You can help support the global campaign for freedom of belief and expression by remembering IHEU in your will.

Whether you can leave us £20 or £20,000, remembering IHEU in your will helps us enormously.

What do I need to do?

Making or changing your will is a straightforward process, however we strongly recommend that you use a lawyer or a will writing service.

If you do not already have or know a lawyer or will writing service, you can find one in a phone directory, and they will be able to tell you how to leave a legacy to IHEU in your will.

The fee for drawing up a will should be quite small – ask the lawyer how much they charge before deciding who to use.

If your will is going to be very simple, you could use a DIY will template, of which many are available online for a small fee.

Legacy FAQs

I’d like to remember IHEU in my will, what information do I need to include?

We would always advice that you take advice from your lawyer regarding correct wording, but it will be useful to include our details as follows:

International Humanist and Ethical Union
39 Moreland Street
London
EC1V 8BB

The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization incorporated in New York, USA. And registered in England, number FC020642.

I’d like to remember IHEU in my will, but I’ve already made one – do I need to write a new one?

No – your lawyer should be able to make an addition to your will which will list any changes you wish to make.

What types of gifts can I make in my will?

Essentially there are 3 types of gifts that can be made in a will:

  1. A Pecuniary Legacy - this is a specific sum of money decided when you write your will, which will decrease in value over time due to inflation unless it is index linked. Pecuniary legacies are paid out before dealing with the estate’s residue.
  2. A Residuary Legacy - this is payable from the remainder of your estate after all debts, liabilities and cash/pecuniary legacy gifts are paid. The value of residuary legacies increase in line with the value of the estate and are often divided between several beneficiaries as a percentage of the whole.
  3. A Specific Legacy - this is the gift of a specific possession e.g. personal items, land or property.

If I remember IHEU in my will, where will the money go?

Your gift will be used where it is most needed at the time. This might be supporting humanists at risk, providing support to a new humanist group in a developing country, or ensuring that the humanist voice is  heard at the highest levels of regional and international government. This helps us to be flexible and adaptable in our approach to achieving our core aims. If you would like your gift to be used for a specific purpose you can specify this in your will.

Do I need to inform IHEU if I have remembered/intend to remember IHEU in my will?

This is entirely at your discretion. We would of course be delighted to hear from you and be able to thank you for your generosity and support. However we understand that this is a personal and private decision that you may not feel comfortable communicating.

Who should I contact if I have further questions or wish to inform IHEU of my intent to remember them in my will?

Please contact us at the London office to discuss further.
