He Said was the name used by Wire member Graham Lewis for his solo record releases in the 1980s.
The first He Said album titled Hail was released by Mute Records in October 1986. It was produced by Graham Lewis and John Fyer and recorded at Blackwing Studios in London. Collaborators on the album included fellow Wire member Bruce Gilbert and musician Brian Eno, who played a Yamaha DX7 synthesiser on the track I Fall into Your Arms. Two singles were released from the initial album, including Pump and Only One I. The CD release included the September single release, Pulling 3g's / Pale Feet.
In July 1988 Mute released the single Could You, again produced by Lewis and Fryer. This single was included on the last He Said album titled Take Care which was released by Mute the following year.
The Dead End Kids were a group of young actors from New York who appeared in Sidney Kingsley's Broadway play Dead End in 1935. In 1937 producer Samuel Goldwyn brought all of them to Hollywood and turned the play into a film. They proved to be so popular that they continued to make movies under various monikers, including the East Side Kids, the Little Tough Guys, and the Bowery Boys, until 1958.
In 1934, Sidney Kingsley wrote a play about a group of children growing up on the streets of New York City. A total of fourteen children were hired to play various roles in the play, including Billy Halop (Tommy), Bobby Jordan (Angel), Huntz Hall (Dippy), Charles Duncan (Spit), Bernard Punsly (Milty), Gabriel Dell (T.B.), and Leo and David Gorcey (Second Avenue Boys). Duncan left for a role in another play before opening night and was replaced by Leo, his understudy. Leo had been a plumber's assistant and was originally recruited by his brother David to audition for the play.
The play opened at the Belasco Theatre on October 28, 1935 and ran for two years, totalling 684 performances. Samuel Goldwyn and director William Wyler saw the play and decided to turn it into a film. They paid $165,000 for the rights to the film and began auditioning actors in Los Angeles. Failing to find actors that could convey the emotions they saw in the play, Goldwyn and Wyler had six of the original Kids (Halop, Jordan, Hall, Punsly, Dell, and Leo Gorcey) brought from New York to Hollywood for the film. The Kids were all signed to two-year contracts, allowing for possible future films, and began working on the 1937 United Artists' film, Dead End.

You can tell Georgia that you were wrapped up in my
arms last night
and I was holding you like you were mine
you can tell Georgia anytime
And you can tell Georgia that my thinking is clear
and i've been thinking that I need you near
you can tell Georgia I was here
oh you can tell Georgia I was here
Am I waking you up you said to me
am I waking you up you said to me
am I waking you up you said to me
am I waking you up dear
I said no
You can tell Georgia if I see him around
honey im gonna knock him down
oh everyone be down
oh if you see him again
oh you can tell Georgia where I am
oh you can tell Georgia where I am
Am I waking you up you said to me

am I waking you up you said to me
am I waking you up you said to me
am I waking you up dear
I said no
Well give me something that I can look forward
Give me a reason and I'll sing some more
I don't need no lies
just look me in the eyes and tell me that you feel it too
Tell me that you feel it too
I promise not to write you no more love letters
I promise not to tell you how you are much better
Than anything I could have hoped to have had
Just hate when good love goes bad
Just shame when good love goes bad
I haven't been here since I can't remember
And I haven't seen you since last year in november
And we walked on the stones on the stone we did roam
to the tower where all of us go
Theres a hole in the roof for the stars to fall in
I gather them up for you
Fill up my pockets, start walking again
I've got these worn out shoes
I've got these worn out shoes
I've got these worn out shoes
Theres a hole in my pocket for the stars to fall out
I lose them one at a time
I didnt notice when they hit the ground
The devil was three steps behind
The devil was three steps behind
The devil was three steps behind me
Theres a hole in the earth where the devil he stays
he asked if i could come to
so i grabbed my stars and i put them away
I was just passing through
I was just passing through
I was just passing through here
Theres a hole in the roof for the stars to fall in
I gather them up for you
Fill up my pockets, start walking again
Bringing these stars to you
Bringing these stars to you
He says woman go and get me water
He says woman go and get me water
Now woman go and get me water
Go and get if from a stream/I'm gonna get if from a
stream?
Then she looks at him and she starts to stomp around
She picks that/them bucket up?
Oh and then she throws it down
Throws it down
She says I ain't gonna get you water
I ain't gonna get you water
I ain't gonna get you water
Go and get it for yourself
Then he gets up from his chair and he strikes her on
the face
Puts that bucket in her hand and he sends her on her
He says woman go and get me water
Yeah woman you're gonna go and get me water
Now woman go and get me water
You're gonna be the death of me, yeah
She gets back with her pail and she pretends to fill it
She grabs for somethin else and then she hands him his
She says go ahead and drink you water
Now go ahead and drink your water
Well go on drink your water
You can drink it up for me, yeah
He takes a little drink and his face is turning red
Falls to the ground cause he can't breathe
In a minute he'll be dead, he'll be dead
She says that's the last time I get you water
It's the last time I get you water
It's the last time I get you water
Why you always being so mean?
Why you always being so mean?
Cause you'd think that you could see
The pain you bring me now
So why you always being so mean?
And why you always running your mouth?
Why you always running your mouth?
If you'd stopped to find it out
You might understand by now
So why you always running your mouth?
And why you always making me cry?
Why you always making me cry?
You look me in the eye
And tell me all your lies
So why you always making me cry?
Yeah, why you always looking so sweet?
Why you always looking so sweet?
You walk into the room
And it brings me to my knees
Yeah, so why you always looking so sweet?
Yeah, why you always making me stay?
Why you always making me stay?
If I only had a brain
I would leave you right away
Yeah, so why you always making me stay?
Oh, why can't I leave you behind?
Why can't I leave you behind?
Cause things would be just fine
If I could get you off my mind
Late at night,
Midnight movie.
got no one to talk to,
No one to see.
and I am counting stars as I lay awake dear
I know you ain't far,
But I know you ain't here with me.
So why, why do I get so lonely when there really ain't
nothing wrong.
Cause I can sleep just fine when you hold me.
Can't sleep at all when you're gone.
Yeah and why why do I stay out drinkin'
When I should just get back home.
I guess the company of strangers.
Is better than drinkin alone.
Too tired to sing.
Walking down the street.
And still cant sleep.
Just too many things,
I got running around my head.
Can't put my thoughts to rest.
Think i'll wait outside your door,
When you wake I will confess.
So why, why do I get so lonely when there really ain't
nothing wrong.
Cause I can sleep just fine when you hold me.
Can't sleep at all when you're gone.
Yeah, why why do I stay out drinkin'
When I Should just get back home.
I guess the company of strangers.
Is better than drinkin alone.
So why do I get so lonely when there really ain't
nothing wrong
cause I can sleep just fine when you hold me
cant sleep at all when you're gone
Yeah, why, why do I stay out drinkin' when I should
just get back home
Guess the company of strangers.
Is better than drinkin alone.
So why do I get so lonely when there really ain't
nothing wrong.
So why do I get so lonely when there really ain't
nothing wrong.
So why do I get so lonely yeah there really ain't
Yesterday I went a'wandering so I could ease my head
So I laid right down and closed my eyes on top of a
little bed.
I laid right down and closed my eyes on top of a little
bed.
Drop a rope to the river folks and they took me right
They fed me fish and whiskey and then I went to sleep
again
Oh, they fed me fish and whiskey and then I went to
sleep again.
Guess there I saw Samantha,
She was sitt'n on the rise.
Said, Lord, if I am dreamin' please don't let me open
my eyes
Said, Lord, if I am dreamin' please don't let me open
my eyes
Well the rain let up and the sun came out,
Samantha took my hand
She led me down to the water's edge and then we dove
right in.
She led me down to the water's edge and then we dove
right in.
I said, Oh sweet Samantha, you know I could fall for
you,
But I know that you will leave me here before the
morning dew.
I know that you will leave me here before the morning
Say, Yes, it's true. I have to go, but I hope you won't
forget,
The time you closed your eyes and laid right down on
this little bed
The time you closed your eyes and laid right down on
Somethings don't work out like they should.
Bang my head against your walls, but it ain't no good.
'Cause I'm screaming at you, but you're screamin' at me
'bout what I think you should so do, or how you wish I
could be
'bout what I think you should so do, or how you wish I
could be
So I raise my glass, I ain't never seen a face so fine
You walk on past, and I wonder if you'll really come back
this time.
I did the best that I could.
Somethings don't work out like they should
I did the best that I could.
I did the best that I could.
We did that best that we could.
Somethings don't work out like they should.
Ooh, somethings don't work out like they should.
I dont mind walking down
I dont mind walking down
Cuz Lord i've been trying to get my feet on the ground
and i dont mind walking down, on down
Been looking for the rhythm of the streets
Been looking for the rhythm of the streets
New york new york do you remember me
cuz i've been looking for the rhythm of the streets, of
the streets
Aint no use in riding on the train
no there aint no use in riding on the train
already been standing in the early morning rain
and there aint no use in riding on the train, on the
train
Im gonna get to you somehow
Honey im gonna get to you somehow
i know youve been lonely, you might not have known
Cuz i'm gonna get to you somehow, baby somehow
We gonna be together one of these days
Honey we gonna be together one of these days
and I dont care what they do, dont matter what they say
cuz we're gonna be together one of these days, baby one
of these days
I dont mind walking down
I dont mind walking down
Cuz Lord I've been trying to get my feet on the ground
and i dont mind walking down
Baby down down down
baby down down down
baby down down down
I got you now, i got you now
I was walkin, just about 3rd and St Marks
But it ain't the same as it was last time i was here
So i stood there, watchin the light as it changed
remember that time in the rain when we ran through the
streets
yeah we were waiting on something good to go down
just waiting on something good
yeah we were waiting on something good to go down
just waiting on something good
Sally, i used to show up at her door
but i don't do that anymore, she answers my call
she says "baby, don't you go breakin' your back
to buy me the things that i lack
cuz i will get 'em myself
yes and I don't need nobodys help
yes and I'll love you just the same
if you ain't got a dime to your name"
Cuz I'm waiting on something good to go down
just waiting on something good
yeah we were waiting on something good to go down
just waiting on something good
On the counter, in the back of the hotel bar
I was joining a hotel choir and i just could not
and it was B-right and the Tragedies led the whole gang
and we all stood up and we sang an old gospel song
yeah but we didn't sing very long
Cuz we were waiting on something good to go down
just waiting on something good
yeah we were waiting on something good to go down
Hey come and dance with me
Hey come and dance with me
Cuz I've got two left feet
I've got two left feet, come and dance with me
Please wont you calm down
Please would you calm me down
Cuz I dont remember how
No I dont remember how, would you calm me down
Oh I see fields of green
Honey I see fields of green
I've been watching you in these dreams
I've been watching you in these dreams in fields of green
Oh we could run away
Honey we could run away
Oh and I've been thinking about you all day
Oh I've been thinkng about you all day we could run away
Trouble comes and trouble she goes
And trouble's got a key to my front door
And you come and you stay just as long as you please
Even when I ask nicely for you to leave
Yeah trouble
Yeah trouble
Well trouble if you ain't got nothin' nice to say
Then trouble why don't you go away
Well trouble I need your help this time
See there's this beautiful girl and she's with some
stupid guy
If they could break up, oh and I could move in
Then I think you and me well, we could be friends
Yeah trouble
Yes trouble
Well trouble if you would just help me win
Then trouble you could go away again
Trouble I've asked you repeatedly
But you just won't move you won't even humor me
So I'm only gonna tell you one more time
If you don't leave then I guess I'll cry
Well if you don't leave then I guess I'll cry
Cry trouble
Cry trouble
Well trouble I hope that you've enjoyed your stay
Now trouble why won't you go away
Yeah trouble why don't you go away
Yeah trouble why don't you go away
Go away
She was walkin' with lovin' in her eyes.
