General George Washington was sworn in as the first President of the United States on April 30, 1789. President Washington entered office with the full support of the national and state leadership, and established the executive and judicial branches of the federal government of the United States. His leadership guaranteed the survival of the United States as a powerful and independent nation, and set the standard for future presidents.
The Electoral College electors, which were chosen by the state legislatures, elected Washington unanimously on February 4th 1789 and again in the 1792 election. John Adams was elected Vice President. Washington took the oath of office as the first President under the Constitution of the United States of America in 1789 at Federal Hall in New York City. Washington reluctantly accepted the position, and he never enjoyed being President.
Washington proved an able administrator. An excellent delegator and judge of talent and character, he held regular cabinet meetings to debate issues before making a final decision. In handling routine tasks, he was "systematic, orderly, energetic, solicitous of the opinion of others but decisive, intent upon general goals and the consistency of particular actions with them."
George Washington (February 22, 1732 [O.S. February 11, 1731] – December 14, 1799) was the first President of the United States (1789–97), the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He presided over the convention that drafted the current United States Constitution and during his lifetime was called the "father of his country".
Widely admired for his strong leadership qualities, Washington was unanimously elected president in the first two national elections. He oversaw the creation of a strong, well-financed national government that maintained neutrality in the French Revolutionary Wars, suppressed the Whiskey Rebellion, and won acceptance among Americans of all types. Washington's incumbency established many precedents, still in use today, such as the cabinet system, the inaugural address, and the title Mr. President. His retirement from office after two terms established a tradition that lasted until 1940, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt won an unprecedented third term. The 22nd Amendment (1951) now limits the president to eight years in office.

Silicon Valley is a nickname for the southern portion of the San Francisco Bay Area, which is located in part of the U.S. state of California known as Northern California. It is home to many of the world's largest high-tech corporations, as well as thousands of startup companies. Geographically, it encompasses all of the Santa Clara Valley, the southern half of the San Francisco Peninsula, and southern portions of the East Bay. It includes parts or most of Santa Clara County, San Mateo County, and Alameda County.
The word "valley" refers to the Santa Clara Valley, where the region has traditionally been centered, which includes the city of San Jose and surrounding cities and towns. The word "silicon" originally referred to the large number of silicon chip innovators and manufacturers in the region. The term "Silicon Valley" eventually came to refer to all high tech businesses in the area, and is now generally used as a synecdoche for the American high-technology economic sector. It also became a global synonym for leading high-tech research and enterprises, and thus inspired similar named locations, as well as research parks and technology centers with a comparable structure all around the world.
In which John Green teaches you where American politicians come from. In the beginning, soon after the US constitution was adopted, politics were pretty non-existent. George Washington was elected president with no opposition, everything was new and exciting, and everyone just got along. For several months. Then the contentious debate about the nature of the United States began, and it continues to this day. Washington and his lackey/handler Alexander Hamilton pursued an elitist program of federalism. They attempted to strengthen the central government, create a strong nation-state, and leave less of the governance to the states, They wanted to create debt, encourage manufacturing, and really modernize the new nation/ The opposition, creatively known as the anti-federalists, wanted to buil...

First U.S. president, general and statesman George Washington occupies such an unassailable place in American history that he almost seems not human—"more a monument than a man," wrote Pulitzer-Prize-winning historian Gordon Wood. But George Washington was human, and in an address Monday, February 25, 2013 in the Marvin Center's Continental Ballroom, Dr. Wood discussed some of the unique characteristics that shaped the man into a hero and influenced him—and our emerging nation.
President Obama cited George Washington's farewell address in announcing his own goodbye speech. In 1796, Mr. Washington's "warnings of a parting friend" cautioned Americans about the "wiles of foreign influence." Daily Beast editor-in-chief John Avlon, who explores the history and legacy of the address in his new book, joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss "Washington's Farewell: The Founding Father's Warning to Future Generations."

For the second podcast, I prepared a thirteen step overview of settling an estate in case you ever get asked to be someone’s executor of estate (or, if your prefer the modern term, personal representative). The probate process is a creature of state law that is mostly governed by each state’s statute, so it’s not an exaggeration to say that every state is different--the steps of administering an estate in California will have way different requirements than Texas. Still, there are general steps that are generally followed in all states, and I provided a twenty minute overview of what the process entails if you’re interested in getting the lay of the land for administering someone’s estate. #1. Washington Post Editor Marty Baron says the newspaper is approaching the Donald Trump administration as it would any administration, not with open animosity. “The way I view it is, we’re not at war with the administration, we’re at work. We’re doing our jobs,” he said at the Recode's Code Media conference at the Ritz-Carlton in Dana Point, Calif. He said the paper would have approached a Hillary Clinton administration with the same aggressive reporting. Baron, who before leading the Post edited the Boston Globe for more than a decade, criticized Trump’s depiction of the media as an opposition party as illogical. He said members of the press are too competitive with each other to behave in any way like a party, “and as far as being the opposition, we’re not the opposition either. We’re ...
