Frankenfish - Trailer
There is always something bloodthirsty lurking in the Louisiana Bayou. But there has never, ever, been anything like this. A pack of massive, genetically engineered flesh eating fish is combing the quiet waters of the river, searching for prey. Leaving a trail of mangled bodies along the riverbank, the creatures have local authorities scrambling to uncover what is causing the carnage and it quickly becomes clear that they are dealing with no ordinary predator - and these man-eaters far outweigh any killer they have ever come up against. Scientifically bred with a deadly snake and genetically conditioned to breathe both under water and on land, Frankenfish can hunt wherever humans tread. And they're fast. And they're hungry. 2004 Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The Atlantic salmon is being developed by AquaBounty Technologies and has an extra gene that makes it grow twice as fast as normal farm-raised salmon. George Hemminger, the founder of Survive and Thrive TV, said this is a bad development for those who favor organic and raw foods. He also said he expected the FDA to approve the fish.

Science Café -- The Rise of the Frankenfish
Science Café -- The Rise of the Frankenfish
What would happen if a new, destructive species turned up one day in your backyard? What if that species was a major predator with an insatiable appetite that could survive in some of the world's harshest environments? And what if it was thought that this aggressive species could travel over land and through water? Perhaps there would be attempts to eliminate this species for the greater ecological good. It's also likely that the story would be reported in frenzied tones and sensational movies would be made about the incident. All of this and more happened when a Northern Snakehead, colloquially dubbed the Frankenfish, was found in a pond in Crofton, Maryland in 2002. The fish, which is native to China, Russia, North Korea and South Korea, was introduced to the pond after being purchased at a live fish market in New York. Predictably, the incident sparked international conversation about the nature of, and response to, invasive species in North America. However, despite the horror stories, the Northern Snakehead has not yet had major ecological impacts on the continent. Is there truly cause for concern? Join Nick Lapointe, postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biology, for a discussion on the uncertain effects of the fish in North America. Where: Wild Oat Café at 817 Bank Street. When: Wednesday, March 28 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm The free 20-minute discussion will be followed by a question and answer session. The Science Café series takes place every second Wednesday ...

This Frankenfish combines the genes of a Chinook salmon with that of an eel allowing the fish to grow faster than it would naturally. But is it safe? And is the FDA making a massive experiment of the entire US population? Jeffrey M. Smith Author, "Seeds of Deception" and "Genetic Roulette," explains the FDA is fast tracking the approval of this modified animal but they're are not looking at all of the safety risks.

Frankenfish: Genetically engineered salmon
Genetically engineered seeds are not breaking news; however a biotech company called AquaBounty has been working on genetically engineered salmon. The fish will be a combination of Atlantic salmon and part Ocean Pout. Jeffrey M. Begich Frankenfish Opening Statement 12/15/2011
December 15, 2011- Sen. Begich gives opening remarks at the hearing of the Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard on the environmental risks of "Frankenfish." Sen. Begich points out that there is no evidence to guarantee that GE fish won't ever escape and contaminate America's wild salmon stocks and aquatic ecosystems. Begich states that allowing GE fish in our waters with such a large degree of scientific uncertainty about the effects is not worth the potential risk. Alaska is one of the world's largest suppliers of wild salmon, Sen. Begich has been encouraging the FDA to not approve GE fish since the proposal first came forward and he has also introduced legislation to ban the sale of such fish should it be approved.