Momma didn't know where she was,
She nearly started a riot.
She called the police to check it out.
Took her boyfriend down town.
He thought he was a criminal.
Yeah, He though he was a real hard case.
Oh what a day,
Oh what a waste,
In this town.
Was a friday night football game,
Down at the highschool stadium.
She was a cheerleader,
With her quarterback sneaking out behind the bleachers
to play.
Cause they dont care what people say,
In this town.
Nothin' ever changes in this town.
And the story's always the same one in this town.
And i thank you lord for keepin' us safe,
And i thank you mother for making us pray.
She is a single mother workin' at a resteraunt.
Under protective custody.
And every day a boy reminds her of what they lost,
By movin' away from the city.
She says i know that you miss your friends in L.A.
But atleast your father is so far away,
From this town.
From this town.
Nothin' ever changes in this town.
And the story's always the same one in this town.
And i thank you lord for keepin' us safe,
And i thank you mother for making us pray.
For making us pray.
There's an old man on a front porch swing,
And hes always talkin' to nobody.
But if you ever stop to listen,
You might learn a thing or two.
Yeah, I'm talkin' to you.
You see, once he was a young man.
And he was holdin' a young girls hand.
And they where walking' down by the lake,
And about nineteen-forty-eight,
And they had their first kiss.
Oh, with the moon shining down,
And they had the true love.
Oh, it really could be found.
In this town.
Oh, in this town.
Yeah, in this town.
Yeah, in this town.
Nothin' ever changes in this town.
And the story's always the same one in this town.
And i thank you lord for keepin' us safe,
And i thank you mother for making us,
Oh, For making us pray.
For making us pray.
In this town.
Oh, in this town.
It's Just the way it goes in this town.
Woke up next to you this morning blue
Your eyes they open so slow
To the things they did not want to see
And, lord, I'm praying that it wasn't me
You say you love me sometimes
I say I love you way too much
You got a different way of showing things
And now knowing you is killing me
The only thing I know is true
Is when I close my eyes at night
The only thing I see is you
And I believe that we can see it through
Well I see the morning coming
but you have disappeared
and all the walls are crumblin
I wish that you were here
wish that you were here
And all the lights gone blackness in the godforesaken
town
and all the streets are empty, noone is around
no one is around
So I'll wait for the sun
I'll wait for the light
Look for you to run
lost you in the night
Chase you down by day
morning hours away
sleeping never comes
so i'll wait for the sun
Well that lonesome wind is blowin
Its putting on a show
And i hear that train callin
just beggin me to go
just beggin me to go
So I'll wait for the sun
I'll wait for the light
Look for you to run
lost you in the night
Chase you down by day
morning hours away
sleeping never comes
The city keeps on going...on.
Float down the river with my Iddy and Jay (??????)
Get off the boat and board a plan to JKF and I, ain't
slept a week
But it don't seem to matter to the subway squeakers,
squeak (and squeak)
The city keeps on going
We just keep on rolling
The city keeps on going
We just keep on rolling...on.
Grand Central Station and got wind they're coming on
And the goodness yesterday(????)
No one round oh and I still recognize her after all
these years and she still looks the same
Ah, she still looks the same.
Oh and we end up in Brooklyn
It was rainin' so hard
Come up all day
And the rain to clear it off,
Oh we're just people watching on 3rd and St. Mormons
(???)
And when the girl's kissing my face, my face
She was just kissing my face
And again, again...
Just when I was sick and lonely,
There was a shaking on the ground
We were hiding from the rain
We were riding on the train
Just when I was sick and lonely,
There was a shaking on the ground
Were were hiding from the rain
Were were riding on the train.
She was dancing on the midway
Just kissing my face
She was dancing on the midway
Just kissing my face
Dancing on the midway
Kissing my face
Dancing on the midway
Goin' down
No, I won't be long
Goin' down
In a minute I'll be strong
For you, yeah
Strong
For you, yeah
Well I can't stop these feelings
From running around my brain
But I won't mind tonight
When you're in my arms again
No, I won't mind tonight
When you're in my arms again
Goin' down
No, I won't be long
Goin' down, down, down, down
In a minute I'll be
Strong, strong, strong, strong, strong
For you, yeah
Strong, strong, strong, strong, strong
For you, yeah
For you, yeah
No don't worry with your suitcase, dear
And don't worry with your suitcase, dear
Cause the people out to get you
They don't know that you're here
So don't worry with your suitcase, dear
Honey, you don't have to go nowhere
Honey, you don't have to go nowhere
Cause there's people out their screaming
They linger in the air
But you don't have to go nowhere
Just forget about your troubled mind
Just forget about your troubled mind
Oh cause I can see you dreaming
Knowing that it's time
So forget about your troubled mind
So don't worry with your suitcase, dear
No, don't worry with your suitcase, dear
Cause the people out to get you
They don't know that you're here
So don't worry with your suitcase, dear
No, the people out to get you
They don't know that you're here
Well I haven't got all the words down yet
So I'll give you the ones
That I don't forget
And you took me back
But I must admit
Where'd you come from?
And where are you goin'?
And you were the one for me last night
When the whiskey was gone
And the glasses dry
And you sat at my table
And we talked for a while
And I knew you
Though I'd never known you.
I'll sing you a song if you want me to
And the verses aren't quite on
But the words are true
And I mean you no harm
You might think I do
How I wish
You would change your mind
We sat in the back of a smoke filled room
And the piano
She played a worn out tune
And you whispered to me
That you'd be leaving soon
When I turned to answer
Airport road there's a bus turned over
Many people died, I guess I should've been a soldier
What the hell you know it's not my fault
We been stranded here and it's too far to walk
It's late afternoon approaching evening now
And I'm just sitting in this airport bar wondering how
How I got here and how to get home
Has anyone around seen a payphone?
I gotta get out of here
And I'm stranded, the west of my coast
I just need to get home
And I'll be back here before you know
So how about it Mr. Pilot, won't you let my people go?
Hungry now get a bite to eat
And the pilot sits down to rest his feet
A fat man walks into the pizza shop
Another little one walks out with nothing...
Pretty girl walks by and I say...
She turns her back, guess I caught her eye
The cripple rolls backwards in a wheelchair
And the pretty girl stops to fix her hair
And I gotta get out of here
'Cause I'm stranded, the west of my coast
And I just need to get home
And I'll be back here before you know
So how about it Mr. Pilot, won't you let my people go?
Cop tackles me down, shouts, "Give me a hand"
And his partner comes up and says, "You got the wrong
man."
So the night grows on and I'm in the ...
Call a friend at home, says "I wish you were here
Oh how I wish you were here"
I talk to a stranger to pass the time,
Says, "How are you, boy, 'cause I'm doing fine."
Place grows cold so I put a sweater on
I turn to reply but the stranger was gone
The stranger was gone
And I'm stranded, the west of my coast
I just need to get home
And I'll be back here before you know
So how about it Mr. Pilot, won't you let my people go?
I take one more drink and I get up from my seat.
And I try not to fall asleep
The rich push their carts and they prepare to fly
As a little boy stops and waves goodbye
Stops to wave goodbye
Oh and he waves goodbye
And I'm stranded, at the west of my coast
And I just want to get home
And I'll be back here before you know
Well don't you get in my way
cuz I have made up my mind
And don't you try calming me down
cuz I don't want to be calm this time
We have been here so long
and I can't stand to see your face no more
And I just wish you'd leave me alone
long enough so I could get out your door
You're looking for your stompin' grounds
Hey love you gotta look around
cuz I'm skipping town
yea I'm skipping town
Well I ain't saying it's your fault
I'm just saying we're through
If I had to lay my finger down
oh you know it might be pointing at you
All those fights that you'd pick
and all those things that you'd say
And all those times you made me cry
'Tell you something: I won't be crying today.
If you're looking for your stompin' grounds
hey love you better look around
Why're you taking my hand
can't you hear me?
don't you understand?
I'm leaving.. I'm leaving...
I'm leaving you.
