Trent Hodkinson escorts terminally ill girl to formal

Hannah Rye, who has terminal cancer, is escorted to her Kurri Kurri High School formal by Newcastle Knights player.

The 15-year-old, who was suffering terminal cancer, died over the weekend.

Only a month ago she attended her Year 10 formal at Kurri Kurri High School in the Hunter Valley with Newcastle Knights player Hodkinson as her date.

Hannah met the player at John Hunter Children's Hospital last year when she was being treated for Ewing's sarcoma.

Her school brought the date of the formal forward so Hannah could attend, with principal Tracey Breese thanking the school community for organising the event.

"They certainly helped make the formal such a special event," Ms Breese told the Newcastle Herald.

Ms Breese said Hannah looked beautiful at the formal and told her teachers: "I just don't want it to end."

Hodkinson said at the time: "She was the star of the show and all her friends were cheering and so happy that she was able to go to the event. She certainly brought a smile to my face."

Hannah's extended family held an early Christmas for her, including a tree, presents and a turkey.

Hannah was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma when she was just 13-years-old.

She underwent chemotherapy and was cleared of active cancer for only five months before the disease returned.

Ewing's sarcoma is a rare cancer which affects the bones and soft tissue, mostly occurring in children and teenagers.

Tributes flowed for the brave teenager on Tuesday morning, with sports figures expressing their condolences on social media.
