Australia's first minister for the prevention of family violence, Northcote Labor MP Fiona Richardson, has died after a battle with cancer.

Labor sources confirmed Ms Richardson's passing to Fairfax Media on Wednesday night.

Ms Richardson announced on Tuesday she was taking more time off after being diagnosed with multiple tumours, but she passed away on Wednesday night.

She successfully battled cancer in 2013 and returned to parliament to become Victoria's first minister for the prevention of family violence.

Ms Richardson announced on Monday she was taking more time off after being diagnosed with multiple tumours.

She said she had intended to return to work part-time but her recovery was not progressing as planned.

"In light of my health challenges, I have made the decision not to recontest the seat of Northcote in 2018," she said. "I would ask for privacy for my family and I at this time."

The 51-year-old mother of two was first elected to parliament in 2006, but took time off  in 2013 after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Last year, she revealed her own childhood experience with family violence on ABC TV's Australian Story ahead of the release of findings from the government's historic Royal Commission.

"There's no doubt trawling through the past is very challenging for me and also incredibly sad," Ms Richardson told Australian Story.

"These are the people that I most love in this world, and talking about those experiences at times can be tough.

"But it has given me this unique insight into victims of family violence, particularly childhood victims of family violence, who are so often lost in our response to family violence.

"I have often thanked my lucky stars that the way in which the justice system and family law is actually put in place in this country that that was not in place when we went through our experience."
