A man and a woman have been found dead at a house in Melbourne's east.

Police have confirmed a gun was used in the incident and that the people were known to each other.

Their relationship is yet to be established by detectives but it's believed the pair were both born in the 1950s.

Police were called to the house on Princess Street, Kew, on Monday afternoon.

The exact circumstances surrounding the deaths are yet to be determined but police say they are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

The house is being heavily guarded by uniformed police as it is on a major arterial road which cannot be taped off.

A large number of detectives were seen entering the property about 5.30pm.

A woman with two young children was seen being escorted by detectives to the property.

One woman standing near the police line appeared distressed and when asked if she knew the people who lived at the home, tearfully replied "no comment".

More friends of the pair arrived at the property about 6.30pm.

One woman was heard telling detectives "I tried to help him". A man and woman said they knew the couple but "weren't allowed to comment".

Cars including a Lotus and a late-model BMW convertible are parked in the driveway of the home.
