Vietnamese people

The Vietnamese people or the Kinh people (Vietnamese: người Việt (Vietnamese pronunciation: [ŋɨəj˨˩ viət˩]), or người Kinh (Vietnamese pronunciation: [ŋɨəj˨˩ kiɲ˧])), are an Asian ethnic group originating from present-day northern Vietnam and southern China. They are the majority ethnic group of Vietnam, comprising 86% of the population at the 1999 census, and are officially known as Kinh to distinguish them from other ethnic groups in Vietnam. The earliest recorded name for the ancient Vietnamese people appears as Lạc.

Although geographically and linguistically labeled as Southeast Asians, long periods of Chinese domination and influence have placed the Vietnamese culturally closer to East Asians, or more specifically their immediate northern neighbours, the Southern Chinese and other tribes within South China. The word Việt is shortened from Bách Việt, a name used in ancient times. Nam means "south".

Origins

Written history knows the ancient Vietnamese people first simply as the Lạc or Lạc Việt, and the country of Vietnam as Văn Lang. Archaeological evidence of the Đông Sơn culture (also known as Lac Society) suggests that Bronze Age Vietnamese people were among the first to practice agriculture.

Voice of America

The Voice of America (VOA) is the official external broadcast institution of the United States federal government. The VOA provides programming for broadcast on radio, TV, and the Internet outside of the U.S., in English and some foreign languages. A 1976 law signed by President Gerald Ford requires the VOA to "serve as a consistently reliable and authoritative source of news." The VOA Charter states: "VOA news will be accurate, objective and comprehensive." The Voice of America headquarters is located at 330 Independence Avenue SW, Washington, DC, 20237, U.S. The Voice of America is fully funded by the U.S. government. The United States Congress appropriates funds for it annually under the same budget for embassies and consulates.

VOA radio and television broadcasts are distributed by satellite, cable and on FM, AM, and shortwave radio frequencies. They are streamed on individual language service websites, social media sites and mobile platforms. The VOA has affiliate and contract agreements with radio and television stations and cable networks worldwide.

Bình Minh

Bình Minh is a town of Vĩnh Long Province, in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. Under the decree No 89/NQ-CP dated Dec 28, 2012, the cabinet of Vietnam SR decided to upgrade Bình Minh of Vĩnh Long to town from rural district.

The area of Bình Minh is 93.62 km sq with 95,282 inhabitants, 2013 census.

As of 2003 the district had a population of 177,275. The district covers an area of 244 km². The district capital lies at Cái Vồn.

Geography

Bình Minh town lies to the south-west of Vĩnh Long province.It shares the border with: Bình Tân district to the North. Trà Ôn district and Cần Thơ City to the South. Bình Tân district and Cần Thơ City to the West. Tam Bình district to the East

Phạm Bình Minh

Phạm Bình Minh (born 26 March 1959) is a Vietnamese politician who has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam since 2011, as well as Deputy Prime Minister since 2013.

He was First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs from January 2009 to August 2011. He was born in Nam Định Province.

Education

He graduated in 1981 from the University of Diplomacy (now the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam). He obtained a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy at Fletcher School, Tufts University, the United States of America. He is fluent in English.

Career

He began his diplomatic career in 1981, when he worked as Desk Officer, the Department of Training, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam. From 1982 to 1985, he was sent to the Embassy of Viet Nam to the United Kingdom as Attaché. Before assuming the position of Deputy Director General of the Department for International Organizations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1991 to 1999, he worked as Desk Officer, the Department for General Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1986 to 1990.
