Forced migration (also called deracination — originally a French word meaning uprooting) refers to the coerced movement of a person or persons away from their home or home region. Migrating in the same country means the person is an Internally Displaced Person (or IDP). It often connotes violent coercion, and is used interchangeably with the terms "displacement" or forced displacement. According to Speare, "In the strictest sense migration can be considered to be involuntary only when a person is physically transported from a country and has no opportunity to escape from those transporting him. Movement under threat, even the immediate threat to life, contains a voluntary element, as long as there is an option to escape to another part of the country, go into hiding or to remain and hope to avoid persecution." However this thought has been questioned, especially by Marxians, who argue that in most cases migrants have little or no choice. A specific form of forced migration is population transfer, which is a coherent policy to move unwanted persons, perhaps as an attempt at "ethnic cleansing". Someone who has experienced forced migration is a "forced migrant" or "displaced person". Less formally, such a person may be referred to as a refugee, although that term has a specific narrower legal definition.
Forced is a single-player and co-op action role-playing game developed by BetaDwarf Entertainment, released in October 2013 for Windows, OS X and Linux through the Steam platform as well as Wii U. It is about gladiators fighting for their freedom in a fantasy arena and are assisted by a spirit-like character called Balfus. Gameplay consists of selecting a weapon class and abilities to combat the various enemies of each arena, while solving puzzles using the help of Balfus. BetaDwarf was formed by a small group of students in 2011, who began developing the game in an unused classroom in Aalborg University – Copenhagen, Denmark. They were removed months later and launched a successful Kickstarter campaign involving an Imgur picture which documented their progress. Forced received moderate to favorable reviews with most critics praising its competitive gameplay and puzzle-system. The game's weak plot, technical glitches and excess difficulty were the negative highlights. It won the Level Up 2013 Intel award and BetaDwarf received the Danish Developer Of The Year (2013) for it.
This year's World Disasters Report is focused on forced migration. More than 70 million people are classified as forced migrants -- forced to flee their homes because of factors that include conflict, persecution, disasters and even development. This is not a new issue for the Red Cross Red Crescent. Around the world, many National Societies work with forced migrants, either as they flee to camps or cities, or when they arrive in new countries, seeking refuge and hope. As a Movement, we have also worked closely with governments to ensure that they treat migrants with respect and dignity, and to make sure that our volunteers can always reach migrants to provide them with the support they need.
51 million people worldwide forced to flee their homes in order to survive. #MillionSteps is the name of the campaign launched by MSF to alert public opinion to the fate of these people. This is an unprecedented, worldwide phenomenon. Rarely have there been as many serious and protracted conflicts and crises forcing countless people to flee… whether it be from Central African Republic, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, Libya or Iraq… Loris de Filippi, president of MSF Italy - "In the countries where we work, we have never witnessed so many refugees or displaced people, people forced to flee. And we’re seeing that the amount of work to be done is enormous." The vast majority are either displaced within their own countries, or are seeking refuge in a neighbouring count...

The question of forced migrations lies at the heart of many of the bloodiest modern histories, including the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Yet studies of forced migrations are typically treated as singular cases, rather than through comparison. This panel places the Palestinian-Israeli case in broader context through a discussion of four case studies: the Greek-Turkish “population exchange” following the Great War; displaced persons following the Second World War; the expulsion and flight of Palestinians during the 1948 War; and the mass flight of Iraqi Jews to Israel in the early 1950s. Underlying questions of this panel include: how do we define “forced migration”? What is the relationship between force and fear? Must a “forced migration” be the result of a conscious plan on the part ...

Many Quakers have been increasingly concerned about the response of European governments and European-level institutions to the arrival of people seeking safety on our continent. This video draws attention to two characteristics of the European policies, militarised responses and externalised responses. On 4 February 2017 QCEA's Andrew Lane spoke to participants at the Forced Migration conference, organised by the Quaker Asylum and Refugee Network (www.qarn.org.uk), with the support of QCEA, Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre and Quaker Peace and Social Witness.
