowl. Pao mua is mutton soup with bread, and it requires a little bit of work to prepare. It's one of the hardiest dishes you can eat in Xi’an, and it’s absolutely amazing. For 38 Yuan, it’s more expensive than most dishes you’ll find around here, but it’s worth it. Street Yoghurt 酸奶 (Suānnǎi) - 8 RMB Sua nai, which literally means “sour milk,” is a sweet yoghurt drink sold in little white cups, and it’s especially satisfying on a hot day like today. Beef jerky 牛肉干 (Niúròu gān) Price varies per kilo Niu roy gan, or dried beef, is another delicious street snack available in all parts of the Muslim market place. Unlike similar looking beef jerky in the west, the variety that I bought in Xi'an has a much more distinct meaty flavor than any other beef jerky I’ve ever eaten. Bread 楠 (Nán) - 5 RMB Hailing originally from the XinJiang Province is a hardy flat bread that's sold all over Xi’an. The Uyghur people who bake this bread call it 'nan,' but Han Chinese call it 'nang.' Skewered mutton 羊肉串 (Yángròu chuàn) 10 RMB/2 skewers Thanks to vendors like the one in this video, the tempting aroma of juicy grilled meat permeates the entire marketplace. This snack is dripping with fat and seasoned to perfection, making this a rich, hardy Xi'an street snack. Peanut Candy 花生糖 (Huāshēng táng) - 20 RMB/box A few varieties of this sweet snack are available, and each requires an interesting method of preparation, such as pounding the candy with a mallet and stretching it out over a hook. The process of making this delicious street treat is even more fun to watch than it is to eat. Check out what I experience as I live in China and teach English in a brand new secondary school here in an out of the way city in China! I have never traveled extensively besides Russia and Costa Rica but this is for the longest so fay and by far. I have no real connections, no friends here and do not know anyone besides the people I met in order to work as a foreign teacher. Mind you, I have no official teaching experience beside Russia last year for 3 months in Socchi where I created some basic lesson plans and taught 6-15 year old kids at a Russian Summer Camp and coaching basketball for in the US on the weekends for 5-12 year old kids. This will be interesting because when I went to Russia I knew a little bit of Russian words, phrases and could hold my own upon arriving. However, here in China I literally came only knowing hello and thank you. I'm a fast learner but Chinese is said to be the most challenging to learn as their alphabet are all characters and certain ones mean a word and then a whole phrase. There are a few translators in the school who are fellow teacher, interns and employees but just like in Russia their English is at about a 6 year old level. So you could imagine!

The Ancient City of Pingyao is UNESCO World Heritage site for being "an exceptionally well-preserved example of a traditional Han Chinese city, founded in the 14th century. Its urban fabric shows the evolution of architectural styles and town planning in Imperial China over five centuries."
The impressive city walls (total length 6 km/3.7 mi) were constructed in 14th century. Most buildings in the Old city are from the Ming and Qing dynasties. During the late Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was the financial center of China.

In Xi'an, the Muslim Quarter is home to some of the most amazing street foods in China. This massive outdoor market of roads and alleyways contains some of the most tasty, unique and interesting street foods.
Shaanxi Sandwich 牛肉夹馍 (Niúròu jiā mó) - 8 RMB
The first street food that I eat in this video is Nui Rou Jia Mo (beef sandwhich). Due to its origins in the Shaanxi Province, it’s often called the “Shaanxi Sandwich.”
Mutton soup with bread 泡馍 (Pào mó) - 38 RMB
This one isn't so much a street food as it is a full meal in a bowl. Pao mua is mutton soup with bread, and it requires a little bit of work to prepare. It's one of the hardiest dishes you can eat in Xi’an, and it’s absolutely amazing. For 38 Yuan, it’s more expensive than most dishes you’ll find around here, but it’s worth it.
Street Yoghurt 酸奶 (Suānnǎi) - 8 RMB
Sua nai, which literally means “sour milk,” is a sweet yoghurt drink sold in little white cups, and it’s especially satisfying on a hot day like today.
Beef jerky 牛肉干 (Niúròu gān) Price varies per kilo
Niu roy gan, or dried beef, is another delicious street snack available in all parts of the Muslim market place. Unlike similar looking beef jerky in the west, the variety that I bought in Xi'an has a much more distinct meaty flavor than any other beef jerky I’ve ever eaten.
Bread 楠 (Nán) - 5 RMB
Hailing originally from the XinJiang Province is a hardy flat bread that's sold all over Xi’an. The Uyghur people who bake this bread call it 'nan,' but Han Chinese call it 'nang.'
Skewered mutton 羊肉串 (Yángròu chuàn) 10 RMB/2 skewers
Thanks to vendors like the one in this video, the tempting aroma of juicy grilled meat permeates the entire marketplace. This snack is dripping with fat and seasoned to perfection, making this a rich, hardy Xi'an street snack.
Peanut Candy 花生糖 (Huāshēng táng) - 20 RMB/box
A few varieties of this sweet snack are available, and each requires an interesting method of preparation, such as pounding the candy with a mallet and stretching it out over a hook. The process of making this delicious street treat is even more fun to watch than it is to eat.

Chinese street food and Chinese Food is something I've always dreamed about trying! So I flew to Xi'an, China and have been eating street food and noodles non stop. Best Street Food I've tasted! The Chinese food is so good in Xi'ani! I've eaten street food in Bejing, street food in Shanghai,, and street food in Chengdui, all of which has been amazing, but I have to say that the chinese street food in Xi'an has been some of the best!
The street food in Xi'an was so delicious. The restaurant food was also very nice! I had some amazing noodles and dumplings in the old quarter, the muslim quarter of Xi'an. The markets around the muslim quarter had a ton of street food to try!

Check out what I experience as I live in China and teach English in a brand new secondary school here in an out of the way city in China! I have never traveled extensively besides Russia and Costa Rica but this is for the longest so fay and by far. I have no real connections, no friends here and do not know anyone besides the people I met in order to work as a foreign teacher. Mind you, I have no official teaching experience beside Russia last year for 3 months in Socchi where I created some basic lesson plans and taught 6-15 year old kids at a Russian Summer Camp and coaching basketball for in the US on the weekends for 5-12 year old kids. This will be interesting because when I went to Russia I knew a little bit of Russian words, phrases and could hold my own upon arriving. However, here in China I literally came only knowing hello and thank you. I'm a fast learner but Chinese is said to be the most challenging to learn as their alphabet are all characters and certain ones mean a word and then a whole phrase. There are a few translators in the school who are fellow teacher, interns and employees but just like in Russia their English is at about a 6 year old level. So you could imagine!