If you're looking for your stompin' grounds
hey love you better look around
If you're looking for your stompin' grounds
hey love I'm leaving now
If you're looking for your stompin' grounds
hey love you better look around

Your my skinnydippin' girl no
I've been sinkin' low, I can't find my baby
I've been sinkin' low, I can't find my baby
I've been high and low, faces of these stone walls
Don't know where she goes, but I know that she's gone
Her skin is dark and softer than a baby's
When she sings to me her voice is sweet as candy
Her lips are rose red, as sweet as cheery wine
Her eyes are green and blue, .... mind
I've been sinkin' low, I can't find my baby
I've been sinkin' low, I can't find my baby
I've been high and low, faces of these stone walls
Don't know where she goes, but I know that she's gone
Went down to the station, I thought that I would find
With your suit case on the ground, I knew I was right
behind you, yeah
As the train doors closed I saw you through the window
You watched me as I waved; the train took you away
I've been sinkin' low, I can't find my baby
I've been sinkin' low, I can't find my baby
I've been high and low, faces of these stone walls
Don't know where she goes, but I know that she's gone
I know that she's gone
I saw that building burned down, when I got to your
front lawn
I thought that you'd be here, yeah, but you'd already
gone
I went down to the river, you hid under the water
And then you held your breath, yeah, and then you
disappeared
I've been sinkin' low, I can't find my baby
I've been sinkin' low, I can't find my baby
I've been high and low, faces of these stone walls
I am your secret babe
Watch me unfold
Dancing in these streets so late
nobody knows
nobody knows us
The first time i looked at you
you looked at me
swimmin in this water so cool
just like a river queen
just like the river queen
and i dont remember falling asleep
must have been holding on tight
and all i can think of and i can dream
is dancing with you in red lights
sunshine state is closed
look at the water on the road
and im gonna get in my boat
and to you i will float
and to you i will float
and i dont remember falling asleep
must have been holding on tight
and all i can think of and i can dream
is dancing with you in red lights
I am your secret babe
Watch me unfold
Dancing in these streets so late
nobody knows
happy new year's, santa rosa, here I am
I was brought in by the weather and the cold
I was heading towards the west to find the sand
I guess i'll have to settle for the snow
I am just a stranger to this town
I'm lonely and i'm restless and i'm stuck
I wish I knew a way to get back down
and I wish I had a shovel in this truck
the state police won't let me on the street
I told them my story but they don't care
there's an old dog just lying at the feet
of a girl who once wore flowers in her hair
and my heart lies fifty miles ahead
underneath a bridge just out of sight
where she sits beneath the covers of her bed
where she waits for me to meet her in the night
and this old town is named after a rose
that looms along a hillside in cold ground
but my heart has been broken and it's closed
like the freeway that would take me out of town
and just because I ain't got no regrets
that don't mean I didn't get it wrong
and my love was like a homemade summer dress
I am just a lonely winter song
and I dust off the snowflakes from the hood
and I talk to an old friend on the phone
she says 'I think that the calm could do you good
you have been driving so long'
so happy new year's, babe, I guess this is goodbye
and I hope you that find someone you can hold
and if you hear that midnight whistle cry
Darling i've been down and out
ever since you left town
I aint been the same no matter how i try
sometimes we dont get to choose
the ones who wear these walking shoes
I'm just a poor boy with the blues
no I ain't nothin new
I'm gonna fill this whiskey cup
and i'm gonna pick this banjo up
I'm gonna play with the tragedies
singing good time harmonies
B Wright dont you let me down
play that one called sad clown
You know that ones about me
I've been thinking about leaving town
Well sunshine she came out today
and it dont matter anyways
cuz i still see the water
thats drippin down my door
i used to hear the children play
i used to hear the birds sing
one day they just stopped
i dont hear them anymore
I'm gonna fill this whiskey cup
and i'm gonna pick this banjo up
I'm gonna play with the tragedies
singing good time harmonies
B Wright dont you let me down
play that one called sad clown
You know that ones about me
I've been thinking about leaving town
Oh and i got caught in this whistling wind
doin my best to regret these sins
Lord would you forgive me if you know that i'm gonna do
it again
its not that i'm not sorry Lord, its just that im not
strong
oh cuz when that woman looks at me i cant remember
right from wrong
I'm gonna fill this whiskey cup
and i'm gonna pick this banjo up
I'm gonna play with the tragedies
singing good time harmonies
B Wright dont you let me down
play that one called sad clown
You know that ones about me
I've been thinking about leaving town
Sad clown, sad clown
watch the wheels roll around
take that money into town
go buy a drink
sad clown, sad clown
always with that same frown
circus train got you down,
I was born.
An only child.
On a warm,
Jersey night.
My mother was a dress maker.
My father drove a truck.
My family never was much good.
When it came to money luck.
Me and my best frend took to stealin'
When we where only sixteen.
Then one year in a county jail.
Made a man outa Tommy and me.
We caught the train to New York.
We thought we where so tough.
Started fightin' for quick cash.
We decided we didn't need money that bad.
We where the runaway children.
Always lost in the dark.
Trying to forget where we came from.
Trying to make a new start.
Oh, it was so hard.
Earned my first honest dollar.
Working at the mill out side of town.
Tommy went elsewhere.
Never did like the sound of a poor man crying.
So Tommy got mixed up with people.
The kinda people you just don't get mixed up with.
And they beat him so badly.
He almost didn't live.
To regret it, but he did.
Oh, thank god he did.
We where the runaway children.
Still lost in the dark.
Trying to forget where we came from.
Trying to make a new start.
Oh, but it was so hard.
Oh, it was.
It was just so hard.
Tommy moved eight years ago.
Out to Las Vegas.
Now he sweeps the floors in the casino's.
Though he gambles when hes able.
When will he ever learn?
When will he ever learn?
And me, i went back home.
Oh' and i made it just in time.
To say im sorry for what i'd done.
Right before my mother died.
Now i drive a truck.
Just like i swore i never would.
But i need the money worse than i need the luck.
I know my old man just did the best that he could,
With what he had.
Its funny the things we finaly learn how to add, up.
We where just runaway children.
We where lost in the dark.
Trying to forget where we came from.
Oh, but we never.
We never made it that far.
Never made it that far.
Oh it was still so hard.
Well I'm gonna be a river boat captain
When I grow up, when I grow up
So we can sail the whole day through
Where do you go when your luck runs out
Yeah, where do you go
Where do you go now
And where do you go when you feel like cryin'
Where do you go
Where do you go now
Won't you come inside with me today
You could stay inside with me today
Can't you see it's gonna rain
And how do you feel when the lights go out
How do you feel
How do you feel alone
And how do you feel when there's no one there
On the other end of the phone
Won't you come inside with me today
You just stay inside with me today
Can't you see it's gonna rain
Yeah, can't you see it's gonna rain
Yeah, it's gonna rain
And don't you wanna get warm
And don't you wanna get dry
And don't you wanna stay
Can't you see it's gonna rain
So won't you come inside with me today
'cause I can see it's gonna rain
Yeah, I can see it's gonna rain
Can't you see it's gonna rain
He was just a child.
When she,
Left him there alone.
He was just too wild.
She was just too young.
Too much too handle.
He was always asking why.
She didn't know the answers.
She'd just hang her head and cry.
He said,
Momma im afraid that,
No one can calm me down.
And im just scared that,
No one will know how.
To put me in my place.
To put me in my place.
To put me in my place.
To put me in my place.
Where do i belong?
Father never forgave him.
For making momma leave.
You can up and die boy.
It wouldn't bother me.
Sent him off to school.
Somewhere up north.
Way too many rules to fllow.
He didn't have a choice.
Please,
Im so afraid that, no one can calm me down.
Im just scared that,
No one will know how.
To put me in my place.
Oh, to put me in my place.
To put me in my place.
To put me in my place.
Where do i belong?
(to put me in my place)
Where do i belong?
(to put me in my place)
Where do i belong?
(to put me in my place)
Where do i belong?
To put me in my place.
Now he's all grown up.
Got a wife of his own.
Boy's started a family now.
He's never home.
She says,
How am i supposed to love you?
Your always out on the town.
How's your daughter gonna know you?
When you won't come around.
He goes to tuck her in.
The girl he never see's.
And she turns to him.
Thought it was only me.
He never sleeps.
Sleeps.
She says,
Dad im so afraid that,
No one can calm me down.
Said, baby i can't believe that.
I think we've finaly found our ground.
Put me in my place.
Oh, put me in my place.
Oh, i think she just put me in my place.
Oh, put me in my place.
Where we belong.
(put me in my place)
Where we belong.
(put me in my place)
Where we belong.
(put me in my place)
Where we belong.
(put me in my place)
Where i belong.

And it turns out Mona Lisa she knew nothing
Yeah she can't get much loving from a wall
Yeah and if some stranger tried to take you from me

First I'd rescue you then I'd punch him in the jaw

We tried to sink in with the locals
It turns out they ain't mean but they still don't know

The children can't believe what they just saw
But after all this weather you don't need this damn

Come in, come in John Henry
Come in out of the cold
Cause that old north wind is callin'
But it ain't time for you to go
Sit down, Miss Pollyanna
Please wait for my return
Cause that old north wind is callin'
But my love for you still burns
Don't go, don't go John Henry
Please lay down your hammer today
Cause that old north wind is callin'
And she'll put you in the grave
Don't worry Pollyanna
You know that I can't stay home
But if that old north wind comes callin'
I will fight her like a hammer to stone
Come quick, Miss Pollyanna
John Henry was taken today
And that old north wind came callin'
one more drink before i split town
pulled up in a rose pink caddilac
he was singing with the top down
'girl from the north', dylan and johnny cash
he won the car in a card game, listened to the boss and
keeps his clothes in a gunny sack
she said "tell you what, sailor, if you take me out of
here
I'll do anything that you ask
cause I don't wanna die like the people down here
but I feel that I'm fading fast"
and he looked over to her chesnut hair
and said "I don't believe in love"
but he knew good and well she was the only girl there
so he figured it was close enough
and they hopped in the car, rolled the windows down far
and they headed through the desert plains
and she didn't even mind when they crossed the state
line
and the sky opened up with rain
and they went three states before they even spoke a
word
he leaned over just to ask her name
she said "take me to the sixty-one highway, sailor
and you can call me queen jane
cause the only thing I stole from the town was a crown
that I took from a beauty queen"
and he looked over to her deep green eyes
and knew that she was just as cold as him
so he went to the trunk, grabbed the pistol from the
side
and told janey of his plan
and they went to the store, she put the gas in the car
he came out running with a case of beer
and he jumped in the back with the money in the sack
and janey, she took the wheel
and they went off in a blaze, in a sweet summer haze
to the bullets in the cashier
you keep your head down, sailor, cause I might need ya
later
just holler if you can hear
cause I'm gonna need a man, not a farmer girl tan
and a caddilac souvenir
and they camped out by the railroad bridge
and they laid low all night
watched the sun come up over mercury ridge
from a hilltop out of sight
they hit five more banks and the small town safes
and they knew that they could get out fast
had the time of their life but they had to have a talk
cause they knew that it couldn't last
they made friends with the man at the mexico border
and they left him with a bag of cash
she said "tell you what, sailor, don't care about the
paper
but I'm happy that we passed
cause I'm feeling pretty tired and i'm carrying a child
and we both need a rest"
and they settled down to a house in the water
where they would live to be old and grey
and many years later their kids are all older
She was just a year ahead of me
But that meant so much back then, you see
When the high school boys caught wind of me
They threw me in the mud
And I fought my way to the car that night
And I cursed the water, and I cursed the light
But I learned to swim, and I learned to fight
For the things that mean the most
And oh,
Sweet Samantha dear, I know it's been so many years
And I hope that they have been kind, my friend
Oh, I think about you now and then
When the sun is sinking low
Over the docks by the shore
Where I laid up in green fields with you
Singing only the songs that we knew
Singing only the songs that we knew
Today was a good day
It was better than most
Didn't see me no demons
Didn't fight with no ghosts
Baby, maybe we haven't gone crazy after all
And there's only four seasons, but even the best of us
fall
She says hold me up darling
Because I can't see straight
Been drinking again
And staying up late
Hope you understand
That it's just that time of year
And there's only four seasons, but these feelings are
always here
I haven't been here, since I don't know when
But they sure look different than they did back then
And I'm holding on
Saying that's just the way that it goes
But true friends they don't change every time that the
wind blows
We've been at this party a little too long
Ain't putting it down, honey, don't get me wrong
I just think it's time to be moving towards the door
Because there's only four seasons, and I'm looking for
something more
So let's pack our bags, get out of this town
Head up the coast where the wind knocks you down
Not the people you know
Or the people that you thought you knew
There's only four seasons, and I guess we'll be leaving
No more paintings, no more sunshine
No more lazy days, no more next time
No more fighting, no more love
It'll all be long gone, when you wake up
And I best be movin' on
No more single beds, no more sleepyhead
No more bloody nose, no more twinkle toes
No more blue skies, no more lying eyes
No more bug bites, no more crazy nights
And I best be movin' on
Well I can't tell, I lost my way
But I know that I can't stay
So no more children, running through the fields
No more heartaches, left to be revealed
I'm growing kind of weary, of all this running around
It's time for a little change, I'll put my feet on the
ground
And I best be movin' on
And I best be movin' on
Some movie star told you this ain't where it's at.
