National Supermarkets was the second largest grocery chain in both the St. Louis, Missouri and New Orleans, Louisiana areas of the United States. Both firms were owned by Loblaw Companies of Canada, but in June 1995, they were sold by Loblaw to Schnucks Markets. Immediately after that, per the FTC, Schnucks sold the National New Orleans division to Schwegmann Giant Super Markets of Metairie, Louisiana, which later sold them to Great A&P, which finally sold them to Rouse Markets in 2007. National itself had cemented the number two spot in St. Louis by acquiring several former Kroger locations and the Kroger distribution center in the market when the latter exited St. Louis in 1986. Kroger and National had been battling for the number two and three spots since the 1970s, swapping rankings several times over throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
New Orleans and St. Louis represented the last two divisions of National Supermarkets, aka National Tea, which originated in Chicago in 1899, making the chain one of the oldest in the USA. It was also one of the largest, ranking as the fifth largest in the late 1960s, only A&P, Safeway, Kroger, and Food Fair were larger. Loblaw bought the company in 1955. Among the chains National acquired were Miller's (Mobile, Alabama), Standard (Indianapolis), and Applebaum's (Minneapolis). Besides the National and Standard banners, Big D and Del Farm banners were used in the Midwest and That Stanley! was used in the South.
St. Louis (/seɪnt ˈluːɪs/ or /sənt ˈluːɪs/) is a city and port in the U.S. state of Missouri. The city developed along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which forms Missouri's border with Illinois. In 2010, St. Louis had a population of 319,294; a 2014 estimate put the population at 317,419, making it the 60th-most populous U.S. city and the second-largest city in the state in terms of city proper population. The St. Louis metropolitan area includes the city as well as nearby areas in Missouri and Illinois; with an estimated population of 2,905,893, it is the largest in Missouri and one of the largest in the United States. St. Louis was founded in 1764 by Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau and named after Louis IX of France. Claimed first by the French, who settled mostly east of the Mississippi River, the region in which the city stands was ceded to Spain following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War. Its territory east of the Mississippi was ceded to the Kingdom of Great Britain, the victor. The area of present-day Missouri was part of Spanish Louisiana from 1762 until 1803.

Troubled retailer Uchumi Supermarkets has returned to the market again hunting for a strategic investor after failing to raise 5 billion shillings from existing shareholders. The National Treasury has agreed to inject 1.8 billion shillings to the retailer, while Jamii Bora declined the offer based on her weak financial position. Uchumi Supermarkets Chief Executive Officer Julius Kipng'etich has also told Channel One that he has struck a deal with Uchumi debtors to convert their debt into equity. Since last year Kenya’s oldest mass retailer Uchumi Supermarket has relied heavily on bank loans and suppliers' goodwill to stay afloat. The financially distressed retailer has also been disposing off some of her assets to pay its debtors who had instituted a wind up case against the supermarket ch...
As Floridians cleared supermarkets of bottled water and emptied gas pumps, people in the northeastern Caribbean were making last minute-preparations before powerful Hurricane Irma hit their islands. Late Tuesday, the massive Category 5 storm was almost upon islands like Antigua and Barbuda with near-record 185 mph sustained winds. In its 11 p.m. ET advisory, the US National Hurricane Center said the eye of the hurricane was 50 miles from the two islands. The center of the storm was moving to the west-northwest at 15 mph. The hurricane center said the extremely dangerous core of Irma would hit the northern Leeward Islands -- which include Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Anguilla -- Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. It's too early to tell whether the storm will make landfal...

http://food-retail.danfoss.com/ During the XVI European Conference about technological innovations in refrigeration and air conditioning held in Milan on June 12th and 13th, 2015, Torben Funder describes the smart grid opportunities for a combined heating and refrigeration cycle applied in food retail applications. The potential of adding the flexibility of supermarkets to a smart grid network is outlined as well as the potential of utilization of unused compressor capacity. In connection with external thermal networks a functional storage opportunity for renewable energy sources like wind is shown viable and backed up by a new case study.
