The Florida Canal or 40 Arpent Canal is a canal in the New Orleans metropolitan area and land down river.
The canal was built in the 18th century colonial era of Louisiana, stretching from what is now the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans, roughly paralleling the Mississippi River on the East Bank down through modern Saint Bernard Parish and part of the East Bank of Plaquemines. Colonial land grants commonly stretched 40 arpents back from the Mississippi River. The canal thus marked the back end of properties, mostly originally plantations. In this area this line happened to generally be about the limit of land useful for cultivation where the higher land of the natural river levee ended in swamp. The "40 Arpent Canal" was used by small vessels for commerce between nearby plantations; larger vessels and longer range shipping used the Mississippi. The earth moved to dig the canal was used to create a raised roadway on the river side of the canal, called the "Florida Walk".
Florida i/ˈflɒrɪdə/ (Spanish for "flowery land") is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. The state is bordered to the west by the Gulf of Mexico, to the north by Alabama and Georgia, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and to the south by the Straits of Florida and the country of Cuba. Florida is the 22nd most extensive, the 3rd most populous, and the 8th most densely populated of the United States. Jacksonville is the most populous city in Florida, and the largest city by area in the contiguous United States. The Miami metropolitan area is the eighth-largest metropolitan area in the United States. Tallahassee is the state capital.
A peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida, it has the longest coastline in the contiguous United States, approximately 1,350 miles (2,170 km), and is the only state that borders both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Much of the state is at or near sea level and is characterized by sedimentary soil. The climate varies from subtropical in the north to tropical in the south. The American alligator, American crocodile, Florida panther, and manatee can be found in the Everglades National Park.
Canals and navigations are human-made channels for water. In the vernacular both are referred to as 'canals'. The main difference between them is that a navigation parallels a river and shares its drainage basin, while a canal cuts across a drainage divide.
A navigation is a series of channels that run roughly parallel to the valley and stream bed of an unimproved river. A navigation always shares the drainage basin of the river. A vessel uses the calm parts of the river itself as well as improvements, traversing the same changes in height.
A true canal is a channel that cuts across a drainage divide, making a navigable channel connecting two different drainage basins.
Most commercially important canals of the first half of the 19th-century were a little of each, using rivers in long stretches, and divide crossing canals in others. This is true for many canals still in use.
Both navigations and canals use engineered structures to improve navigation:
The Cross Florida Barge Canal, now officially the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway is a protected green belt corridor, one mile (1.6 km) wide in most places. It is named for the leader of opposition to the Cross Florida Barge Canal, a canal project to connect the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean across Florida for barge traffic. Two sections were built but the project was cancelled, mainly for environmental reasons.
The Greenway includes the Santos Trail System.
The idea of such a canal was first proposed by Philip II of Spain in 1567. It was repeatedly considered over the years but found to be economically unviable. Secretary of War John C. Calhoun once again proposed a canal in 1818 in order to solve the losses due to shipwrecks and piracy. The Florida Railroad, finished on March 1, 1861, served a similar purpose, connecting the Atlantic Ocean at Fernandina to the Gulf of Mexico at Cedar Key.
In the 1930s, regional politicians lobbied the federal government to fund canal construction as an economic recovery program, including the creation of the Canal Authority of the State of Florida in May 1933. President Franklin D. Roosevelt allocated $5 million in emergency funds in 1935. Local opponents of the canal protested that the canal would deplete Florida's aquifers, and work was stopped a year later.
Barge Canal may refer to one of these projects:

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is considered the Venice of the East with many canals, waterways, and rivers flowing through the city and residential area. Mostly well-to do housing is built along the water and in fact houses can run into the tens of millions of dollars owned by business and entertainment moguls. Many of the house owners have boat slips to dock their boats with easy access to the ocean. The water way is pristine with little pollution.

Occurred on October 26, 2016 / Lake Okeechobee, Florida, USA "Two coworkers and I were conducting a site visit on a FL Everglade's Restoration Project, west of Lake Okeechobee, in October 2016. Our work that day was focused on the Crested Caracara. It was a cool morning, so the thought did cross my mind that it would be a good day to see a panther. While making our way through the project, one of my coworkers spotted a panther so we stopped the vehicle and turned it off. As I was trying to located the panther he saw, we realized we had four panthers in sight. A mother and three large kittens that were approximately 12+ months old. We assume this is the same family that was originally spotted in Jan 2016, when the kittens were just a few months old. One kitten was on the opposite side of ...

Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica Tours - Costa Rica Vacation Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube This is one of the few Costa Rican national parks where walking isn't necessarily the best way to see things. The marked trail along the beach is used mostly for observing turtle nesting, but the best way to see most of the park is from a boat. That doesn't mean you can't get a workout while nature watching; there are plenty of places to rent canoes and kayaks (cayucas or botes). The area protected by Tortuguero (turtle catcher) National Park was an archipelago of volcanic islands until alluvial sediments from the interior mountains, filled in the spaces and formed a network of marshy islands. Sand piled up where the river de...

day 2 in Florida, again blowing 25+ at the shore so I stuck to the canals but instead of fishing the downtown canals I drove west, away from Miami, and fished in the Everglades. It is the Taimiami Trail that runs along route 41 from pretty much the gulf coast to the atlantic coast. Caught a Pleco, numerous Bowfin and some Oscars all while sharing the bank with some locals and some Gators. This footage is mostly from the morning of Feb 20, I spent the afternoon uploading these video off my gopro to make room for the rest of the journey, blew a fuse, fixed fuse, and resumed fishing just before dusk. The fishing wasn't spectacular, did catch some new species and got the bowfin all riled up for about an hour, good times exploring the everglades! If you're ever doing some exploratory fishing ...
There are many underwater harbors, channels and canals on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts that are covered with vestiges and remnants of a sophisticated, and large culture or civilization that existed BEFORE current sea level rose an average of 5' 5". Evidence shows many harbor areas on much of New York's Long Island Sound and other East Coast locations, Florida Gulf Coast, the Louisiana Delta and Mexico, to have been 'worked' and 'inhabited' by a very large, and technically sophisticated population of canal builders during some remote period. Both Florida and New York have extensive offshore harbor and canal-channel systems that are at least -7,000 years old. Could this be archaeological evidence of the massive population of the native Americans living in that area prior to European coloniz...
