The English Channel (French: la Manche, "the Sleeve"; Breton: Mor Breizh, "Sea of Brittany"; Cornish: Mor Bretannek, "British Sea"), also called simply the Channel, is the body of water that separates southern England from northern France, and joins the southern part of the North Sea to the rest of the Atlantic Ocean. The name "English Channel" is mostly used in English.
It is about 560 km (350 mi) long and varies in width from 240 km (150 mi) at its widest to 32.3 km (20.1 mi) in the Strait of Dover. It is the smallest of the shallow seas around the continental shelf of Europe, covering an area of some 75,000 km2 (29,000 sq mi).
The International Hydrographic Organization defines the limits of the English Channel as follows:
The IHO defines the southwestern limit of the North Sea as "a line joining the Walde Lighthouse (France, 1°55'E) and Leathercoat Point (England, 51°10'N)". The Walde Lighthouse is 6 km east of Calais (50°59′06″N 1°55′00″E / 50.98500°N 1.91667°E / 50.98500; 1.91667), and Leathercoat Point is at the north end of St Margaret's Bay, Kent (51°10′00″N 1°24′00″E / 51.16667°N 1.40000°E / 51.16667; 1.40000).

The Channel Tunnel (French: Le tunnel sous la Manche; also referred to as the Chunnel) is a 50.5-kilometre (31.4 mi) rail tunnel linking Folkestone, Kent, in the United Kingdom, with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, near Calais in northern France, beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover. At its lowest point, it is 75 m (250 ft) deep. At 37.9 kilometres (23.5 mi), the tunnel has the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world, although the Seikan Tunnel in Japan is both longer overall at 53.85 kilometres (33.46 mi) and deeper at 240 metres (790 ft) below sea level. The speed limit in the tunnel is 160 kilometres per hour (99 mph).
The tunnel carries high-speed Eurostar passenger trains, the Eurotunnel Shuttle for road vehicles—the largest such transport in the world—and international freight trains. The tunnel connects end-to-end with the LGV Nord and High Speed 1 high-speed railway lines.
Ideas for a cross-Channel fixed link appeared as early as 1802, but British political and press pressure over the compromising of national security stalled attempts to construct a tunnel. An early attempt at building a Channel Tunnel was made in the late 19th century, on the English side "in the hope of forcing the hand of the English Government". The eventual successful project, organised by Eurotunnel, began construction in 1988 and opened in 1994. At £4.65 billion, the project came in 80% over its predicted budget. Since its construction, the tunnel has faced several problems. Both fires and cold weather have disrupted its operation. Illegal immigrants have attempted to use the tunnel to enter the UK, causing a minor diplomatic disagreement over the siting of the refugee camp at Sangatte, which was eventually closed in 2002.

On June 17, 2017 Pat Gallant-Charette had a successful solo crossing of the 21 mile English Channel. She set a world record for being the oldest woman at the age of 66 years and 135 days old. Her son Tom and boat pilots Reg and Ray Brickell were instrumental in her success.
On the 24-07-12 I completed a solo swim of the English Channel in a time of 13 hrs 35 min and 56 sec, this is a video of my swim. Ably assisted my crew Elana, Doug and Mike and the pilot Eddie Spelling on his boat Anastasia. In completing the swim I became the first person from Gibraltar to swim the English Channel and the 1259th swimmer to ever complete the distance solo. I completed the swim raising money for The Soldier's Charity and The Afghan Appeal Fund. If you wish to donate please follow this link. Take a tour of Beachy Head in England -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats. In the English East Sussex county, lies a tranquil chalk headland, the Beachy Head. The chalk formation started accumulating more than 65 million years ago, around the period known as Late Cretaceous. Lying in the vicinity of the Seven Sisters chalks cliffs, this serene place is simply entrancing with gorgeous views of the sea, the sky, and the land. There are two lighthouses built on the surroundings of this headland, because it posed a significant threat to ships. Due to the continuous erosion of the cliffs, the Belle Tout lighthouse had to be shifted 17 meters inland. Steep cliffs, pristine blue waters, green lands rest unruffled in the laps of nature set to spellbin...