So you packed your bags and one night you headed out.
Said, these small town blues got you going insane
gone into the city, gonna change your name
and you never look back at where you came
swore you'll never be the same.
Do you miss me?
Do you miss me?
You're a big girl now, got your big shoes
and you're running around with big girl blues
and I know you don't doubt yourself anymore
no, when you feel like leaving, walk out the door
and I bet you ain't got nothin left to learn
it's better that way cause you never get burned
and you try not to think about what might have been
cause you know this town is just sink or swim
Do you miss me?
Do you miss me?
Do you miss me?
Well the last time I say you were waving goodbye
from the back of the train with a tear in your eye.
Now I hear you're in love with some big city man
and together you're making your big city plans
and you hope he don't find out about who you are
that we used to catch fireflies in mason jars
and we used to go down to the county fair
and we listened to blue grass in summer air
and we danced all night as the rain came down
and you held my hand as we slept on the ground
and we wrote our names in the old oak wood
I guess some things don't work out like they should.
Do you miss me?
Do you miss me?
Do you miss me?
Do you miss me?
Do you miss me? yeah...
I know a girl in meteor city
we used to drive down old crator road
and i would hold her hand and she would look pretty
didn't worry about the things that we just didn't know
didn't worry about the things that we just didn't know
i'd spend my days in this run down cafe
working for a room at the top of the stairs
and she would work the con man just to be here longer
it's the only thing that kept me there
I couldn't wait for the cooler night
I couldn't wait for the cooler night
i know a girl in meteor city
we used to drive down old crator road
and i would hold her hand and she would look pretty
didn't worry about the things that we just didn't know
didn't worry about the things that we just didn't know
and i said oh sophia where'd you get a name like that
shes i think she was a move star before i saw before i
was born
though but i really don't remeber no no
she left when i was so young
when i was so young
i know a girl in meteor city
we used to drive down old crator road
and i would hold her hand and she would look pretty
didn't worry about the things that we just didn't know
didn't worry about the things that we just didn't know
at night the stars they all jump through the sky
with the dreams that i miss so much
and i hate the emptyness and the pain inside
a little whisky and a womans touch
yeah thats good a enough
yeah thats good enough
i know a girl in meteor city
we used to drive down old crator road
Fand i would hold her hand and she would look pretty
didn't worry about the things that we just didn't know
didn't worry about the things that we just didn't know
didn't worry about the things that we just didn't know
It was a fine day in the fifth grade
when mary may let bobby walk her home from school
he had her books in hand
and he was listening to every word she said
like it was the gospel of the prophecies
and he loved the way her hair fell across her dress
went home singing who wrote the book of love
and try a little tenderness
the next day ont he playground
bobby sat mary down ont he swingset behind the sandbox
and she said, bobby i just wanna play,
so what is it you have to say?
he said, mary, marry me.
we could live out by the sea
like the do on the movie screen.
oh, marry me, mary may,
before you go back to play
it was graduation day
they were waiting on a plane to take mary away
said, theres nothing left for me here but you
bobby, i hope you can find yourself through
theres so much that i wish to know
and i have to do this on my own
and i hope you can understand
bobby, write me when you can
he said, take my highschool ring
so time to time you can think of me
and there's just one more thing before you leave
he said, mary, marry me
we could live out by the sea
oh, like they do on the movie screens
oh, marry me, mary may,
before you are fly away
theres so much time has past since that day
and mary stopped writing years ago
and bobby never took his music on the road
guess he never really gave up hope
though mary shes got everything she thought she wanted
got a phd, she is an independent business woman
climbing up the corporate ladder
though it really dont seem to matter,
she is lonely beyond belief
so one day she went home
looking for the only love she ever known
she found him once again
playing circuit at the holiday inn
still singing the song about the one he lost long ago
just goes to show you never know
she took his hand in hers
not everything she had planned and rehearsed
she said, bobby, marry me
we could live in a apartment building with the window
we could take in movies on the weekend
or plan our vacation
take a honeymoon by the sea
oh bobby, wont you just marry me?
wont you just marry me?
oh please, marry me

It was a fine day in the fifth grade
When a train comes, I don't know what to do
I'm leavin' town, but I ain't leavin' you
When I get down, get these far away blues
And I don't wanna go back home
I could say I'm sorry if you think it would help
You say you call me, yeah but you never can tell
You just stand there, just wishing me well
And I can't think of nothin' to say
And I'm gonna write you a song
To tell you just how much I've been missing you
You wont have to wait very long
And i'll be home dear
And I know that you've been crying at night
But you dont have to be lonesome cause
I'm gonna make it right
Make it up, Make it up to you
Make it up to you (x3)
We've been gone now for four weeks maybe longer
And it's cold out and this hurt's gettin' stronger
And I called you but you just sat in that corner
Watching that telephone ring
Baby pick up so I can hear your sweet voice
Cause I miss you, don't be sad anymore
Cause one day I'll walk through that door
And hold you in my arms
And I'm gonna write you a song
To tell you just how much I've been missing you
You don't have to wait very long
And I'll be home dear
And I know that you've been crying at night
But you dont have to be lonesome cause
I'm gonna make it right
Make it up, Make it up to you
Make it up to you (x3)
You've been drinkin', you've been drinkin' your wine
And you're wasted, yes and wastin' your time
And it's plain now, when you say it isn't mine
Well baby can't you see I've been tryin'
I'm ready cause I know this can work
And I would take you to the ends of the earth
Just hold on just a little bit longer and I'll be back
by your side
Yeah cause, I'm gonna write you a song
To tell you just how much I've been missing you
You don't have to wait very long
And I'll be home, yeah I'll be home
And I know you've been crying at night
But you dont have to be lonesome cause
I'm gonna make it right
Make it up, Make it up
Well it hurts so much me
i scream out loud
oh god forbid you could have left me out
of your wiked intentions, hateful fools to see
and i wish you had not been born
while we have to meet
and i hope this isnt love
so carry on with your cutting people down
he may fall in love as he falls to the ground
and you never seem to care what we feel inside
as long as no one gets near the safes that you hide
and i hope this isnt love
and i hope this isnt love
last night i had the sweetest dream
that you were nowhere near me
that you could not cut me
that you do not affect me
that i had my sanity
that was just a dream
that was just a dream
so go away
why cant you leave me be
because i love your face and need for me
so back to your main city for it suits you so well
if you ever ever care that you never found me
that you would never tell me
and i hope this isn't love
Once upon a broken heart.
Theres a time for love.
And a time the lovers part.
And it doesn't always work out.
The way that we planned.
Did you really wanna know the way,
That all the movies end?
Mr. Moonlight wont you take the rain away?
And leave me with the hope of a better day.
No, sunshine don't you let me frown.
I've heard the grass is always greener,
On the lovers side of town.
Midnight picture show.
And, love talk radio, Just,
Doesn't quite make up for,
The ladies that i used to know.
And, Well some they wish me well.
And some became my enemies.
And some i told to go to hell.
And some still haunt me in my dreams.
Some still haunt me in my dreams.
Mr. Moonlight wont you take the rain away?
And leave me with the hope of a better day.
No, sunshine don't you let me frown.
I've heard the grass is always greener,
On the lovers side of town.
On the lovers side of town.
Mmmmm.
I am ridin' on the midnight train.
Not sure exactly why i came.
I am fine with just me and my guitar.
But sometimes i am wishing for a little more.
Just a little more.
So little girl won't you sit by me?
Over here.
So i can whisper sweet nothings in your ear.
and i just.
Just wanna listen to what you have to say.
And we can tell the world that they can just fade away.
They can fade away.
Mr. Moonlight wont you take the rain away?
And leave me with the hope of a better day.
Ohhh, sunshine don't you let me frown.
Cause i've heard the grass is always greener,
On the lovers side of,
I've heard the grass is always greener,
On the lovers side,
I've heard the grass is always greener,
On the lovers side of town.
On the lovers side of town.
Ooooh, on the lovers side of town.
