CERES VET Programs

CERES is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO TOID 3686) and offers Certificate II in Horticulture (AHC20410) and Certificate II in Kitchen Operations (SIT20312) as part of the Vocational Education and Training (VET) program. Training programs are available for the full school year and are tailored to suit the needs of individual students and schools. Courses are held between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

Cert II in Horticulture (AHC20410)

Completing Cert II in Horticulture at CERES Community Environment Park provides students with a range of skills that are transferable to a career in horticulture. Students may be involved in propagation, planting and pruning trees and shrubs, landscaping and building, using a chainsaw, plant and weed identification, laying irrigation systems, harvesting plants, working in the industry and applying environmentally sustainable work practices. This course is perfect for students who enjoy working in the outdoors. It can be an introduction to a career, further study or apprenticeship in gardening, vegetation management and restoration, landscaping, parks and gardens management, nurseries and propagation. CERES Community Environment Park, a 4.5 hectare farm in East Brunswick, provides the perfect outdoor classroom for a hands-on, immersion learning experience. Our Honey Lane Organic Market Garden, Propagation Area, Permaculture and Bushfood Nursery and extensive productive site provides a unique learnscape for students. Horticulture students are involved in the full garden cycle from planting the seed to harvesting the crops and building and landscaping projects.

As part of the course enrolment process we provide a short Literacy & Numeracy test to determine any support needs and this will be sent to you.  If you do not wish to undertake this you may sign a waiver.

CERES Horticulture can come to you!
Schools can have training in their school ground where CERES can help to create a kitchen garden or indigenous oasis at your school linked to completing their certificate.

Hands on Horticulture Non-accredited Training

CERES also provides non-accredited training for groups. Ask about horticulture programs for Year 7-10 that can be run at CERES and at your school. Minimum program duration of 1 term.

To gain a Certificate II in Horticulture students must complete a total of fifteen units comprising of the two core units, a minimum of ten electives from units 3 – 15 and a maximum of three from another certificate (units 16 – 18 are from AHC20310 Certificate II in Production Horticulture). 

The suggested nominal hours for the completion of Certificate II in Horticulture are between 290 –730.  Contact hours will vary from group to group depending on length of program, learning ability, scheduling and independent learning.

For School Groups > School groups can enrol in the complete Certificate II in Kitchen Operations which can be completed over 2 years, 1 session per week. Training programs are run Monday to Friday 9 – 5pm.

We can tailor the program to each group’s needs. Non-accredited training or partial completion of the Certificate II in Horticulture is available groups.

VETiS Wednesday Enrollments > Wednesday 1:30 – 5pm February to December 2017

Individual enrollment for Youth (early school leavers) and Adults

VETiS Cert II in Horticulture –  Young Adults (18-25) – ($1200pp in 2017)

Wednesday Classes – 1:30 – 5pm, Full Certificate is achieved over 2 years.

Cert II in Kitchen Operations (SIT20312)

Completing Cert II in Kitchen Operations at CERES Community Environment Park provides students with a range of skills that are transferable to a career in hospitality. Hospitality students learn kitchen skills whilst preparing freshly harvested produce from our gardens and locally sourced organic produce from our own Market and Grocery. After their hard work in the kitchen students get to enjoy their own cooking and celebrate newly developed skills over shared meals.

CERES Community Kitchen, our hospitality classroom, is a registered commercial kitchen with green technology and sustainable design. Students participate in a range of projects and activities across the CERES site including: Enterprise activities, Pop-Up Restaurants/ Cafes, Cooking and Service.

CERES runs courses for school groups between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday, with most courses running from 9am until 4pm.  CERES courses cater for mixed abilities and can be tailored to the learning needs of the group.
School groups are subject to a per session cost. Please refer to our fee schedule below for school costings.

CERES is running Cert II in Horticulture on Wednesday afternoons 1:45 – 4:45pm in 2016. This is for students wanting to complete the full certificate over 2 years or Units 1 & 2 over 1 year. Prices are subject to per student per year cost. See qualifications below for more details.
At the completion of the training program, students will receive either a Statement of Attainment or a completed Certificate II in Horticulture/Hospitality.
- A Statement of Attainment program is anticipated to be completed over 12 months, this will vary depending on the units selected.
- A Certificate program is anticipated to be completed over 2 years.

 Students may be required to complete homework and assessment activities outside of nominated contact hours, to ensure adequate completion of all curriculum activities. This will be negotiated between CERES Training and participating school/organisation support teachers. Regular attendance is required if competency is to be achieved.

VETiS Cert II in Horticulture –  Young Adults (18-25) – ($1200pp in 2017)

Wednesday Classes – 1:30 – 5pm, Full Certificate is achieved over 2 years.
