Penrith Panthers back into NRL top eight after comeback against North Queensland Cowboys

Penrith have kept their finals hopes alive after clinching a hard fought win over an injury-ridden North Queensland Cowboys on Saturday night. 

The Panthers late resurgence this season continued as they clinched their sixth win in succession to ensure they'll finish round 23 inside the top eight after a 24-16 victory over North Queensland, inspired by Nathan Cleary.

Penrith triumphs over injury-depleted Cowboys

The win sees the Panthers retain their place in the top eight.

The young halfback scored two tries, four goals and produced a potentially game-changing try-saving tackle to lead an impressive comeback from the Panthers. 

"I thought that tackle was unbelievable, it was probably the play of the night for us. It was a really desperate defensive game," Penrith coach Anthony Griffin said.

It proved to be a costly defeat for North Queensland whose injury list grew to 10 after the match, and could swell to 11 come Sunday morning with their backline depleted. They lost Michael Morgan to concussion, Justin O'Neill to a nasty elbow injury and will be sweating on medical tests on Lachlan Coote for a leg injury. 

It started brightly for the visitors who broke through the Panthers' backline after eight minutes. A quick exchange between Coote and Javid Bowen down the left edge had Penrith's defence scrambling and an off load from the nimble winger to Kane Linnett gave the centre a chance to score the first try of the night.

After 15 minutes, they commanded 70 per cent of the ball and even better territory. However the momentum shifted when O'Neill suffered a serious elbow injury. The test centre did not return to the field after twisting his elbow in a tackle and back-to-back penalties shifted the momentum abruptly. 

Penrith then turned the match on its head. Winger Josh Mansour embarrassed the Cowboys' defence with a piercing run back through the middle of the park, breaking through the tackle of Kyle Feldt and bursting past Coen Hess to score beneath the post and a successful conversion gave Penrith a surprise lead. 

But it lasted all too briefly. A clever, creative snap kick from Cowboys' hooker Jake Granville caught the Panthers' defence napping allowing Morgan to pounce and score beneath the upright to restore their lead, making it 10-6.

Their first-half recovery was soured when Granville went straight down the tunnel for a head injury assessment and he was joined by Morgan shortly after, the latter suffering a head knock when an attempt to tackle Dallin Watene-Zelezniak went horribly wrong. 

Only their hooker returned at the restart as Morgan was added to their injury list after being diagnosed with concussion. However, North Queensland's injury concerns took a back seat seven minutes into the second half when powerful forward Jason Taumalolo burst through from the right edge to extend their lead by another six points to 16-6.

Battling to reclaim a place in the top eight, the Panthers refused to relinquish the fight and the hosts clawed back minutes after conceding. A play with seemingly nothing on offer delivered Penrith their second try of the match when a stabbed short kick found the run of Cleary who scored next to the uprights and the halfback converted to draw back to within four points. 

Cleary showed his defensive nous immediately later to deny Hess what appeared to be a certain try with a brilliant tackle in-goal, somehow holding the representative forward off the ground. Despite one angle showing potentially the slightest of contact with the grass, the Bunker deemed "insufficient evidence" to overturn the on-field ruling of no try. 

They made the most of that moment and minutes later, James Tamou scored from close range against his former club to draw level. Cleary had a simple kick to make it 18-16 and he made no mistake in giving the hosts the lead. 

Another late try for Cleary sealed the win for Penrith who moved back into the top eight.
