Michael Gordon "Mike" Oldfield (born 15 May 1953) is an English musician and composer. His work blends progressive rock with world, folk, classical, electronic, ambient, and new-age music. He is best known for his 1973 album Tubular Bells – which launched Virgin Records and became a hit after its opening was used as the theme for the film The Exorcist – and for his 1983 hit single "Moonlight Shadow". He is also known for his rendition of the Christmas piece "In Dulci Jubilo".
Oldfield has released more than 20 albums with the most recent being a rock album titled Man on the Rocks, released in 2014.
Mike Oldfield's parents are Raymond Oldfield, a general practitioner, and Maureen Liston, an Irish nurse. His sister Sally and brother Terry are also successful musicians and have appeared on several of Mike's albums. He also had a younger brother, David, who had Down's syndrome and died in infancy.
Oldfield was born in the Battle Hospital in Reading, Berkshire, and he attended St. Joseph's Convent School, Highlands Junior School, St. Edward's preparatory school, and Presentation College in Reading. When he was 13, he moved with his parents to Harold Wood in Essex and attended Hornchurch Grammar School, where, having already begun his career in music, he took just one GCE examination, in English.
Tubular Bells is the debut record album of English musician Mike Oldfield, recorded when he was 19 and released in 1973.
It was the first album released by Virgin Records and an early cornerstone of the company's success. Vivian Stanshall provided the voice of the "Master of Ceremonies" who reads off the list of instruments at the end of the first movement. The opening piano solo was used briefly in the soundtrack to the William Friedkin film The Exorcist (released the same year), and the album gained considerable airplay because of the film's success.
The following year the piece was orchestrated by David Bedford for The Orchestral Tubular Bells version. It had three sequels in the 1990s, Tubular Bells II (1992), Tubular Bells III (1998) and The Millennium Bell (1999). Finally, the album was re-recorded as Tubular Bells 2003 at its 30th anniversary in 2003. A newly mixed and mastered re-issue of the original album appeared in 2009 on Mercury Records, with bonus material.
For the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics, Oldfield rearranged segments from Tubular Bells for a segment about the National Health Service. This rendition appears on the soundtrack album, Isles of Wonder, and is included on the official BBC DVD release.
Tubular Bells III is the 18th album by Mike Oldfield, released in 1998 by Warner Bros. Records. A sequel to Oldfield's 1973 Tubular Bells and his 1992 Tubular Bells II albums, it was released on the 25th anniversary of the first Tubular Bells album.
Oldfield created the album while living in Ibiza, and has said the inspiration for some of its electronic elements came from the styles of music played at the island's bars and clubs.
Unlike Oldfield's two prior Tubular Bells albums, Tubular Bells III does not follow the pattern of pieces from the original two parts, but instead references some of the music from the albums in the series. For example, "The Source of Secrets" references the "Introduction" section of the original album, and "Far Above the Clouds" references the "Finale" section of "Tubular Bells (Part One)".
All tracks by Mike Oldfield.
Mike is an abbreviation or shorthand for Michael.

Tubular bells (also known as chimes) are musical instruments in the percussion family. Their sound resembles that of church bells; the original tubular bells were made to duplicate the sound of church bells within an ensemble. Each bell is a metal tube, 30–38 mm (1¼–1½ inches) in diameter, tuned by altering its length. Its standard range is from C4-F5, though many professional instruments reach G5 (see photo). Tubular bells are often replaced by studio chimes, which are a smaller and usually less expensive instrument. Studio chimes are similar in appearance to tubular bells, but each bell has a smaller diameter than the corresponding bell on tubular bells.
Tubular bells are sometimes struck on the top edge of the tube with a rawhide- or plastic-headed hammer. Often, a sustain pedal will be attached to allow extended ringing of the bells. They can also be bowed at the bottom of the tube to produce a very loud, very high-pitched overtone.
The tubes used provide a purer tone than solid cylindrical chimes, such as those on a mark tree.

Mike Oldfield took the world of music by storm at the age of 19 in 1973 with the release of his debut album "Tubular Bells", which hit the No.1 spot in numerous countries and has gone on to sell in excess of 16 million copies worldwide. A naturally shy man it was not until the end of the decade that he began to play live on a regular basis. In 1981, by now a confident stage performer, he embarked on his European Adventure Tour which took in the Montreux Festival in July, where he performed in front of an enthusiastic sold out audience. " Yeah.. it happened to me many times also.. and videos like this are the result :)) I have no intention to brake any coppyright, this is an extended version made by me of the original song of Mike Oldfield named The Song Of The Sun, i did this because the original song was far too short, i like it so much, and i think i am not the only one! All my respect to Mike Oldfield, a great artist!

Join yours truly and Mike Oldfield for the first in our turning back the clock series, where we take a trip down memory lane with a colourful character from Virgin's past and present. It was delightful travelling to the Bahamas to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Tubular Bells with Mike Oldfield. After a special version of Tubular Bells at his kids' school we went back to his home and over a bottle of wine, or two, or three, reminisced about the past. Mike reminded me how he became the first artist on our new record label and I pondered whether, without Tubular Bells, would Virgin Galactic be taking people up into space this year? It was a real Sliding Doors moment -- if he hadn't left his demo tape with us and we hadn't listened to it, how different our paths might have been. We al...

Silence in the air.
Is anybody there?
Searching every sound.
Walking on quiet ground
[ Chorus ]
Somebody's out to get you!
Hiding in shadows - poison arrows.
Somebody's out to break you!
Hiding in narrows - Poison arrows
When you gonna break?
Watching every move you make
And everything you do,
Evil eyes'll be on you.
[ Repeat Chorus ]
Don't give in, don't come any closer,
No sir!
Keep running, coming in closer,
Closer.
Don't give in, don't come any closer,
No sir!
Keep running, coming in closer,
Closer.
What you gonna do?
Time is running out on you.
Anywhere you choose,
Anyway, you're gonna lose.
[ Repeat Chorus ]
[ Repeat Chorus ]
Sombody's out to get you.
