Leonard Cohen

A: Suzanne
B: So Long, Marianne
RIP Mr Cohen, This single, Bird On a Wire and others were an essential part of my youth.
As far as i'm concerned the man was a legend, i think he was a bit like Marmite, you loved him or you hated him. Cause of death as yet unknown but i'm sure it will come out soon. Another sad day for music.

I loved 10cc but thought this was utter bilge, especially for a debut.

Paul Rodgers is a great singer but I must say this song never did anything for me, even as a child I remember my dad always had it on in the car and I just found it rather dull and mediocre.

Black Sabbath's Paranoid from the same year despite equally mass overkill on the other hand is far more exciting and never tire of it - especially that intro.

I remember going round my friends house and his older brother had just bought this on lilac vinyl and he played it on his record player and I was instantly hooked and mesmerised as this was the first time I had seen coloured vinyl.

Oh, the innocence of childhood.

demand, supply, reputation & kudos make records are what worth any amount, high or low

a buyer of this at top price will have known it 30+ years & it'll be a high point of a collection

wanting it for 50c may happen, but you're not the end owner.

the UK exports are listed as UK exports & USA issues at random, depending on who added it

to me they are UK copies so I'd want to know a UK copy existed

Thanks, Phil. I thought it was an export pressing, because it looks like Decca singles looked when they were issued on London in the U.S.

Pressed for US release, as were many thousands of US London releases. The London label was set up in the US and Canada by British Decca in 1947/48 because they no longer had the right to their own name, having sold off their US company during WW2.

A: I Want To Break Free
B: Machines (Or Back To Humans)
The few pressings I come across locally usually look identical unless there has been a change in label design which is rare. The number of variations of this one is unusual. The red/white version would have been the first pressing get-up. I WANT TO BREAK FREE first charted in the UK on 14 April 1984 and the chart entry date in Zimbabwe was 11 August 1984. Various global pop chart peaks for the song:

#1 - Holland, South Africa
#2 - Switzerland
#3 - UK
#4 - Germany
#6 - New Zealand
#8 - Australia
#9 - Zimbabwe, France
#45 - USA (Billboard)
#53 - USA (Cashbox).

Certainly nothing to write home about, what make it worth that kind of money? There MUST be SOMETHING to it, scarcity, contains very collectible band members, written by a collectible writer, collectible producer, etc.? If I saw it in a pile of records, I'd never give it a second look, except for the Delta numbers. I've been toying with the idea of collecting Dore singles because they are quite enigmatic: so very many sides attributed to many different artists and showing up on so many different flips, it'd be like a puzzle trying to figure out what goes where! But, I certainly wouldn't pay more than a quarter, maybe 50 cents, for this just to fill a slot in the numbers run. It's fairly familiar to me, for some reason, for all I know, I may have seen it a number of times in thrift stores!!

If this was a British pressing (but wasn't Mantovani on Decca in the UK back then?) it must have been one of the very earliest British 45 rpm pressings and consequently must be pretty rare by now. Maybe it was pressed for export only.

The Virgil Brothers

A: Temptation 'Bout To Get Me
B: Look Away
The Knight Brothers' original soul version was released on Chess in Oz in 1965 and it probably sold a hundred copies, with zero airplay. Nothing against the Virgils but that's the way it was in Oz in the sixties - we need a song with a hook for our local group, so look for something that's been on the American R&B charts in the past and we'll cover it.

Leonard Cohen

A: Suzanne
B: Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye
Earlier this year I set about an almost monumental task. Being a lifelong music lover, I decided I would compose a list of songs that changed my life, and it became four lists here on 45 cat. I broke them up chronologically 1955-1963, 1964-1969 (link below), the 70s, the 80s, and the 90s until present.

Suzanne and Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye were both included in the 1964-1969 list. I played them earlier tonight and it, as always, took me back to a time when our country was in turmoil and I was a confused, anxious youth. Here is my commentary about their inclusion on my list:

"One of the songs that changed my life the most. 1968 began quietly but the changes in the nation brought the changes in me. Martin Luther King, Jr., Bobby Kennedy, the Democratic Convention. It changed the way I thought and changed my goals in life. Suzanne and the entire Leonard Cohen lp is my most listened to lp in 1968, and the songs brought comfort to me and my friends during that time.. The background singers must be angels from another universe. "and you know that she will trust you...for you've touched her perfect body with your mind." "

Later this evening, I learned about the passing of Leonard Cohen. I made me very sad and it made me continue to realize his importance in this world, and how very deeply he touched us with his words and his music. RIP Leonard
