Purchase options and add-ons

Sir Michael Parkinson interviewed Muhammad Ali four times and in this memoir you are given a ringside seat for all of the interviews.

Muhammad Ali was God's Gift to the interviewer. Funny, articulate, outspoken with a fascinating life story, unparalleled talent and controversial views. These 4 interviews charted Ali's life, revealing significant phases at different times, charting the rise and fall of this kaleidoscope of a man.

In Muhammad Ali: A Memoir Sir Michael Parkinson will bring his award-winning journalistic talents to bear on this extraordinary man. The book will mix personal recollections of the times they met with selected transcripts of the famous and, in the case of the 1974 meeting, infamous interviews all brought together and contextualised by a sober and honest assessment of the life and times of a figure that, it is certain, we will never see the like of again.

Muhammad Ali: A Memoir is a fresh, revealing and personal account of the life of the most important and enduring cultural figures of our age.

Product description

Review

Every time they met, Parky found Ali the perfect interviewee - funny, articulate and not afraid to share his controversial views - a far cry from today's media trained 'celebrities'. This wonderful book mixes Parky's recollections with transcripts of the interviews. It makes for a riveting read about an amazing man. ― The Sun

Like most of us, I never met 'the greatest', but I lived in a time when he was not just a boxer but a global, sporting superstar. We were in awe of him. The fights, the interviews, the headlines! I don't know whether Parky (the best interviewer of his time) has come close to capturing the essence of the man, but he has given us a fascinating view behind the scenes of the life we observed from afar. MP got a bit closer than we did, so his insights are really interesting, delivered by a true journalist who, like us, admired and even loved the man and the superstar. The detached views of his links with Islam may well be relevant to our understanding of some of the views of young Muslims today. A brilliant book that I couldn't leave alone.

I have read Remnick's book and others, I have read numerous articles on the Greatest. This book is probably one of the most lucid and free flowing of them all. It is a quick read, took me a few hours to finish, and tells you a lot about the Legend. Recommended.

Purchased as a gift and I'm sure that it will be met with the joy of having watched the original interviews of the legend by the legend.

Ok, but the interviews themselves are the least good part of the book. Parky's context is better. Very slight and a mighty quick read!

Initially a little too reliant on other books for background (especially the excellent "King of the World"), but the insight into how the interviews were set-up and the transcripts of the interviews themselves are fascinating and a reminder of the flawed, fascinating and larger than life one-off that was Muhammad Ali.
