Where the Sidewalk Ends is a 1950 American film noir directed and produced by Otto Preminger. The film narrative concerns ruthless and cynical Mark Dixon (Dana Andrews), a metropolitan police detective, who despises all criminals because his father had been one. In June 1941 Ukrainian villagers are living in peace. As the school year ends, a group of friends decide to travel to Kiev for a holiday. To their horror, they find themselves attacked by German aircraft, part of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. Eventually their village itself is occupied by the Nazis. Meanwhile, men and women take to the hills to form partisan militias and battle the invaders.
The film cast includes four Oscar winners: Anne Baxter, Walter Huston, Dean Jagger and Walter Brennan; and two Oscar nominees: Erich von Stroheim and Ann Harding.
Per IMDB: "This is one of the films deemed 'subversive' by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) in October 1947, at the height of the 'Red Scare' era typified by the tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy. The committee decided that, even though Russia was our ally against Nazi Germany in World War II--when this film was made--the movie's sympathetic portrayal of Russian peasants and guerrillas who were fighting off Nazi forces was an 'endorsement' of Communism. Senator McCarthy wasn't elected until 1948."
In the severely re-edited, re-titled re-release, ARMORED ATTACK (1957) -- released in the wake of the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 -- all references to the Russian nationality of the participants in the original story was either eliminated or obscured.

Dana Andrews
Dana Andrews (January 1, 1909 – December 17, 1992) was an American film actor. He was one of Hollywood's major stars of the 1940s, and continued acting, though generally in less prestigious roles, into the 1980s. One of his best-known roles, and the one for which he received the most praise, was as war veteran Fred Derry in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946).
Early life
He was born Carver Dana Andrews on a farmstead outside Collins, Covington County, Mississippi, the third of thirteen children of Charles Forrest Andrews, a Baptist minister, and his wife Annis (née Speed). The family subsequently moved to Huntsville, Texas, where his younger siblings (including actor Steve Forrest) were born.
He attended college at Sam Houston State University and also studied business administration in Houston, Texas. In 1931, he traveled to Los Angeles, California, seeking opportunities as a singer. He worked at various jobs, including pumping gas in Van Nuys. To help Andrews study music at night, "The station owners stepped in ... with a deal: $50 a week for full-time study, in exchange for a five-year share of possible later earnings."

In June 1941 Ukrainian villagers are living in peace. As the school year ends, a group of friends decide to travel to Kiev for a holiday. To their horror, they find themselves attacked by German aircraft, part of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. Eventually their village itself is occupied by the Nazis. Meanwhile, men and women take to the hills to form partisan militias and battle the invaders.
The film cast includes four Oscar winners: Anne Baxter, Walter Huston, Dean Jagger and Walter Brennan; and two Oscar nominees: Erich von Stroheim and Ann Harding.
Per IMDB: "This is one of the films deemed 'subversive' by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) in October 1947, at the height of the 'Red Scare' era typified by the tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy. The committee decided that, even though Russia was our ally against Nazi Germany in World War II--when this film was made--the movie's sympathetic portrayal of Russian peasants and guerrillas who were fighting off Nazi forces was an 'endorsement' of Communism. Senator McCarthy wasn't elected until 1948."
In the severely re-edited, re-titled re-release, ARMORED ATTACK (1957) -- released in the wake of the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 -- all references to the Russian nationality of the participants in the original story was either eliminated or obscured.

In June 1941 Ukrainian villagers are living in peace. As the school year ends, a group of friends decide to travel to Kiev for a holiday. To their horror, they find themselves attacked by German aircraft, part of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. Eventually their village itself is occupied by the Nazis. Meanwhile, men and women take to the hills to form partisan militias and battle the invaders.
The film cast includes four Oscar winners: Anne Baxter, Walter Huston, Dean Jagger and Walter Brennan; and two Oscar nominees: Erich von Stroheim and Ann Harding.
Per IMDB: "This is one of the films deemed 'subversive' by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) in October 1947, at the height of the 'Red Scare' era typified by the tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy. The committee decided that, even though Russia was our ally against Nazi Germany in World War II--when this film was made--the movie's sympathetic portrayal of Russian peasants and guerrillas who were fighting off Nazi forces was an 'endorsement' of Communism. Senator McCarthy wasn't elected until 1948."
In the severely re-edited, re-titled re-release, ARMORED ATTACK (1957) -- released in the wake of the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 -- all references to the Russian nationality of the participants in the original story was either eliminated or obscured.

In June 1941 Ukrainian villagers are living in peace. As the school year ends, a group of friends decide to travel to Kiev for a holiday. To their horror, they find themselves attacked by German aircraft, part of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. Eventually their village itself is occupied by the Nazis. Meanwhile, men and women take to the hills to form partisan militias and battle the invaders.
The film cast includes four Oscar winners: Anne Baxter, Walter Huston, Dean Jagger and Walter Brennan; and two Oscar nominees: Erich von Stroheim and Ann Harding.
Per IMDB: "This is one of the films deemed 'subversive' by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) in October 1947, at the height of the 'Red Scare' era typified by the tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy. The committee decided that, even though Russia was our ally against Nazi Germany in World War II--when this film was made--the movie's sympathetic portrayal of Russian peasants and guerrillas who were fighting off Nazi forces was an 'endorsement' of Communism. Senator McCarthy wasn't elected until 1948."
In the severely re-edited, re-titled re-release, ARMORED ATTACK (1957) -- released in the wake of the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 -- all references to the Russian nationality of the participants in the original story was either eliminated or obscured.

In June 1941 Ukrainian villagers are living in peace. As the school year ends, a group of friends decide to travel to Kiev for a holiday. To their horror, they find themselves attacked by German aircraft, part of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. Eventually their village itself is occupied by the Nazis. Meanwhile, men and women take to the hills to form partisan militias and battle the invaders.
The film cast includes four Oscar winners: Anne Baxter, Walter Huston, Dean Jagger and Walter Brennan; and two Oscar nominees: Erich von Stroheim and Ann Harding.
Per IMDB: "This is one of the films deemed 'subversive' by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) in October 1947, at the height of the 'Red Scare' era typified by the tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy. The committee decided that, even though Russia was our ally against Nazi Germany in World War II--when this film was made--the movie's sympathetic portrayal of Russian peasants and guerrillas who were fighting off Nazi forces was an 'endorsement' of Communism. Senator McCarthy wasn't elected until 1948."
In the severely re-edited, re-titled re-release, ARMORED ATTACK (1957) -- released in the wake of the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 -- all references to the Russian nationality of the participants in the original story was either eliminated or obscured.