My eyes were sad
And my fingers were mad
As I wrote this letter that said
I wish you the best in your new royal address
And I wish that he were dead'
Guess you don't mind that he's already got a wife
And a mistress already in place
You just throw back your hair
And you'll say you don't care
When you hide that look on your face
You used to have such a pretty little smile
Yeah, but look at you now
He's a better man now that you're holding his hand
Now that he's got yours to keep
Oh, and I hope you can feel your someone who needs you
When it comes for your turn to eat
And so it seems his rich accent must mean that he's a
bit brighter than me
Oh, and I guess he won't lie through the whites in his
eyes
Or the gap in the front of his teeth
You used to have such a pretty little smile
Yeah, but look at you now
Well, if I had to guess
I would not be impressed
By the cups of tea he can drink
No, cause the fatter he gets from those caviar chips
Is the faster your ship starts to sink
Oh, and I guess I can't blame you
If I had to shame you
With the things I've done since you left town
Probably have to tell your new lover
Fetch a pail of water
For your building crumbling down
You used to have such a pretty little smile
Yeah, but look at you now
I screamed at your letter
For half I'm alone
Screamed til my throat was sore
And I lost my voice when he lost your choice
Don't ever come knock on my door
You used to have such a pretty little smile
Yeah, but look at you now
Honey, look at you now
Oh, look at you now
Look at you now
Look at you now
Sometimes I wish I was somebody else
Sometimes I wish that I had more to give
Sometimes I wish that I was better than this
Honey let me sing to you
Oh, let me sing
Oh, let me sing
Honey let me sing to you
Wish I could buy you the finest of things
Wish I could give you diamonds and rings, yes
I'm not a rich man, and all I can bring
Is a song I can sing to you
Oh, let me sing
Oh, let me sing
Honey let me sing to you
Yes I've been burned too many times
I've been accused of crossin' the line
The best I can do is explain in rhymes
Honey let me sing to you
Oh, let me sing
Oh, let me sing
Honey let me sing to you
Been around the world as much as I can
If you buy me a ticket I would do it again
Yes it may be true that I wear myself thin
But I can still sing to you
Oh, let me sing
Oh, let me sing
Honey let me sing to you
I can't tell you the end with no lies
Don't even know about the end of tonight
If we make it through 'til the morning light
Honey let me sing to you
Oh, let me sing
Oh, let me sing
If you see me cry.
Don't try and dry my eye's.
If you see me down.
Just leave me there to rot.
And if you see my pain.
Don't try and pull me out.
If i run away.
Don't call my name out loud.
Just leave.
If you see my heart.
Leave it on the ground.
If i stumble in the dark.
Let me go untill im found.
If im dying in my bed.
Oh, just let me be alone.
Oh, things that need to be said.
Can be told to my stone.
Leave.
I said Leave
When im lying in my grave.
And the're putting me away.
Ther'll be nothing left to say.
Nothing left to say.
So, Leave.
I said, Leave.
I said, Leave, Me.
come on in out of the cold,
lay your cares on me,
cause when your here there's nothing wrong
you're as far as i can see
you're as far as i can see
just another old love song comin' down
and I've been trying to make you understand
that my love for you is real
and I can feel it when you take my hand
when I'm holding you near
let me hold you near
just another old love song comin' down
just another old love song comin' down
just another old love song comin' down
so if you feel the sun is sinking down
just call out my name
cause i would make this whole world spin around
just to see you again
just to see you again
just to see you again
River girl, she took me in
And I became her new best friend
She would laugh as she filled my glass with wine
She said "well, hold on boy cause we can't stay long
It's bittersweet, this river song"
So I toast to you and I hope your journey's kind
There's a lady, Spanish roses in her hair
And they cover the crown of thorns she wears
And the blood from her lips as she sings
Do it all for the glory of thee
And they carry her down, down, down
Down in the cold, cold, ground
By the river she used to pray
River now she will wait
For the king to come
And the boys who would crave her perfect skin
And she burned herself, she thought it would please him
And the iron chain spiked around her waist
And the poison that she used to hide her face
And they carry her down, down, down
Down in the cold, cold, ground
By the river she used to pray
River now she will wait
For the king to come
And she made a bed of broken glass and stone
She slept at night to prove the faith was strong
And when her broken body finally gave
There grew Spanish roses by her grave
And they carry her down, down, down
Down in the cold, cold, ground
By the river she used to pray
River now she will wait
I walk this brick road
ignroring the busload
the sleepers are down for the count
I'll never forget on the day that we met
last night when we painted the town
we screamed and we ran,
streets of old amsterdam
looking for payphones to call
but none of our loved ones
would quite understand
sometimes we just live for the fall
And I've been to Holland and I've been to New York
and I've seen the Golden Gate Bridge
and I've done the things my parents have dreamed but i
aint never seen nothing like this
She came to LA from the red Georgia clay and i loved
her right from the start
and she took my eye like a thief in the night i know
shes stolen my heart
she knows that i love her she knows that i miss her i
wish she was standing right here
at the end of each day i still lay down and pray just
one chance to see her again
And I've been to Holland and I've been to new york
and I've seen the Golden Gate Bridge
and I've done the things my parents have dreamed but i
aint never seen nothing like this
I look to my right as a aman on a bike says his sons
been riding two days
and if i missed you more i would head for the door but
i cant find the door anyways
I dont the language nor of the anguish that causes me
to ask twice
I dont knwo much but that I love the dutch cuz you dont
have to try and be nice
And i've nbeen to Holland and I've been to new york
and I've seen the Golden Gate Bridge
and I've done the things my parents have dreamed but i
Well, I love the rain the most when it stops
We can see the big white house, yeah, and the docks
And we can jump in the river, don't know if the water
or sky is clearer
But I know that I love the rain the most when it stops
Yeah, when it stops
No more grey today, we gonna celebrate
You know Miss Sunshine, she starts to paint a perfect
picture of this river parade
And I know that I love the rain the most when it stops
Yeah, when it stops
Well, the dark waves, they start singing together
I can't believe this change in the weather
I start to hum a child's rhyme
And all these boats, they start rocking in time, and I
I love the rain the most when it stops
Yes, we love the rain the most when it stops
Yeah when it stops
The summer is coming to an end
We ain't gonna let that slow us down one bit
Til that sunset will start to fade
They're gonna drag us screaming from these old
riverbanks, oh yeah
We love the rain the most when it stops
We love the rain the most when it stops
Yeah, when it stops
Yeah, when it stops
Yeah, when it stops
When it stops, when it stops, when it stops...
Yeah, when it stops
I think you've had a little too much to drink
Let me help with that
Don't forget to tie the boat up
Not that way, no it's a figure eight, yeah
Yeah when it stops...
Where are you going my one true love?
you understand me like no one does
so who's gonna save me now?
yeah, who's gonna save me now?
He said...
Going away love can't you see
I can't take you
and you can't change me
so I'm going to save you now
yes, I'm going to save you now
She said...
Well I got bruises on my feet he says
and I got cuts on my hands
so who's gonna help me stand?
Yeah, who's gonna help me stand?
Well I got wounds that won't heal she says
just as deep and just as long
so I'm going to make you strong
yes, I'm going to make you strong
well I can't sleep at night he says
when those lights go out
well who's gonna show me how?
yeah, who's gonna hold me now?
I have dreams of you she said
I see you hiding your face
So I'm going to make you brave
Yes, I'm going to make you brave
I'm going to save you now
she says,
I'm going to save you now
Yes, I'm going to save you now
I'm going to save me now
She draws a line in the sand with her feet
And there's an old man walking in the middle of the
street
And as the sun goes down, well, she calls me a fool, you
know
'Cause I'm still sitting here in my room
And I peak out my window, or I close my eyes
Saying goodnight to the Westside.
Well, the sun feels warm on my face these days
And I'm slightly removed from the smog of L.A.
But I'm still searching those things I just can't see
Like how a beautiful face can hide her life from me
Take a deep breath as she asks for a ride
Saying goodnight to the Westside
Well, I come home late in the evening time
And I try to ride down to the beach, and I stare up at
the sky
And I lie on the Venice sand
And I think about her, and I think about all of them, all
of them
Sometimes I'm thinking about all of them
And I roll my windows down
And let the air flow all around me
As I start to drive
Say goodnight to the Westside
To the Westside
Oh the weather ain't so fine today
Darling it's just right for me
'Cause I've been thinking of you
Got these far away blues
Oh the water's mad
She's been fighting with the wind
I've been thinkin' of you
Got these far away blues
So please don't take me the wrong way
Things are fine and people are great, but
I've been thinking of you
Got these far away blues
Don't like to think about the way it ends
I like to think I can be a friend
We were heavy on love and heavy on mistakes
I'm so sorry it ended up this way
Will someone paint the ceilings blue
What's a blue sky if I can't have you to hold
One of these stars was faked on
Keep me falling down
Keep me falling down
I play these bars and all I get is grief
Drank too much, I'm heavy on my feet
And I can't remember what my fingers used to do
Stand in the rain too drunk to call you
So I'm falling down
So I'm falling down
Yes I'm falling down
Yes I'm falling down
I saw you falling down
I saw you falling down
Where are you now
Where are you
Heard the radio, it was playing our song
Where you were, I hope you sang along
Used to be warm, you're warming
And I'm falling down
And I'm falling down
Used to have a pretty smile
Where are you now
Where are you now
I don't miss you
I don't miss you
I don't miss you
Do you miss me
Do you miss me
Do you miss me
Oh no
Oh no
Oh no
Out the window
Billy’s been drivin’ all night
He’s got a dream
Wants to live up on the big screen
Well just like Jimmy Dean, he’s got his jacket on
And his hair combed just right
But there’s a hundred just like him in audition lines
tonight
And I wish the walls would come down
I wish the walls would come down
I wish the walls would come down on what’s left of this
faketown
Rosemary’s drivin’ downtown
For something that she heard from some talent scout
And she’s been workin’ all day
So she could pay for those pictures to be done up in
the right way
And it was such a shame when he said that she was just
another pretty face
He said no one ever gets no where
Without shakin’ it here or there
Honey life ain’t fair
I wish the walls would come down
I wish the walls would come down
I wish the walls would come down on what’s left of this
faketown
This faketown
Well you can fix your face
You can fix your hair
You can fix your body with this needle here
And the world can walk around like a pack of wolves
And until you hear you’re good enough
That it ain’t your fault
You say it ain’t your time
You just weren’t cut out for the big time
Why don’t you try to be yourself
Theres things I have there that never sell
And I wish the walls would come down
I wish the walls would come down (x)
I wish the walls would come down on what’s left of this
You say that you ain't been happy
say that you should but you dont know why
just tryin to get to somewhere
just end up getting by
and i give you anything i can think of
give you love but it aint enough
just tell me not to worry bout you
on a train and you wish me luck saying
is it gonna get easier
is it gonna get tough
are the waters gonna open wider
or are they gonna get rough
are we gonna have to sink right now
are we gonna get to paint this town
deep blue and green, the colors of her eyes lookin at
early in the morning
Left the hotel early that morning
Took your hand and we walked all day
and watched all the street performers
In the empty street parade
and we heard that piano playing
London bridge and it made you weep
and we got on the train to Paris
you leaned against me and we fell asleep
is it gonna get easier
is it gonna get tough
are the waters gonna open wider
or are they gonna get rough
I'm gonna have to sink right now
are we gonna get to paint this town
deep blue and green, the colors of her eyes lookin at
early in the morning
I lost you in a storm in Georgia
Called you up on Christmas day
Babe tried hard to get back to you
But you were just to far away
And you told you loved me too
But you thought that our love was wrong
I talked you off the ledge by morning
You caught this train and you headed home
Well I still remember the day that i met you
I still remember the day you left
Still remember the day you came back
Now I remember the things you said
And I remember the days and the good times
And I remember the nights without
I tell you baby when you get back home
We'll catch a train and we're headin South
is it gonna get easier
is it gonna get tough
are the waters gonna open wider
or are they gonna get rough
are we gonna have to sink right now
are we gonna get to paint this town
deep blue and green, the colors of her eyes drawn on me
Pick me up softly, I don't know the shape that I'm in
I dropped through the windows and down through the
buildings
And up to the front door again
There was a gunfight out in the moonlight
To settle the matters at hand
So pick me up stranger, pick me up softly
I don't know the shape that I'm in
And I did my best with my time in the West
And I tried not to leave anyone in distress
And I have stood tall yeah and I never lied
That's a lie
But I surely tried
To do everything I could do right
Pick me up softly, I don't know how much I've been hurt
One bullet missed me, the other one kissed me
And left me to die in the dirt
They killed every last man and shot down my Suzanne
It's over whatever it's worth
So pick me up stranger, pick me up softly
I don't know how much I've been hurt
And I did my best with my time in the West
And I tried not to leave anyone in distress
And I have stood tall yes and I never lied
That's a lie
But I surely tried
To do everything I could do right
Pick me up softly, I don't know long I have left
Oh I am not hurtin', but death is a-certain
There's a bullet that lays in my chest
I'm flooded with memories and people and sweet dreams
And words to my favorite songs
And I'll buy the last round if you lay my head down
Lights from the motor bike
shine through the bars on my face
as i walked through the alley
with a smile and guitar case
and i climb on the stairs
and reflect on the night we spent
and im thinking about what you said
and what it meant
you said, come back down,
come back down, joe
go down to see her in the late afternoon
she ain't easy to find
you know shes always moving
shes kicking back coffee with anthony telling jokes
saying, girl if we don't go soon we're gonna miss the
show
she says, come back down,
come back down, joe
drive down to see if we can get on the list to play
so i go in walking like i own the place
and we wait our turn, yeah, but we dont wait long
me and jenny, we sing our songs in a row
we're on a roll
she says, come back down,
come back down, joe
come back down,
come back down
the scarecrows in full bloom tonight
as they take the stage
we say goodbye to zachari
and we get on our way
and on the way i said tell me a story please
she says did you ever hear the one about the duck
that was lost in the street
says i huffed and i puffed
and i shooed him away
hell, i stopped the sunset in the middle of the day
i watched him grow wings, and fly away
there was come back down,
come back down, joe
the nights almost through
she wants to sing me a song
i love how you sing girl,
but its just a little too long
because theres only four seasons
and this ones almost gone
yeah, these nights feel so good
but this one's almost gone
says, come back down,
come back down joe,
come back down,
come back down,
come back down,
Well the underground is crawling.