I still get excited about the Eurostar train trip from Paris through the English Channel Tunnel (a.k.a. "Chunnel") to London. But the routine at the station has become, well, routine: Show your ticket and passport. Wait in a lounge until it's time to board. Cross over the tracks on a secure sky bridge to a secure platform where your bullet train awaits, and follow the crowds as security officials make sure everyone gets on the right car. Within minutes, you're zipping at 180 mph across the French countryside. Now that the new tracks are complete on the English side, you go just as fast there — and within about 2.5 hours, you're in London. When the tracks parallel the highway, we pass cars like they're standing still (the train is going 100 mph faster than the speeding cars). When the atte...

This documentary explains the building of the tunnel boring machines along with details of how the tunnel was built. The primary machines or "TBM's" were the size of submarines with lunch rooms, barracks and an infirmary. This was 150 years in the making. The difficulty was equal to landing a man on the moon. These were one off custom machines, an incredible undertaking and technological acheivment.

The team revisit one of their most ridiculous challenges with the return of the amphibious cars - this time, Jeremy ditches the Toyboata for a Nissan pickup that he nicknames the Nissank, James revives his Triumph Herald sailboat and Richard modifies another Volkswagen Vanagon, which he nicknames the Dampervan, and they drive their vehicles from Sidcup to Dover before attempting to cross the English Channel to France. Jeremy and Richard compete in a half-mile drag race with an Audi R8 and a Porsche 911 Carrera 2S, and The Stig takes both of these cars for laps .
In 2006, David Walliams audaciously decided that he would swim the English Channel the 'blue riband' of sporting events in an attempt to raise money for Comic Relief. Knowing David would need the best training possible, Kevin Cahill (CEO of Comic Relief) enlisted the help of World renowned sports scientist and 'physical activity guru'; Professor Greg Whyte OBE, to guide David on his journey to accomplishing a challenge most thought impossible for David.

It is the year 1970, and we have been tasked by the British and French to build one of the world's longest tunnels, a tunnel between England and France, underneath the English Channel. We get started connecting up our resources. We need to haul logs to a Sawmill on the English side, and then the planks over to a machine factory on the French side. We need to also haul coal from the English side over to a Steel Mill on the French side. Beyond that we also need to haul Iron Ore from the French side to the nearby Steel Mill. A simple task relatively speaking. We setup freight harbors on the English and French side, and run two separate shipping lines, one to bring over Coal, and the other to bring over Planks. We setup a central distribution area on the French side to allow the transfe...
19 years old sayani das has crossed English channel within 14 hour and 8 minute. she shared her experience with bangla time
We turned around, we were headin' south
We were tryin' to get off the island
Wishin' for a sky without any clouds
With a big nice bright sun shinin'
We found a spot in a soggy swamp
And set up our tiny tent
Our feet were wet again
But we were gettin' used to it
Our feet were always wet
A man drove by in a silver car
With a mean look on his face
He looked at us in the rear-view
And then he hit the breaks
We walked up to the open window
Not knowin' what to think
But he wanted to know where we were goin'
And see if it was on his way
We told him we were goin' to Dover
And hopefully over to France that night
He said, "So am I, hop in
And I'll give you a ride"
And we were on our way
He said he stopped to pick us up
Because we looked so out of luck
He was havin' a bad day too
But he thought we had him beat
It was his philosophy that if you see
Someone in a worse way than you
It's your ethical obligation
To stop and see what you can do
I wish that everyone thought that too
He asked if we had our tickets
And when our boat would leave
We confessed we didn't know that yet
And we'd get there then we'd see
He said, "You should just ride with me
Because passengers ride free
It takes a couple of hours
And I could use the company"
So could we, so could we
But he was goin' to Belgium
And we were goin' to France
But we decided to change our plans
'Cause you don't pass up a chance like that
We got there late and he was pissed
That he missed the hovercraft
If he'd have to take the slow boat
Then he would ride first class
Our bad luck was gone at last
We got to the lonely lobby
And we filled our packs with snacks
They were free, those pastries
And those drinks would weight our backs
He could see our hesitation
We were concerned about bein' rude
He said, "Take as much as you can hold, kids
I was once like you
I have been there too"
We got aboard the ferry
And they took us to our seats
Which were basically in a nice restaurant
And it looked like we were gonna get to eat
They brought us priceless menus
And they brought us more drinks
We were the only dirty kids there
With our big backpacks and stinky feet
So we ate our three-course meal
And talked to our new-found friend
We told him about the music we played
He was an electrician
He asked where we planned to sleep that night
We said we had no clue
He said, "I'll drop you off by the side of the road
That's what I used to do
