Alaa Mubarak (Arabic: علاء مبارك), or Alā'-ud-dīn Muhammad Husni Sayyid Mubarak (Arabic: علاء الدين محمد حسنى سيد مبارك) (born 1962 or 1961) is an Egyptian businessman and the elder of two sons of ousted president Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, who served from 1981–2011, and his wife Suzanne Mubarak.
He keeps a much lower profile than his younger brother, Gamal, and is not involved in politics.
Alaa attended St. George's College, Cairo for his early education; then he graduated from the American University in Cairo. He is married to Heidy Rasekh, and fathered two sons: Muhammad and Omar. Muhammad died on 18 May 2009, aged 12, after suffering a 'severe health crisis.' (a brain haemorrhage)
Just before his father's resignation Alaa had a bitter argument with his brother Gamal Mubarak. He reportedly told him "Instead of working to help your father be honored at the end of his life, you helped damage his image this way," The two brothers almost came to blows and senior palace officials had to interfere in order to cool down both men.

Alaa Al-Aswany was in Tahrir Square each of the 18 days before Mubarak fell from power. In fact, he was one of the few prominent faces of the leaderless revolution. Rajab is reasonably new to the limelight -- becoming a face for the Bahrain uprising of February 14 2011, after the sit-in at Pearl Roundabout. Since then, he has been a public face for the revolution, waging a social media war on Twitter with PR companies working for the regime. After al-Khawaja was imprisoned, he led protests for his release. He has endured beatings, arrests and legal harrassment for engaging in pro-democracy demonstrations. On Saturday 5th of May, he was arrested at Manama airport , and charged the next day with encouraging and engaging in "illegal protests." Nabeel Rajab remains in detention at the time of broadcast.

Alaa Mubarak, or Alā'-ud-dīn Muhammad Husni Sayyid Mubarak, is an Egyptian businessman and the elder of two sons of ousted president
Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, who served from 1981-2011, and his wife Suzanne Mubarak.
He keeps a much lower profile than his younger brother, Gamal, and is not involved in politics.
Alaa attended St. George's College, Cairo for his early education; then he graduated from the American University
in Cairo. He is married to Heidy Rasekh, and fathered two sons: Muhammad and Omar. Muhammad died on 18 May 2009, aged 12,

Just before his father's resignation Alaa had a bitter argument with his brother Gamal Mubarak. He reportedly told him "Instead
of working to help your father be honored at the end of his life, you helped damage his image this way," The two brothers almost
came to blows and senior palace officials had to interfere in order to cool down both men.
On 13 April 2011, Alaa was imprisoned for 15 days pending investigations for corruption, abuse of power, and for his alleged role
in causing the fatalities and casualities of peaceful protesters during the Revolution.

The Egyptian public prosecutor has issued an order to summon Hosni Mubarak, the former president of Egypt, and his two sons, Alaa and Gamal, for questioning over allegations of corruption. Just hours earlier Mubarak had made his first public statement since his dramatic departure from office. He denied being involved in corruption and denied having financial assets in foreign countries. For his part the public prosecutor said Mubarak's speech will not have any impact on the legal measures against him and his family. All this follows a crackdown on protestors in Tahrir Square on Friday and Saturday, in which two people were killed and 70 injured. So, would a trial appease those worried about a counter revolution in Egypt? Or might it further strain relations between the army and the people?

Fattah was ordered jailed by a military court on October 30 and summoned to face charges that included inciting violence — a charge he firmly denies. He refused to cooperate, rejecting the legitimacy of the military court who wanted to try him as a civilian. Democracy Now! speaks to Fattah about the Egyptian revolution's ongoing struggle against the military regime and his ordeal in one of Egypt's worst prisons, which prevented him from attending the birth of his first son. Fattah's trial comes just as Egypt's ousted leader, Hosni Mubarak, returns to a Cairo courtroom today to face charges over the deaths of 840 protesters during the uprising against his rule. "What comes next might be even tougher and even more difficult," Fattah says, "but I don't think that this revolution is going to end without really completely renegotiating the order of power in Egypt and across the Arab world."

New york-based committee to protect journalists says Eritrea, Ethiopia and Egypt have the highest number of imprisoned journalists on the African continent. The three countries are also on the worldwide top-ten list of worst journalist jailers.
The committee to protect journalists indicates 34 African journalists are in jails in northeast Africa.
In Ethiopia, 7 of the 34 journalists are in jail. But the government insists these reporters are imprisoned for violations of anti-terrorism laws, not because of their reporting. And in Eritrea, 22 journalists are in prison; none of them were charged or brought before a court.
Egypt has cracked down on journalists since president Mohamed Morsi was ousted in July by the military. Over 20 journalists have been charged with fabricating news story and "aiding terror" in Egypt.
The hash tag #FreeAJStaff was trending on twitter on Wednesday following the launch of an online campaign calling for the Egyptian authorities to release Al-jazeera English journalists Mohamed Fadel Fahmy, Baher Mohamed and peter Greste.
The three were referred to criminal court on January 29 and face charges of harming national security, airing false news and working without permits, and "aiding" a terrorist group, identified by authorities as the now-outlawed Muslim brotherhood.
Local media confirmed that the three detained journalists had been transferred to Tora prisons usually reserved for high-profile detainees. Past inmates include former president Hosni Mubarak and his two sons, Gamal and Alaa.
The news of the move follows the launch of the #FreeAJStaff online campaign. The campaign has seen journalists and online activists across the world posting photos of them with their mouths taped shut holding signs calling for the release of Fahmy, Mohamed and Greste.