Waiting on the train.
Cinderellas high heel shoes got ruined by the rain.
We can ride it out.
We can ride in down town.
Well she tapped me on the shoulder.
She said, lets go inside.
Cause ive been looking all day long for someplace good
to hide.
We can ride it out.
We can ride in down... Town.
Down town.
Its your party have it your way.
Cause im just hitchin' for a ride.
And theres enough water on this rainy day.
(theres enough water)
Cinderella dont you cry.
Oh, don't you cry.
So don't you cry.
(don't you cry)
Yeah, so if you ever need me.
You know i'll be right here.
Waiting on the A train.
I'll be singing to you dear.
I'll be singing, we can ride it out,
We can ride in down town.
I'll be singing, we can ride it out,
We can ride in down town.
I'll be singing, we can ride it out,
We can ride in down town.
Down town.
You and I
We didn't work out
Darling that was only the first round
If it's true love then try, try again
Would you really expect for us to win right away?
You know they say
Catarina won't you come and run with me now?
We don't deserve this
Second chance at this
Step up and take a weekend
Well we could pop a train or a one-way ticket out
We can just get in my piece of shit car and drive all
night 'til the gas runs out
We could stay right here, watch the city cave in
Lick our wounds until they're warm again
And I don't care anymore who sees this mess
'Cuz you're the only one I'm trying to impress here
My dear, Catarina
Won't you come and run with me now?
No, we don't deserve this
Second chance for this
Step up and take a weekend
Step up and take a weekend
You and I, Catarina
Won't you come and run with me now?
No, we don't deserve this
Second chance for this
Step up and take a week
Take it and run with me
Step up and take a weekend
Well I live in the canyon
Where the old coyotes howl
And they come down from the mountains when the dogs
begin to growl
And they meet up in the darkness where they fight until
the death
When the morning sun is rising I will bury who they
left
And oh, they call me Canyon Joe
And I stay in the cabin
Where I work my hands to bleed
Swing the hammer to the nail
And I swing the axe onto the tree
And I once cleared these woods
-yeah there used to be a path
And now the trees have overgrown just to prove that
nothing lasts
And oh, they call me Canyon Joe
The old man went crazy
He lives high up on the ridge
He used to tell me all the stories of the church house
and the bridge
But the bridge, she washed away your sin
The church house- it got burned
'Cause this world has gone angry and some people never
learn
And oh, they call me Canyon Joe
And I once loved a woman
Georgia was her name
And we met out in the foothills of the Ozark Mountain
Range
And we saw the world together
And these sparks that we love most
She still comes to me in dreams
I am still haunted with her ghost
And oh, they call me Canyon Joe
And all my thoughts are heavy
My beard, it has grown long
And I search the face of six-strings for an old
familiar song
But the chords, they all sound foreign like the places
I have been
So I close my eyes to sleep
Tomorrow I will try again
And oh, they call me Canyon Joe
Oh, oh, they call me Canyon Joe
I just can't seem to get it right today
I just can't seem to get it right today
I just can't seem to get it right today
I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh, I guess I'm gonna give up
It's nearly been a year since he's been gone
And we still sing his goodbye songs
Goodness knows she should move on
But she just can't let him go
No, she just can't let him go
I'm sorry if I made you want to cry
I'm sorry if I made you want to cry
You should know, I never meant to hide
I just hate bringing you down
Oh, I just hate bringing you down
I just can't seem to get it right today
I just can't seem to get it right today
I just can't seem to get it right today
I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh, I guess I'm gonna give up
And I dropped my paintbrush in the dirt
Still remember just how much that hurt
I cut my hand and wait for it to work
But I just couldn't bring him back
No, I just couldn't bring him back
I just can't seem to get it right today
Oh, I just can't seem to get it right today
I just can't seem to get it right today
I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh, I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh Lord I said I guess I'm gonna give up
She's walking away.
She's making a stand.
She's moving to a new life,
She's moving with a new man.
But i got news for her, the kind that i can't see.
Cause i came to my senses... just a little too late.
So i watch her drive away...
And i wave goodbye.
And as her tail-lights fade...
Into the night sky.
Say heeeeeey
Don't you leave me in L.A.
Lover please,
Turn that car around and come back home.
New York, is such a beautiful city im sure.
Its just too far from my...
California girl.
She was so sweet.
And she was so kind.
So leave it up to me...
Not to make up my mind.
So i guess she'll be the one
To which no one will ever compare
And i guess she couldn't wait on me.
Forever, Yeah.
So i watch her drive away...
And i wave goodbye.
And as her tail-lights fade...
Into the night sky.
Say heeeeeey
Don't you leave me in L.A.
Alone.
Lover please,
Turn that car around and come back home.
New York, is such a beautiful city im sure.
Its just too far from my...
California girl.
You remember when we used to drive?
With the windows down.
Do you remember how i used to hold you?
When the lights went out?
Do you remember when we looked up at the stars? And
listened to the waves come down?
Remember the good times.
Do you remember the good times?
Do you remember the good times?
Do you remember the good times?
Cause i remember the good times.
We had.
So heeeey, don't you leave me in L.A. Alone.
Lover please, please, please, please, turn your car
around and come back home.
New York, is such a beautiful city im sure.
It's just too far from California.
Just too far from California.
It's a little too far from California for me.
Walk in the morning with worn out shoes
got the rock in the morning with the boggy woogy blues
and its cold on the street and all i can do is grin
I left your house with my hair all a mess
and all i could think of is your blue summer dress
and the way that you kiss me
and the way that your kiss had a way
Oh those good ole days
Back at your house you invite all your kin
they gather round watchin' gone with the wind
grandpa says frankly i dont give a damn if you do
yeah but i knew your mama and i knew your pop
yeah we grew up together down in old arkansas
we used to climb trees and hold hands as we fall in the
lake
Oh those good ole days
Oh those good ole days
Yeah well you used to call me when you couldn't sleep
yeah and i would come over to your front porch and
drink
yeah and you would sit down on the front porch swing
and swing
we'd leave for a weekend and meet on the lawn
yeah me and the boys would start singing some songs
if you drink enough wine yeah you'd sing along as you
swayed
Oh those good ole days
Walk in the morning with worn out shoes
got the rock in the morning with the boggy woogy blues
and its cold on the street and all i can do is grin
I left your house with my hair all a mess
and all i could think of is your blue summer dress
and the way that you kiss me
Well Jamie could get closer if she tried
Sometimes she gets lonesome late at night
She walks the streets where good love has gone bad
She worries for the one she never had
She says, I still got some gently in my bones
Sometimes I just need someone else to know
And I walk until these clothes are soaking through
And I take comfort in these broken town blues
Last time that I saw her we were young
She told me just how restless she'd become
She cut her hair and took a new name
Just goes to show that some things never change
And she said, I still got some point to my step
Sometimes I just need someone in my bed, yeah
And I will toast the dark and dance with worn out shoes
And take comfort in these broken town blues
She said, get back in this city where you belong
Come sing me some of your country boy songs
And tell me all of your secrets, I'll pour you wine
And if it gets late enough, I'll tell you mine
And she said, I still got some crazy in my head
For the most part I ain't got no regrets
So I will walk this rainy city here with you
I looked out my window this morning
and I saw the strangest thing
Everyone was walking on water and dancing in the rain
Oh darlin' I got so jealous
Just wishin' you were here with me
And I saw the prettiest people
They were kissing in the street
They didn't care who was watching
In the middle of the street
Didn't care who was watching
I can see blue in the sky when it's raining
And I can see blue in the sky when it's raining
And I can see blue in the sky when it's raining
Raining on me and I'm waiting on you
Just sitting here watching the weather
And I can feel the air is getting colder
They say sometimes the sunshine of a party
She's the first one to go she doesnt give any warning
She just gets up and goes she doesnt give any warning
I can see blue in the sky when its raining
And I can see blue in the sky when its raining
And I can see blue in the sky when its raining
Raining on me and I'm waiting on you
Oh what would you do if I showed up
At your door just ready to go
Would you send me away
Or would you come out and play
It's just a little bit of rain and I'm leaving today
It's just a little bit of rain and I'm leaving today
'Cause I can see blue in the sky when its raining
And I can see blue in the sky when its raining
And I can see blue in the sky when its raining
Yea, you walk with the sun on your back
with you're clothes soaking through
on a handle of a suitcase that’s broken in two
and a curled (or curdled) cigarette
that you lit, when you threw the captain
yea and he saw you running
but he wouldn't stop the rain
'cause he knew the perfect pictures
were lying underneath the train
yea and he ain't your hero
yea but why should you care?
'cause her memory stills lingers there
and her memory still lingers there
And I've been up so long
And I've been up so long
And I've been up so long that I don't think that I
could get down
No, I don't think that I could get down
Yeah and Valentine woke me with a coffee and a suite
And her long black stockings
And her brown leather boots
And that pen, she writes all the words on the sides of
the pages
Got drowned in the flood
Yea and I asked if she would dance
Down to the station with me
But she couldn't hear the question
From all the music in the street
And I would have asked her again
Yea but I knew she'd be thinking of him
Yea and I knew she'd be thinking of him
And I've been up so long
I've been up so long
I've been up so long that I don't think that I could
get down
No, I don't think that I could get down.
Oh and all of the players,
Snow White, in the show
And the broken beer bottles and my old ragged clothes
That I wore last night, yes and the night before
But I just don't care
No I just don't care anymore
And there ain’t no use in pretending
that you like me if you don't
Because I don't like you
And I can promise that I won't
Ever believe a word that you say
'cause you're a liar, and a phony, and a fake!
No, you're a liar, and a phony, and a fake!
And I've been up so long
And I've been up so long
And I've been up so long that I don't think that I
could get down
No, I don't think that I could get down
No, I don't think that I could get down, down
No, I don't think that I could get down, down
No, I don't think that I could get down, down
Will you stay with me
On the balcony
We'll sink in our seats
As the people all leave
We can hide out as the curtain comes down
And fall asleep to sleeping sounds
When the mornings growing near
We'll see if the coast is clear
Green eyes are better than blue
I ain't trying to be mean I'm just telling the truth
It's enough to make me run away with you
Darling green eyes are better than blue
She says this isn't easy you know
Loving the hands that you ain't supposed to hold
And I'll pray for the days that I won't sleep alone
She says this isn't easy you know
Green eyes are better than blue
I ain't trying to be mean, just telling the truth
It's enough to make me run away with you
Darling green eyes are better than blue
Johnny says don't bring her down
When the pedestal crumbles and falls to the ground
You will wish that you left her the way that you found
Johnny says don't bring her down
Green eyes are better than blue
I ain't trying to be mean, just telling the truth
It's enough to make me run away with you
Darling green eyes are better than blue
Well I saw you in the water last night
You were smiling at me as you slipped out of sight
When I woke from my dream I was screaming for life
'Cause I saw you in the water last night
Green eyes are better than blue
I ain't trying to be mean, just telling the truth
It's enough to make me run away with you
Darling green eyes are better than blue
I said green eyes are better than blue
I said green eyes are better than blue
You were standing tall
In the corner of a light
While everybody talked
I just stared at you
Singin' on and on and on and on
Singin' on and on and on and on
I was moving closer
You pretended not to notice
I was waiting on a sign
Then you looked up and smiled
Singin' on and on and on and on
Singin' on and on and on and on
O Andrea
Oh I think I'm sinking down
O Andrea
Honey, I want you around
And when you turned to me
Your hair fell in your eyes
And I moved it away
And you looked so surprised
Singin' on and on and on and on
Singin' on and on and on and on
And on
And now
You said you loved my charm
And then you took my arm
And then we slipped away to the burgandy rooms
Our old sound music played
Singin' on and on and on and on
Singin' on and on and on and on
Singin' on and on and on and on
Singin' on and on and on and on
O Andrea
Oh I think I'm sinking down
O Andrea
Honey, I want you around
O Andrea
Oh I think I'm sinking down
O Andrea
Honey, I want you around
And you were standing tall
Sitting in a dixon garden.
Wishing that you and i whern't parting
For the last time.
The last time.
And i said,
Why you wanna get married anyway?
That mans got a family.
And then you say,
Couldn't wait on you forever.
Well could i?
I guess not.
Theres an awkward silence for the first time.
In so many years,
As i recall you used to be mine.
And not some property of his.
And i sang.
Ah-La, don't go,
Ah-La, stay.
Ah-La, don't go,
Don't go away...
Maybe i should apologise.
For i treated you so.
And im so sorry that i left you here.
Just wish i could have known.
And you said,
Well you never cared to tell me.
And it's not your fault.
See these things just happen when your dealing with.
The hands on a clock,
Of a woman.
And he treats me fine.
And anyways im getting older,
And she said,
Oh, but i still miss you sometimes.
When the weathers getting colder.
And she sang.
Ah-La, don't go,
Ah-La, stay.
Ah-La, don't go,
Don't go away...
Do we say goodbye?
Or just see you later?
She said,
Don't make me cry.
Cause its enough just to know.
That i won't ever hold you close.
And i won't ever smell your skin.
And i know how im supposed to feel.
but can't we go again singing,
Ah-La, don't go,
Ah-La, stay.
Ah-La, don't go,
Don't go away...
Ah-La, don't go,
Ah-La, stay...
Ah-La, don't go,
Please don't go away.
Don't go away.
Don't go away.
And i said,
Don't go away.
And you said,
Don't go away.
And we sang,
Don't go away...
Oh river, with your water so clear
I can see straight to the bottom where you stand so still
Oh river, with this beauty you found
And you act just like a mirror with your sun sinking down
Yeah, you act just like a mirror with your sun sinking
down
I'm so selfish
Won't you forgive me my haste
But I hope you last forever
At least all of my days
Oh river, with your eyes so green
Well, I think they are the prettiest that I have ever
seen
Oh river, with your waters so calm
And I will not forget you wherever I roam
No, I will not forget you wherever I roam
I'm so selfish
Won't you forgive me my haste
But I hope you last forever
At least all of my days
At least all of my days
So I will drink the whiskey
And you will drink the rain
At least all of my days
At least all of my days
Well I looked out of my window this morning
and I saw the strangest thing
Everyone was walking on water and dancing in the rain
Oh darlin' I got so jealous
Just wishin' you were here with me
And I saw the prettiest people
They were kissing in the street
They didn't care who was watching
In the middle of the street
Didn't care who was watching
Well I can see blue in the sky when it's raining
And I can see blue in the sky when it's raining
And I can see blue in the sky when it's raining
Raining on me and I'm waiting on you
Just sitting here watching the weather
And I can feel the air is getting colder
They say sometimes the sunshine of a party
She's the first one to go she doesnt give any warning
She just gets up and goes she doesnt give any warning
I can see blue in the sky when its raining
And I can see blue in the sky when its raining
And I can see blue in the sky when its raining
Raining on me and I'm waiting on you
Oh, no no no no
Oh what would you do if I showed up
Oh at your doorstep just ready to go
Would you send me away
Or would you come out and play
It's just a little bit of rain and I'm leaving today
It's just a little bit of rain and I'm leaving today
'Cause I can see blue in the sky when its raining
And I can see blue in the sky when its raining
And I can see blue in the sky when its raining
Raining on me and I'm waiting on you
Oh I can see blue in the sky when it's raining
Oh I can see blue in the sky when it's raining
Oh I can see blue in the sky when it's raining
Raining on me and I'm waiting on you
Oh I can see you, no I can see you
Oh I can see you, no I can see you
Oh I can see you, no I can see you
Oh I can see you you you you.
And I can see blue in the sky when it's raining
And I can see blue in the sky when it's raining
And I can see you in my eyes when it's raining
I'm leaving this morning
I'll call when I can
I'm going fishing on the Rio Grand
Tell'em all I love'em
I don't care what they say
cuz I'm gonna catch me a goldfish today
and I'm gonna catch me some quiet today
I went by the circus but the doors were all closed
and the kids were all screaming wanna see the big show
and the clown he'd grown tired and his clothes were worm thin
He said I don't care if I ever see this big top again
He says I don't mind if I never see the big top again
I went by the church and I saw the white veil
and I remember the letter that you sent in the mail
and I wish you the best with your new fancy life
with your shiny black car and rich man by your side
with your shiny black car and rich man by your side
I'm leaving this morning
I'll call when I can
I'm going fishing on the Rio Grand
Tell'em all I love'em
I don't care what they say
cuz I'm gonna catch me a goldfish today
I'm gonna catch me a goldfish today
I packed all my things, and it didn't take long
I remember what you looked like when you were young
And I wanted to see you, but I knew it was wrong
So I stayed up all night drinking and singing another song (?)
So I stayed up all night drinking and singing your songs (?)
I'm leaving this morning
I'll call when I can
I'm going fishing on the Rio Grand
Tell'em all I love'em
I don't care what they say
cuz I'm gonna catch me a goldfish today
I'm gonna catch me a goldfish today
Mama was callin but I couldn't answer,
I had a dog in the car had a dog in my hands
and I was walkin in these worn out shoes
When I tripped over Charlie and i hit the grass,
I was comin up runnin I was comin up fast
But he beat me I was runnin for the door
No Sally dont get down, cuz I've been lookin all over town
for a brand new set of wings for you, a brand new set of wings for you
Now i'm back in the house bang my head against the wall,
yeah Charlie's still laughin bout watchin me fall
I say Charlie now whats the big idea
I'm back in my room just packin my bags
Thinkin November bout the time that we had just walkin by the stone walls
No Sally don't get down, cuz I've been lookin all over town
for a brand new set of wings for you, for a brand new set of wings for you
Yeah for you
Oh I'm gonna go get a ticket
gonna get on a plane
tell that pilot take me so far away
so i can call you up and say I miss you like a fool
Yeah but you don't put me down you don't treat me bad
Say i understand about the problems i have
but sometimes i know you still wonder
Sally don't get down, cuz I've been lookin all over town
for a brand new set of wings for you, for a brand new set of wings for you
yeah for you
Yeah got held up in Paris caught smoking on a train
if you aint got your papers gonna get you detained
don't believe me I got the photographs to prove it
And you should have seen the look on the old mans face
when the police threatened to haul him away
You know he was so scared, it was also kinda funny
Sally don't get down, cuz I've been lookin all over town
for a brand new set of wings for you, a brand new set of wings for you
yeah for you
And I cant sleep at night cant wake in the day
got these guitars that got so much to say
but no time or energy to say it
yeah we can still walk in the park there aint nobody there
there's a calm in the trees and a cool in there air
its warm but i found it kind of soothing
in a couple of months when the leaves turn green
when the seasons change when the bird sings
I'm gonna grab you up and I'm taking you for good
yes and we'll walk by the river most every single day
and we'll eat our dinner where the tourists play
yeah the city's old but it never seems to get tired
No Sally don't get down, cuz I've been lookin all over town
mama where you going
with that guitar in your hand
yeah, mama where you going
with that guitar in your hand
if lookin good was wrong
id have to shoot you where you stand
i can see you coming
from a million miles away
yea and i can see you coming
from a million miles away
and if i was a blind man i could
feel the changing of the day
i bought you that old guitar
just hopin you might sing
i bought you that old guitar
just a hoping you might sing
well you took that old guitar
but you left your diamond ring
and i treat you like a princess
but you keep one foot out the door
i treat you like a pirincess
but you keep one foot out the door
but if i beat you everyday
you know you would just cry and beg for more
im going back the the country
it dont matter what you say
im going back to the country
it dont matter what you say
thos autumn leaves still falling
the blue grass music plays
im cashin in my hand boys
take my money because i fold
im cashin in my hand
take my money because i fold
cause i miss my family
I got troubles Lord, but, not today
'Cause they gonna wash away,
They're gonna wash away.
And I have sins Lord, but not today
'Cause they gonna wash away,
They're gonna wash away.
And I have friends Lord, but not today
'Cause they done washed away,
They done washed away.
Oh, I've been cryin'
And oh, I've been cryin'
And oh, no more cryin'
And oh, no more cryin' here.
We get lonely love but, not today
'Cause we gonna wash away,
we gonna wash away.
And I got troubles Lord, but not today
'Cause they're gonna wash away,
Mother come quick the doctor is sick lying there on the street
Circus Performers they all tried to warn us of the blistering heat
And there aint no water so what is the bother with trying to drink
What's the new plan when your medicine man has gone too dead to think
And I saw you looking out, I saw you looking at me (repeat)
And that white picket fence that you had as a kid
It aint white anymore and the wood has gone bad
The streets are all empty, the stores have been picked clean, and the lights are all out
the doors are all closed, and the windows all broken, and the buildings torn down
And the dogs own the night but they all lost their bite and they're too tired to growl
We tried throwing stones but you can't stop the moans of that hovering crowd
I saw you crying out, I saw you crying at night (repeat)
And that white picket fence that you used to have
It aint white anymore and the paint has gone bad
Well the drugs have worn off and there's blood in your cough and your starting to turn
And the angels will rise as we blankly stare at their growing concern
And the preacher still preaches from outside the steeple saying when will they learn
But the congregations gone they're on the church lawn and they're watching it burn
I saw you screaming out, I saw you screaming out (repeat)
And that white picket fence that you had when you were young
It aint white anymore and the damage has been done
You're too sick to scream and the last of your dreams they got taken last night
And they're growing impatient now all of the nations are starting to fight
And the mothers are crying, the children are dying, and you're losing your sight
Yeah and it won't be long now, we'll all be gone, walking into the light
I saw you reaching out, I saw you reaching for me (repeat)
And that white picket fence that you had as a kid
Brooklyn, I'm calling to tell you I'm sorry
I know that don't mean much now
You were young and I was wrong
And I know this is just a song
I ain't askin' for another go 'round
I just thought maybe you'd forgive me somehow
Andrea you said that I can't commit
You told me to look for Georgia
And that's what I did
Honey you deserve a star, because that's exactly what you are
And I hope your new lover is true
'cause those sad eyes, they weren't made for you
And oh, sweet Tess, I wish you the best
With your debutante and your suitors
At the circus of your past
Oh honey it was you to bring me my first tune
And I thank you from the bottom of my heart
Even though you were doomed from the start
Yet of all my friends, you stick by me again
And you say you'd ride this rusty train 'til it ends
Yeah because I've been around the world
Just singing about a girl
Never once, did you call me a fool
I hope some day, to make it up to you
To my mother, to my father, to my sister back home
And you know I want to tell you, of those things that I've done
Oh and I've not forgotten
Yes and I think about you often
You say that you're proud every step of the way
And you know, it keeps me going these days
Oh my Sally, I hold you so high
I can't find the words, though I've tried and tried
And sometimes, you're crazy
And sometimes, you've saved me
Wouldn't have had it any other way
Elizabeth,
She'd shoot the junk.
She aint around no more.
She missed the show.
Face down on the floor.
And a hell of a way to go.
Well she aint around no more.
Well your daddy was nice,
To you most of the time.
Except for the days with a cane.
And there was so much dust,
That his heart did bust.
What a hell of a price to pay.
And he ain't here today.
Dont go down.
Dont go blue.
Dont go down, blue.
Cause that wood box,
It weren't made for you.
Well that wood box,
It weren't made for you.
Well your got your thrills.
And you got your pills.
And you cut your hands with a blade.
Yeah but what would you do,
If that sun shone through?
Would you cower and run away?
And oh how you loved it,
When it rained all day.
Dont go down.
Dont go blue.
Dont go down, blue.
Cause that wood box,
It weren't made for you.
Well that wood box,
It weren't made for you.
Cause that wood box,
It weren't made for you.
Cause that wood box,
It weren't made for you.
You and Jesus were close, yeah, at least as far as he knows. And you used to sell tickets, invite all your friends, saying "walk on that water again". Yeah, walk on that water again.
And I'm so good at telling the truth, yeah, unless I don't tell you nothing at all.
Instead of running out scared ain't no kind of excuse. I know it was hard, but you still should have called. I know it was hard, but you still should have called.
It's good and you should. And I know you could if only you would.
And it's good and you know you should. And I know you could if only you would.
You wanted so bad for the rain, yeah, but I wasn't king of those things. So I held up the hose as you stripped off your clothes and danced naked on the tips of your toes. You d-d-danced naked on the tips of your toes.
It's good and you should. And I know you could if only you would.
And it's good and you know you should. And I know you could if only you would.
Mona, you know you wander
on the street corner
I should have warned you
all of the boys
with all of their poison
they'll rob you blind
and i knew your mother
god rest her soul
where was your father?
Yeah well nobody knows
i wish things were different
the hand you were given
it just don't seem fair
and you play with what you're given
you're doing fine
you try not to think about it
well most of the time
you just do what you have to
to make sure you get through
yeah but sometimes it hurts
singing Mona, you know you wander
on the street corner
I should have warned you
all of the boys
with all of their poison
as they make their way
yeah to San Jose
yeah well you're still so young
yeah but you feel so old
it's just that the things you've been through
that are making you cold
well I think you're gonna turn soon
gotta careful with my moves
just might lose you for good
yeah and I can't fight your demons
yeah cuz i'd have to fight you
they're so far inside you
and I just can't seem to get through
and it ain't none of my business
ain't none of my place
yeah but i still had to try
singing Mona, you know you gonna
on the street corner
I should have warned you
all of the boys
with all of their poison
as they make they're way
yeah to San Jose
oh now and i think i've lost you
can't reach you no more
cause you're high as a kite
and i'm down here on the floor
yah i'm begging you to come back down
but you can't even hear that
it's floated away
oh yeah it's such a shame
cause i remember the days
of the sunshine and rain
yeah when we used to play
on your mother's front lawn
singing those old songs
without a care in the world
oh i'm just singing
Mona
you know you wander
on the street corner
I know you're gonna offer
all of the boys and
all of their poison
they make their way
yeah to San Jose darling
yeah to San Jose now
Yeah Mona
you know you're gonna
The neighbors, are talking
And Charlie, is barkin'
Then the rain came, on a calm dawn
And we slept, through the morning
And you said, sometimes, I wish the sun didn't come out at all
Yeah you said, sometimes, I wish the sun didn't come out at all
Just the good days
Just the good days
Oh yeah and later on, we took a southbound train
Yeah and it was cold out, yeah it was freezing down rain
Yeah and it'll let up, if we all screamed for the change
Yeah but you just stood there, and you started to shake
Then you said, sometimes, I wish the sun didn't come out at all
Yeah you said, sometimes, I wish the sun didn't come out at all
No, no just the good days
No, no just the good days
Yeah, yeah just the good days
Yeah, yeah, yeah just the good days
You lit a cigarette
And you got out of bed
And you stood on the balcony there with your feet wet
I begged you to come in, out of the cold night
You said it ain't the dark that I'm afraid of, it's the light
Said it ain't the dark that I'm afraid of, it's the light
Said it ain't the dark that I'm afraid of, it's the light
Said it ain't the dark that I'm afraid of, it's the light
And you said, sometimes, I wish the sun wouldn't come out at all
And you said, sometimes, I wish the sun wouldn't come out at all, at all
No, just the good days
Oh, just the good days
No, no, no just the good days
No, no, no just the good days
No, no, no just the good days
No, no, no just the good days
No, no, no just the good days
The sun is sinking low
The hour is getting late
You need something that I can't live without
But I'll give it anyways
You're really in trouble this time
You've no one left to blame
They pushed you down and you called me names
But I loved you just the same
Wont you take my blanket and go
Wont you take my blanket and go
Wont you take my blanket and go
Ease you troubled soul
Warm your weary bones
Yeah, what else you do now
You got nothing, you got nothing at all
I threw you rope, you grabbed, it broke
I got nothing else in my hands
Wont you take my blanket and go
Wont you take my blanket and go
Wont you take my blanket and go
Ease you troubled soul
I got troubles oh, but not today
Cause they're gonna wash away
They're gonna wash away
And I have sins Lord, but not today
Cause they're gonna wash away
They're gonna wash away
And I had friends oh, but not today
Cause they're done washed away
They're done washed away
And oh, I've been cryin'
And oh, I've been cryin'
And oh, no more cryin'
No, no more cryin' here
We get along Lord, but not today
Cause we gonna wash away
We gonna wash away
And I got troubles oh, but not today
Cause they gonna wash away
